They remind me of those Aliexpress Strandberg copies - Changbergs if you like ( Going along with the tradition of Chibson, Chickenbacker, etc )

I don't play 5 string very often but I have a BB1025X for the times that I need one. Mine had been rewired as VVT before I bought it which I have found much more usable than my old BB1025 that I had a few years back. If you want lightweight tuners that aren't clover leaf then a set of Hipshot Ultralites with either Y or lollipop top tuny things will fit straight in. You'll need to drill a hole for each tuner but if/when you return it to stock in the future then the extra hole won't be visible.

Nostalgia isn't as good as it used to be

I'm sure that if I returned in half an hour, every bass ever made with a scratchplate will have been listed here 😀

As I get older I find the angle that I like to hold my bass gets higher and higher but there's only so much a set of lightweight tuners can so I am seriously thinking about something headless. A Status is probably out of my budget so maybe a Cort Space 5 or an Ibanez with regularly angled frets ( if such a thing exists )

I used GK amps for years, initially due to being a huge Chilis fan, but they do sound remarkable and since going in-ears I use a DiCosimo GK type preamp pedal Much as I enjoyed the 1001RB II, I preferred the 700 as the 1001 was so powerful that I couldn't get that full tilt "on the rails" tone without it being ridiculously loud. 700RB II with 2x Ashdown MAG410s, not ABMs, was the best sound I ever had

Squier 6 String Jazz, so who’s tempted at this price?
Delberthot replied to jimbobothy's topic in Bass Guitars
I pretty much only play 4 string basses these days. it's been at least 15 years since I played a 6 string. It doesn't stop me wanting to buy one of these though 🤔 -

Nice. I have it's twin in the same colour except it's been rewired vvt. It's one of the few 5 strngs that feel really comfortable to me

once you've played a 5 string what's the point of 4?
Delberthot replied to DDR's topic in General Discussion
I've always played whatever was needed in the particular band I was in at the time from 4 to 6 string. I also played what wasn't necessary like a 6 string Yamaha TRB fretless or 8 and 12 string basses just for the hell of it Nowadays I prefer a 4 string as maybe only 2 or 3 songs in the set would benefit from having a 5 string. I don't see the point in giving me extra work negotiating a 5 string when a 4 string is more comfortable. The solution is either a Hipshot extender or boss oc5 for anything lower than E. Having said that I do have a Yamaha BB1025 just in case of emergencies -
I like shiny things so whatever today's favourite shiny bass is , that is what I am going to use. I don't really think about it. I have both passive and active basses and generally only use one bass at a gig. It's purely down to which one I fancy taking with me on the night and I'll adjust my preamp pedal to suit whichever bass I pick

I always loved the sound of Stingrays on recordings but I could only get that sound from a Sterling. I have a black Sterling 4HH with matching headstock and it's one bass I'll never part with.

And all the while there's a Fender exec laughing their ass off because there's a UK bass forum with 52000 members having an 8 page thread discussing their basses. Likely the same scenario over at Talkbs. I call reverse physchology! Fender are clevererer than this - the whole innovation thing is surely tongue in cheek as they know they are just making some tweaks to a 60+ year old design because that's what they make their money on. And all the while we're also talking about other models, not just the ones they are currently churning out. It's money in the bank I tells ya.

I had a couple of 12ers many years ago and sometimes played entire rock gigs with one. I always play fingers style so it's definitely possible . I don't even gig anymore but it doesn't stop me wanting one 🤔

The minefield that is EB MM Sterlings (not stingray!)
Delberthot replied to Minininjarob's topic in Bass Guitars
I was always a big fan of the ceramic pickup SR5 so when I made the change back to 4 string then the Sterling was the one to go for. On paper, the specs are pretty much identical but they don't sound the same at all. Still very much in your face but not quite as grindy as the SR5s. As above, they should be lighter than an SR4, having a smaller body and narrower neck but in my experience they feel heavier. I was on the lookout for another one a few years back and managed to pick up a used Sterling 4HH in black with matching headstock which I haven't seen that often before. In truth, I was waiting for the 30th anniversary model to come out last year but instead they seem to have discontinued them which seems odd as I am sure that there would have been enough of a fan base to make it financially viable to have made one, even if it was the last production run of them. -
Not sure if a video exists but Doug played on Mick Jagger's track "Sweet Thing" Now there's a low register groove

Whenever I hear Layla I always imagine that right before they begun recording, EC shot himself full of heroin. It's great at the beginning but as the song progresses he gets more and more out of his mind until you get that casualty of a guitar solo at the end.
-
Weight has never been an issue but neck dive most certainly is. nothing worse than not being able to play properly due to having to support the neck with your left hand. Regardless of what has been said before - all of the non-slip straps in the world combined won't stop a neck heavy bass being neck heavy. I'd rather have a heavy bass that balanced well than a light bass with a neck that wants to head for the floor whenever you take your hands off it
-
That pretty much sums it up for me. Took 6 months out this year before looking for a new band. They were ok and decent guys but I just could not be bothered playing any more. I'm planning to keep a hold of everything and sell things for the occasional rainy day purchase

Do you struggle to get certain sounds?
Delberthot replied to Stub Mandrel's topic in General Discussion
I chased certain sounds for years - one prime example was that I bought 2 basses around the same time - A Modulus Flea and a Warwick Thumb NT5. The Flea bass sounded terrible and nothing like Flea. I picked up the Thumb and it sounded like Flea! Rickenbackers always sounded dull and bland and nothing like Chris Squire or Geddy Lee. Precisions in my hands were clickety clackety and nothing like John Deacon. I gave up trying to achieve particular sounds and just concentrate on being me and I am much happier for it. -
The EMG 35, 40 etc are available as jazz or reverse p as well.

The think I often find is that some people put long posts in there but you can only see so much of it. I can't find anywhere in their profiles to view the whole thing
-
My first gig was with a big band and most of the horn players would have a solo at some point in the night but I'm sure it probably goes back further to classical music and perhaps the odd harpsichord solo back in the day 🤔

It looks like it's been painted with Hammerite and the only references I can find to MLX are a Martin Audio sub and Digital car dials made by Dakota. I thought all Jaydees had proper names like Calibas, Celeste etc rather than acronyms The headstock looks like an old Aria something
