Most machinehead dimensions can be found online so if you can take one of your off and measure the thickness of the shaft (ooer missus) etc then have a look at some of the stuff available. there are surprisingly few different sized machineheads in the world. the actual bit you turn may vary but there are only a few different shaft sizes so it should be relatively easy to find something. Off the top of my head, the main ones are the Gotoh GB7 mini tuners which are sealed and attach with one screw at the back a la Warwick and 2 different Fender sized ones - the larger being on most CIJ & MIA Fenders and the others generally on MIM and cheaper CIJ instruments.

I wouldn't worry about them not being bass specific - I've been using guitar combos for practicing at home since I began playing bass in 1987.

Its something like £480 to have side and front dots fitted. This includes routing the cable back to the body and putting in a cavity for the battery, switch, etc. If you just send off your neck and do the rest yourself then you get 40% off the total cost. I've often though about it myself but Its definitely a case of picking the bass that is a definite 100% keeper to get it done to. I've gone through far too many basses in the last few years to have even considered getting it done.

I got a rather nice surprise at practice last night. I used to take my own gear but have gotten lazy in my old age so I just take my bass, a strap and a cable. Fair enough I was using my Warwick so it does have a good sound to begin with but I played through an Ashdown Mag 300 15" combo attached to a Peavey 4x10" and it sounded rather good. Not sure which cab I was hearing the most from though. I was sitting down on a very comfy couch with the rig right next to me. Its a times like these that I would like to have a rig capable of reproducing the low end better. I love my Schroeder, its loud and punchy as hell, but I wouldn't mind something now and again that has a bit more bollocks about it.

I'm thinking about doing this with my blue 5 string $$. It has a few scratches. Plenty of times in the past I've got a touch up pen from Halfords and then t-cut it but with a stain its different

Not light but I was using Elites Nathan East sig strings on mine. they have a tapered B string a far as I remember. I normally use Super slinkies on other basses

Your GK head is plenty loud for any gig situation you may find yourself in provided you have a cab or combination of cabs that are efficient enough to be able to translate the power of the GK to actual sound. As a smart person mentioned previously, a Schroeder 1212L cab combined with this head will give you all the volume you will ever need unless you plan on doing an Isle of White-esque open air concert with no PA. I know this because until a month ago, that's what i used and it never ever let me down. £450 will get you a second hand 1212L cab. They come up every now and again. You're unlikely to get that trouser flapping sensation that you'll likely get with the 6x10" but you do get a lot of volume. I can easily match and overpower (if I wanted to) my guitarist who uses a Peavey 5150 120w valve combo.

Jazz neck, doesn't look like a Jazz and only one single coil pickup

For me it has always been about looks. The vast majority of basses I have owned have been beautiful: whether it was my minty Rick 4003 Blue Boy or 30th anniversary stingray, looks have dominated my decisions. The reason i went with the Gold Warmoth was that I wanted something with every good feature I have had on a bass and make it something amazing to look at. Its very much a 'hey everybody, look at me' kind of bass and was purely intentional as I am a huge show-off. I'm not big headed but I'm not afraid to let people know that i show-off. Ampwise, my recent driving force has been smaller and lighter gear but still powerful to handle gigs with no PA support. When I as young it was all about having what my favourite player at the time had - the black Musicman SR5 and Gallien 800RB during my Flea Phase, Rick 4003 for Yes and so on. Then I decided that I didn't like certain basses so out went Jazzes and for a long time actives as well. It became all about a powerful passive tone which I've also captured on the Warmoth. now and again I'll use an active bass but I'm mainly about passives these days. Right at this minute its all about Warwick basses since acquiring my 5 string $$ Corvette at the weekend. I've owned a Thumb NT5 and couldn't handle the neck dive, the streamer stage I 5 string only comes as a broadneck so I've narrowed down a possible next purchase to either an active bubinga Corvette 5 or a streamer stage II 5 string. This could change in the next couple of weeks. I've always promised myself a Streamer, a Yamaha BB5000a, CAR precision with maple board & a maple board fretless precision. I've been lucky to own every other bass I've ever wanted to own. The thing is that when I'm gigging regularly I'm happy with my gear but the longer the gaps between gigs, the more I start to get restless, possibly due to forgetting how good my gear actually is.

some people swear by them, some people swear at them They were the be all and end all not so long ago but now that there are more companies coming out with small heads, there's not as much love for them. nothing wrong with them but it does mean that you are likely to see more of them in the classifieds. You've also got the Genz Benz Shuttles, Gallien Krueger MB2-500, Ashdown Little Giant and a couple of others. I went the Genz route as it sounded the best for what I was looking for, having a variable gain tube preamp.

Yeah, should still have a warranty. If you've checked it with another amp and another bass then I'd get it checked out. May be something simple that's gone wrong. I've heard of people who thought that their cone was blowing only to discover that it was the cable that goes from the driver to the input bumping off the back of the cone. I've never had the back off my own one so don't know what its like back there

being perfectly honest, you are unlikely to get anything decent for £50 unless you are very lucky. I did see a Hartke 210 TP cab in Smack Generator for £69. I used to have a similar setup to what you saw. I had a 7210 2x10" Trace combo with a 1048H cab underneath. It produced a healthy amount of bass but required an unhealthy amount of lifting to move the bugger. Tough as nails. the 4x10" survived a drop down a flight of stairs with the guitarist still holding onto it against a wall at the bottom with only a bit of a dent.

It depends on a few things. The sound will change with the number of people in the room and depending on how loud you are, your ears may be telling you that you're not as loud as you were earlier but its really you damaging your ears. If you don't play at your usual level during a sound check then it will sound different during the gig but, yes, it can be caused by a bad sound engineer. I'd check all other options first before accusing him as he has the ability to make you sound sh*t if he wants to

The 4 string Marcus Miller Jazz is CIJ as well as the Sting sig. Maybe something to do with the style of bass (ie good) makes it easier to produce it there.

Have you tried the electronics in your bass or even the battery if there is one? A farty note will cease to be farty if you touch the cone as you are stopping it from vibrating. I had a similar problem with a Behringer 4x10" alu coned pile of sh*te. At first I thought it was the speaker grill and ended up with dozens of beer mats stuck between the cab and the grill. It wasn't until after about 3 gigs that all 4 drivers decided to part company with the cab and disintegrate. Was it you that got the cab from SHX as a factory second as it were? I remember someone here did but don't know why it was. probably just the finish. I've been using my 1212L for a while now and I am probably one of the heaviest players out there. I give my basses a good hammering and have yet to hear or see the speakers do anything other than what they are supposed to. Its always possible that its a bad driver (if there is such a thing). The Speakon on my cab doesn't lock and after several months, including posting on Talkbass and emailing Jorg himself I have seen f*** all from his end. He did say that he had posted one to me as I had previously said that I would be happy to fit a new one. Not best pleased and not about to contact him again. Have you tried contacting him or SHX if that's where you got it?

Only one problem with splitting into 4 strings 5 strings etc is that what if someone is looking to trade their 4 string for a 5 string? Would it go under 4 or 5 or would it go in a completely different 'trades' subforum where it begins to get very messy? I've found in the past that if something that has been on but not added to in a while is bumped, someone may not have noticed it first time round. Another possibility is that since GAS is such a large variable, maybe what no one wanted last week, a dozen people want this week. One annoying thing is that if there is something that you are after and you see that it has been updated, you want to check it. Usually its to see if they've added pictures, reduced the price or provided some more information so a bump to that person is about as welcome as a fart in a spacesuit as it gets their hopes up. I've seen people looking for stuff in the wanted section that had been in the for sale section a couple of weeks ago but is now on the 4th page so someone hasn't spotted it there. I'd be up for a more definitive bumparoo rule. If I've been guilty for it in the past, its had nothing to do with GAS but being skint. Things seem to have slowed down a bit so stuff is staying on the first page for longer meaning less need for bumpolas.

The best one I ever used was the Owen Bass Gremlin - quite pricey new but pop up here from time to time around the £60 mark. I just don't do pedals orI would still have it.

My drummer told me that there is this competition to see how long any drummer can stay perfectly in time with a click track. The world record is something like 31 beats so I wouldn't worry about it too much. I've never used a metronome ever and never had the inclination to use one as I don't feel that it is something that would benefit me. For some reason, I tap my feet on the off beat - eg tap on 2 & 4 or if its a faster song, on the 'and' of each eigth note. I wouldn't get too hung up on it. As ARGH said, as long its not losing you gigs. If you are really bad at timing then I could understand but 6 milliseconds is hee haw and absolutely nothing to worry about. If anything, its more about the feel than the timing. Unless you're playing with a click track, which I hate as it makes everything too regimented and not very fluid, then you and the drummer should be playing in time with each other.
