2.
To be fair, I didn't get that either. I Googled it and it seems to be quite an IT specific phrase. It means 'practice what you preach' right?
Yes, that's it. Apocryphal perhaps, but supposedly originated from the needs of pet food manufacturers to prove the quality of their product.
 3.
Ah the famous Bass Chat politeness. Never gets old.
I can only assume you don't get the turn of phrase. Thanks for the chat - it's been enlightening.
 4.
That's what I mean by being consequent. Don't expect any kind of respect if you're unable to give some.
Splendid, then we agree. Time to eat your own dog food.
 5.
Didn't see much reasoning there, mostly just another dose of " Basschat politeness"
No reasoning there at all. Merely an observation and a suggestion. However, do please continue. I find your posts most entertaining. Sorry about that.
 6.
Live and let live but be consequent.
That, my friend, is marvellous. You should consider adding that to your other self-penned words of wisdom in your sig. It would help slower-witted types (like me, clearly) to easily identify the extent of your conceit/self-deification and perhaps think twice before mounting yet another failed attempt to appeal to reason.
 7. Where do you live, mate? I have a JC so you could try my case for size if you're close.
 8. I was always amazed by the sound of fretless bass, so for me it was Mick Karn and John Giblin before him. Danny Thompson on the double bass. Such a shame I rarely get to play either with my band :-)
 9.
How would you feel if we: 1 - carried on using the regular marketplace forums 2 - charged a yearly subscription fee to be able to post adverts there (~£20) to help pay for developments 3 - installed a new 'bump' button which only works once every 36hrs on your thread 4 - develop the marketplace to allow thumbnails next to threads for everyone 5 - develop a better form for selling items with fields for things like location, price, etc to make adverts clearer
Hi Ped, Seems entirely reasonable to me - happy to pay a sub, as I feel it's the decent thing to do to donate when I make a sale through here. I prefer the old forums but acknowledge the limitations
 10.
I use it all the time for both my bands...
Thanks for the replies, folks!
 11. Fellow Basschatters, Does anyone use the OnSong app for the iPad? Care to share your views/thoughts on its suitability noth as a rehearsal tool and a live performance tool? http://www.onsongapp.com/ Thanks in advance!
 12. Learned to play classical guitar as a kid before moving to bass, which I always had an interest in. I guess it made fingerstyle a natural choice for me (still struggle with a pick...)
 13.
Am I the only person that doesn't even consider it around here, or are there more like me??
Scale length is not something I consider. I'd add neck profile, fingerboard radius, fret gauge and a host of other features to that list I must admit I'm slightly bemused when I hear comments like 'I just can't get on with a scale length of x', or I can't work with a radiussed/flat fingerboard' or even 'I can't switch from 4 to 5 strings'. I can see there may be a brief period when folks first pick up a 'new' bass that some aspects of it's build might feel unfamiliar, but I struggle to see how that can make a lasting difference. If it still feels unfamiliar, spend more time with it. I've come to the conclusion that either I'm lucky that I find it easy to adapt to different basses or I'm just not that picky.
 14.
That is quite foul.
I spat my drink out. Twice. Once when I read your retort and again when I saw the bass. Much obliged
 15.
If this doesn't put a smile on your face and/or a spring in your step, I'd be VERY worried!! LOL To put the icing on the cake, the band is run by the bassist.
That's phenomenal stuff They all look like they're having a great time. Sublime bass playing and that piano solo about a minute from the end is high-point for me.
 16.
It's been re-released on DVD: http://www.dannythompson.bigcartel.com/product/bassically-speaking
Thanks for the link. One on its way to me now, too.
 17.
Admittedly, they were, and still are great songs, but do WE still want to keep playing them, and perhaps more importantly, do the PUNTERS still want to keep hearing them?
Apologies for the hijack/rant, but... It constantly surprises me how dissmissive some of the posts are about cover bands, the numbers they might play and the enthusiasm (or otherwise) with which we deign to grace them with our (collectively no doubt prodigous) talent. I personally think that a covers band needs to play a set which satisfies the various needs/tastes/whims in the following in order: 1 - Pub Landlord/lady (assuming he/she knows their punters) 2 - Punters 3 - Band Our last opening set was this: Morning Glory - Oasis Molly's Lips - Nirvana/Vaselines Vertigo - U2 Alive - Pearl Jam Use Somebody - Kings of Leon Feel Like Making Love - Bad Company Alright Now - Free Where the Streets have no Name - U2 Hammer to Fall - Queen About a Girl - Nirvana Knocking on Heaven's Door - G 'n' R Corny? Tired? Cliched? Sh*t? Probably all of the above to some, but the fact is we're booked up until this time next year playing stuff like this in pubs, so I guess there's an appetite for it. Back on topic, we regularly play 'Alright Now' and 'Sex On Fire' from the 10 thebrig listed. Inevitably there are times when I'd rather be playing something else or at least there's an element of 'going through the motions' but I've never seen them clear a pub. I'm happy to play them because I'm out gigging.
 18.
Oh I do miss John Martyn - we shall ne'er see his like again.
This. I feel I would be a lesser person for not having having heard his work. Would've loved to have seen him live.
 19.
... It can be done right O.o
Yup, Sandberg seem to be able to do it right. Loving that.
 20.
+1 on the 15's
Yup, 15s work for me - not in an overly loud band, but for a 6 piece rock covers band playing pubs they are great.
 21.
There's also a new product from Proguard which is specifically for musicians and eliminates the oclusion effect most earplugs give you. As someone who stands right next to a bass amp (as most of us on here do) I find a lot of earplugs block out all the nasty frequencies but not the bass, ending up with a really bass heavy mix. Not good if you're trying to listen for a guitar cue and all you can hear is boom boom. I've just ordered a set of these and will report back after my gig on saturday. The Noizezz ones I mentioned are by the same company so will make an interesting comparison. These are 20dB reduction (average) so should be ideally between the ER15 and ER25s nottswarwick...
Wow, these look like a really great 'back-up' set for custom-fits and sensible money too.
 22.
I wasn't aware that there was a contest offered
+1 If there was a contest, these would win Not cheap but 'what price your hearing?' etc. I already have tinnitus in my right ear due to not looking after my hearing so it was a no-brainer for me. To be fair, I haven't tried any others for such a long time that I can't reasonably give more than a personal opinion, but after the initial (rather wierd) settling in period they're great. Volume reduction seems, to my ears, to be flat across the spectrum so it does feel like the rest of the band have been 'turned down' a smidge without losing any detail. Pros: Comfort, flat response, invisible to others once their in (if that matters to you), no ringing ears regardless of how loud we play Cons: Pricey to replace (quite how I've managed not to lose one is beyond me!)
 23.
They are different. They produce different side effects, give you different results, neither is better all the time, either has different merits.
I'll try and resist the temptation to tweak. I already get enough 'no information' looks, mostly from guitarists, when folks first encounter the TC compressor (never mind the rest of the pedal-board, with some fx in line and some via a Wounded Paw Blender)
I like it in line personally - oo-errrrr!
Yup, I positively love it in line, with the ability to alternate between soft and hard (knee) at my whim
 24.
Well what you have described there in fact is parallel compression, whereby the signal is split, one side is compressed and then the signals are mixed together again. <snip> Its a very very valid technique, which does need a bit more control than a straight 50/50 split to get the best effect from, which can be done still with judicious use of the makeup gain on the compression side on the MB amps.
Thanks for the explanation - I can certainly see the value of its application in a studio context and the more I thought about it, I realised that's the way I've been recorded in the past! I wonder how much noticeable improvement you would get with parallel compression in a live bass playing situation vs. sticking it in line.
