1. I recently bought a Darkglass Element from Will. The unfortunate part was that on it's arrival, I couldn't power it up no matter what I tried. The fortunate part is that Will was an absolute gent throughout the whole sale. On this occasion we couldn't resolve the power-up issue but I was able to return the pedal to Will and he refunded me no problem at all. I think it's often more useful to know how people interact when there is a problem and in this regard I can say that Will is one of the good guys. Buy with confidence and be assured that if there is any issue he'll be responsive and helpful. Cheers! Benthos.
2. That's very interesting and quite unexpected/counterintuitive. I'll have to give that a go.
3. Fantastic stuff. Always good to hear Victor speak. Thanks, @Baloney Balderdash
4. If it sounds good and feels good, it is good! 🙂
5. Apologies in advance if this is controversial but out of curiosity, for those who've owned and sold multiple variations of the same 'type' of bass, was that driven by aesthetics or some other reason to find 'the one'? I consider myself a bit too cloth-eared to be able to sonically distinguish (for example) one Jazz from the next, but I concede that many others probably can. That said, I'm not awfully sure the audience can(!) I fully appreciate that build quality is important and is an entirely justifiable reason in itself to go through a few of the same type of bass. Likewise, why gig your birth year all-original Jazz when you can gig something sonically close and a helluva lot cheaper/less heartbreaking to have dinged or nicked? My only experience of this is owning a Jap Fender P which felt and sounded uninspiring (to me) and now owning a much less expensive P which feels and sounds great.
6. Agreed. I measured the gap and I have a little over 5mm between fretted string and pup housing. No adjustments made to pole pieces. I consider myself to be firmly in the 'clueless' bracket - I am not in any way an expert at setting up pickups and it may be the case that someone on here with superior knowledge and skill can explain why that is not optimal or desirable, but the output is even across the strings, has plenty of bass and sounds good, to my ears at least. There still appears to be plenty of casing to rest my right thumb on as and when required and for me at least it took only moments to get used to.
7. Thia is what I found. They seem to sit somewhere between 'worryingly' low and 'these are installed wrongly' low but sound great.
8. When I installed them they did seem to sit a bit lower than the stock pups (i replace the foam) but still produced a ton of bottom end. I havent had to tweak the pole positions either. One happy customer here!
9. I recently put these into my G&L tribute and I really like them. An improvement (IMHO) in sound, but horses for courses I guess.
10. Only moderately ridculous GAS for me, it would seem. Not sure if I should be proud or ashamed 🙂 Blue Aria Pro II 80s pointy headstock thing - still lying in a mate's studio, I think. Did all my bedroom noodling and early forays with bands on it. Black no-name budget fretless P copy (hateful, firewood) Blue Ibanez BTB 6 string - sold on here, sometimes wish I'd kept it. Blue Warwick Corvette - sold, but loved it's growl. Sunburst MIM 60s RI Jazz, only original part left is the body. DiMarzios, stack knobs, Gotoh bridge, proper neck. My bitsa and it's perfect. 2002 Blue Pearl Maple neck/board SR5H. This and the jazz did almost all my gigs. Lightwave VL5 fretless. All the mwahs. Very few gigs. (Mick Karn fan). Sunburst MIJ P. Very pretty, never got on with it. Traded on here for... ... Aria SWB EUB. Gold Jack Casady. Bought here, gigged a couple of times and then kept at home. Emerald Blue G&L Tribute LB-100 with the pups swapped out for Dimarzios. Fantastic (IMHO) for the price. It feels to me like I've at least tried most of the iconic styles of bass, but I'd love a crack at a TRB6 or a Warwick 6er just to convince myself I don't need them 😁
11. I use an iGig dual bag (bought, if I recall from Bass Direct a long time ago.) It does a fine job without being too bulky and has plenty of space for extra bits and bobs. Unfortunately, they don't seem to be around any more from a brief web search, but I see Bass Direct sell something similar - Gator Progo Bass x2. Not cheap, though and I don't have any experience on whether they're any good.
12. I've only ever tried the EB Wonder Wipes - seemed to do a decent enough job but as fretmeister has already alluded to, the dirt on my SR5 maple 'board seems pretty ingrained, so I've come to regard it as part of it's character 😁
13. Thank you all for the encouragment and suggestions - it really is appreciated! Plenty of food for thought, there.
14. Hello All, Apologies if this post is a bit long and rambling, but I'd appreciate the thoughts of you good people here at Basschat. I'm an older (53) player who doesn't play in a band any more. I was pretty active about 5 years ago and played in a couple of bands (nothing special, just covers bands but we had a laugh and it paid for itself.) Over the years GAS helped me acquire what now seems to be an excessive amount of gear and it's gathering dust. A change in career and location means I'm now living in rural Scotland working unsociable hours so I don't have the time to commit to anything more than the odd jam, which happens very occasionally. I have only recently picked up the bass again and that's confined to a bit of unstructured noodling on my Jazz, which I know I'm never parting with. So the two questions I have are: 1 - What on earth should I do to drive a bit more structure into what I'm doing? Does anyone have experience with online courses that they can share? I know it's difficult to make a recommendation when my learning goals aren't clear, but I guess I'd like to expand my music theory (which is relatively weak) and my facility/articulation (which definately needs work!) 2 - What should I do with all this gear? I have a bass for what seems like every occasion and gear to go with it, but I'm convinced the majority of it will continue to gather dust. I used to gig with my Jazz and a Stingray 5 but over the years acquired a Lightwave 5 fretless, a cheap 5er electro-acoustic, a Jack Casady and even an Aria upright (which I still kinda like even as furniture!) I have a flightcased pedalboard (Radial BigShot, tc Electronic Nova Dynamics, Wounded Paw Blender, Catalinbread SFT, EHX Big Muff, EHX BassBalls, MXR Bass Octave, CEB3 Chorus, SansAmp Bass Driver) and an Aguilar/Genz Benz backline. I know, the obvious answers are "sell it!/give it to me!" 🙂 but I wondered if anyone had experience of any musical charities for kids that could benefit. At the moment I'm thinking I'll keep the Jazz and the upright along with a practice amp and focus on the fundamentals for their own sake.
15.
Brad - Shame
Absolutely brilliant album :-)
16.
Too true - I did it with a band and the guitarist stopped and asked why I wasn't playing!
A well attuned musical ear your guitarist has there.
17. Just started listening to these guys via another thread on here. Great stuff. Thanks for the link
18. Camille. I think I'm in love :-) http://youtu.be/-ow6SWpx7k4
19.
An instrument with a quality of construction, fretwork etc that'll allow a low action has got to be good. Whether a player likes a low (whatever that is...) action is another matter.
This. Much easier to raise the action to your taste on a great bass than lower it on a nasty one.
20.
It's like finding a corpse in your f***ing greenhouse isn't it.
A genuine LOL moment - I take my hat off to you, sir
21.
Hello all. I have a Boss Gt6b which I use on all my gigs. <snip> I'm dreaming of a small 4to 6 pedal board with a psu, tuner, sans amp/Tech21,overdrive,Octaver. Would it be a waste of time?
I did exactly this and I prefer the pedal board set-up, probably because: - I'm too lazy to explore the near-infinite configuration of the GT6-B - I have exactly what I (think I) need on the board, but see Warning below - I spent a lot of time and effort selecting the pedals and I'm really happy with my sound I may very well be in a complete state of denial! Warning: Simple pedal board setups are a gateway to more complex/expensive ones if you're as weak-willed as I am. I now run Radial Bigshot I/O into a Nova Dynamics compressor then SFT, Big Muff, BassBalls (these three via a Wounded Paw Blender) then BassOctave Deluxe, CEB-3 Chorus, SansAmp YMMV, etc.
