1.
ACG 4 string dual pickup passive - £785 (plus a few months wait time I suspect) MIA American Special Jazz, black, maple neck, current model - £696.55 via Thomann, free delivery of course, and available now. MIA American Standard Jazz, black, maple neck., current model. £1025.68, giving you the high mass bridge and custom shop pickups and a hard case (if you want to spend the extra on those things). and available now, of course. So really the price of Fenders if you shops wisely is not so excessive.
I don't know if you have played an ACG but the QC is very impressive - why buy a Fender when you can have a quality hand made instrument with your choice of options for (pretty much) the same price? No brainer to me.
2. I think a lot of people are getting confused about the 'sound like me' thing. When I say 'sound like me', I'm not talking about the tone of the bass.
3. Top horn at nipple height for me - I'm a player not a poser.
4. Used D'Addario's when I started out (still buy them - rarely) then moved to Ernie Ball's then moved to DR's for the past couple years. Saying that, I'm a recent convert to TI strings - I have a set of Jazz Rounds on my Sadowsky and they sound awesome. Never have got on with Roto's for some reason...
5. At least attend the practice session - they might be nice guys who are easily influenced. If you don't go you'll never know. If it turns out that they're neither of the above then I would give them a thanks but no thanks. And besides, you should attend/leave a practice in high spirits - if the music doesn't get you excited then what's the point of playing!
6. BDI-21 is actually a bit better to my ears than a BDDI so I would give that the thumbs up. Or if you can stretch your budget a bit, a DHA VT1. Just got hold of the newer 'mini' version and it is very good.
7. I firmly believe that the three main factors in 'your' tone are the way you hit the strings, the pickups on the bass and how fresh/dead the strings are. That's why I always sound like me whatever bass/rig I play.
8. Bill Ward & Geezer Butler for sure - really underrated IMO.
9. And one to be thrown at drummers who constantly speed up.
10. Hi, yes that would be okay - PM me and we'll arrange something!
11. My favourite OD pedal of the past year is the Way Huge Green Rhino - an overdrive that dosen't lose any bass for once.
12. Any word on the DI out? Would be useful so you can alter stage/FOH sound accordingly. Is it worth buying one if you already have a Bass Big Muff? Thanks!
13. I have a Diago power supply and that's great - quiet in operation and can daisy chain huge amounts of pedals.
14. It's just a badge thing. Like those sad cases that get rid of Squier on the headstock and put a Fender decal on. If that Ibby was worth the asking price then I'd buy it.
15.
For about £90 you can get a Carl Martin Classic Optical Compressor. I am seriously in love with mine - has a lovely big sound to it with the gain turned up and great, user friendly flexibility with the attack and compress knobs. I'm a fan of simple compressors for live use and this ticks the box. Had previously used a DBX 163A and a Joe Meek 3Q preamp. The Carl Martin is a happy medium there for me. Well worth the money.
+1. Been using mine non-stop since I bought it earlier this year.
16.
Why does every thread with the trigger words "active" and/or "passive" turn into an "active vs. passive" debate regardless of the question posed by the OP?
Because active is clearly better than passive!
17.
No idea who he is.
John Entwistle played bass for a band called The Who. Tomorrow, we'll do colours.
18.
another example punk rock gig in a small club. we're builing up the backline, doing some line checks. everythings easy. a guy shows up: "May I play your guitar?" "huh?" "May I play your guitar for the first few songs?" "You're kiddin'" guy: stares at me me: "No." guy: hates me me: "No." guy: leaves
Bloody hell! Did the guy have a crack pipe behind his ear as well? Unfortunately, I've had something similar happen to me before too...
19. A few decent albums released in my birth year: Mother's Milk - RHCP Louder Than Love - Soundgarden 13 Songs - Fugazi Stone Roses - Stone Roses
