  1. I asked a lady out for a drink, she said how about 8 tomorrow?

No, I said, that's too many.

I saw this today in a similar vein - A man was visiting his home town in Wales having been living in the US for 40 years. Someone asked why he moved. Because of a woman. That's nice, who was she? Margaret Thatcher.

  2. Isn’t it crazy that nobody during WW2 had ever heard electric slap bass?

Opening up the old debate, who is best, Mark King or Trigger Alpert...

  3. Saw/heard Dave Bronze at a gig last night. Blooming good isn't he?!

I did think the headstock which was all I could see looked like a Lakland.

@Mickeyborohe was with Tom Jones. Little 300 capacity gig as an album launch. My pal Gary Wallis is on drums and invited me.

  5. The DR Black Beauties on my ska Jazz (not for much longer) are the worst strings I think I've ever used. The G was dull straight out of the pack, the replacement string I eventually got was the same, and they're going dead already after just two rehearsals. And they sound crap too. The only thing in their favour is that they look good. New set of Elixirs in the post as I write.

Couple of years back there was a big problem with counterfeit DR strings. Did you get yours from a bonafide dealer?

  8. 20 week scan last Friday - it's a Teeb-boy! :swoon:

  11. Anyone playing a Cort GB75JH (or JJ)?

    1. Mykesbass

      Mykesbass

I had the earlier Korean model - GB75 JH which I liked a lot (so much that I got Jon Shuker to model the neck on my Shuker 5 to the same dimensions). Didn't get on with the active circuitry. Now have a GB55JJ as a backup, and to have a fretted, roundwound J to be completely different to my fretless flatwound Shuker P. Again, really nice playing bass. Very good B string on both.

  14. Hello. I'm illy (or Ilana). I live in Oxford currently but I'm moving to Brighton shortly. I have two kids, 9 years and 4 years. Been playing since 1991... I'm old... I own two J basses and 2 Spector basses, all 5 string. I started playing 5 string 1992, first 5 string was a Charvel Fusion V. It's all I could afford at the time. I do being mum and music. Equally divided.......(I wish....) I use an EBS preamp into power amp and into two Markbass Traveller cabs. I also have an (Eminence loaded) custom 2x10/HF "Unicorn" cab. A Traynor SB500H for light, easy-handling if I do gigs and a TC Electronic BC208 and Traynor SB200H next to my bed, bedroom practice, of course. That's it.

Not as good, naturally, but OK. Felt sorry for bass player (who is a mate) who was really nervous knowing I was there!!

Good luck with that - hope they are more popular than the one I listed (now where's that tumbleweed emoji...)

  19. Elvis fan?  Stewblack, if I'm right you're an Elvis Costello fan.  In this case can you explain his receipt of an OBE?  Not just why he got one but also why he accepted it, as I don't believe his "my mum told me to" story for a nanosecond, mainly because of his unfathomable ego.

I normally like to be positive but this bothers me somewhat.

    Cheers

    Davo

I was a huge Costello fan. Still love his music, but I do feel that he has morphed into something his younger self would have hated. Playing one of those posh picnic type gigs at Hampton Court, sponsored by Waitrose put me right off him. The OBE was only a short hop from there.

  21. Our trombone dude passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on Wednesday. Whole band is stunned and bereft... can't believe we'll never see him again. Such a lovely guy.
    RIP Stewy the 'Bone. </3

  22. And so, after 10 years as a covers-only unit, we're reinventing ourselves as an originals band. God help us.

Happened with my band - not 10 years, but a couple of years doing the Blues pub circuit, couple of new young members, written a whole load of songs and now going out in November on a 9 date national tour.  Good luck!

  23. Do old schol thumpy type flats (i.e not Fender/D'Addario bright types) without a completely dead E string exist????

    1. Mykesbass

      Mykesbass

Yes. I've got the LaBella Deep Talking - even the low B is lovely.
