1. would any one be offended if I decided to do this with a matching headstock I know Herbie's bass doesn't have one but wouldn't it look cool with the same colour combo!
2. I've been experimenting with the oxidising...but to no avail. I guess its just one of those things that only time can recreate. The paint back then would have probably had a much higher metal content too which would mean it reacts differently. I ended up having to lightly clear coat this bass too as the metaillic nitro paints made nowadays tend to shed the colour fairly easily if left uncoated...meaning whoever played it would probably look like a smurf after a sweaty gig.
3. I actually employed about 60% chipping and 40% rubbing..maybe my crap camera
4. Ok so Ive been busy relicing the bass..I decided to only loosely base it around Herbies bass as His is so unique and I didn't want to try and completely recreate it. This is my first attempt at relicing a colour over colour bass....Its bloody difficult!!
5. I had the pleasure of co building the Zoot Bass he is playing there with Mike Walsh. A truely lovely guy with an amazing talent. He keeps to himself and doesn't really talk about how he makes his music which to me is part of the magic of it all.
6. Everything to do with dealing with Jim is an absolute pleasure. A top guy and an expert at packing. I just purchased a load of parts from him. each part packaged seperatly and labeled...it was like chirstmas opening them up! Thanks again Jim.
7. aguilar tone hammer pedal is the way to go!
8. nice. I was offered a job to go and work in their custom shop when it was in boston! couldn;t go due to new emmingration laws in the end!
9.
Do people ever wonder if, as a breed, we bass players are not a little bit f***ing awkward?
Haha. Well said. were all a bit mental.
10. oooo luuuurvely! Nice work mate! shame you couldn't do it as a blonde!
11. much better than the other attak attak from the states! nice one
12. So I emailed about the guitar expressing an interest in this and a guy called Andy McDermott (ebay seller soundcity20) emailed back saying it was still available. I asked for more pictures and he sent me the pictures from the recently ended red sparkle precision which recently went on ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1963-Fender-Precisio...d1#ht_590wt_910 haha.
13.
Hey Wes, did you have that hanging up in GAK for a while? I seem to recall being in its presence or am I dreaming?
It may of been hanging up in there when I bring it in to mess about on. I think i remember showing to you actually.
14. haha yeah theres some rust there for sure! Seriously the best example of relic'ing Ive ever seen from the custom shop.
15. This is more of a feeler to see if anyone out there has what I'm looking for. I had this bass custom ordered from the Custom Shop in 2009. This bass caused a bit of a hoo-ha amongst fender as I specified exactly how i wanted the relicing done with pictures etc and it ended up being mostly done by a Master builder (even though the bass is stated as a team built). After this bass was finished you can no longer specify exact relicing without paying for a Master Built version. Cost me an arm and a leg even still! Ok the specs 59 C shape QS maple neck with dark slab rosewood board 7.25" radius. heavy relic neck finish Body is finished in this order White primer- gold base coat - Candy red -Olympic white all nitro. matching headstock. Hardcase with all the candy + original strings which i took off to put flats on. The bass plays absolutely incredibly and sounds exactly as a p should. its strung with Flats. Flippyfloop and Headofire have both played this too and absolutely love it. Im looking to trade for a decent Pre-CBS P bass or maybe a Jazz, if anyone has anything PM me. Sale price £2550. Firm. bass is available to try in brighton.
16. I have this WHY for trade...shes pretty versatile and as far as I know shes completely stock bar a replaced tone pot
17. apologies. I just think I know everything about every bass ever made and can't help but have a cocky answer to everything written. Can you tell me if the jesus face is pre-beard era? I hear these are worth a lot more, espeially with 'real clay' eyes...
18. is it as good or not as good as a stagg?
19. nothing wrong with that! I think it looks pretty nice in that finish.
20. nice lookin bass. never understood why they are called a '63 though when they have slab fingerboards!
21. So heres a couple of updated shots with the Lake placid blue on. Its a very close match to how Herbies would of been new. when relic'd I have a few tricks that should oxidize the right parts to darken it off. This oxidization occurred on his bass as there is no clear coat over the metallic finish, this is also why there is no weather checking on his bass. EDIT - the first pic shows the initial coat...and the second pic is after 3 coats of LPB
22. Just seen the new Aguilar Tone Hammer 500 amp heads! they look brilliant! Tiny and only 4lbs too!
23. Looks like this is going to be loaded with a fair amount of early 60s original hardware too now. Tuners, Bridge, thumbrest, string tree, strap buttons, screws etc. Going to use Suhr vintage wound pups which are the best Ive ever heard. Going to be a beast of a bass! Wes
