1. Could be. Mine was terrible at first but it just kind of clicked after a while. In all seriousness, treat it like a fretted in terms of trying to play cleanly and in tune. You can worry about all the flowery techniques once you've got that sorted.
2. Do a massive slide into or out of every single note. Best get a chorus pedal too.
3.
Hey Chris - and welcome. Mainz is a good place, did a good gig there once in the SWR studios. I've just come home from a five week tour of Germany. Been touring there since 2001, about 10 tours by now, and sadly the most I can say is 'Ein cafe zum mit nehmen' and I'm sure I've just spelt that wrong. Anyway - welcome and enjoy!!!
Just shrug and say "Ich verstehe nur Bahnhof" if anyone says anything to you that you don't understand.
4. I'm not going to inflict my terrible German on you but welcome Chris. My old band went around Germany and did a few shows back in 2010, great country and I'd like to go back again at some point.
5. I've heard your band name mentioned on the 9hz forum boards and we've done a few heavy shows in Scotland so our paths may have crossed before now. Welcome to BC anyway!
6. Very rough and ready shot of my 2 main guitars, a Gordon Smith semi-hollow Gypsy bought from a fellow BC'er and an MIJ Jazzmaster dating from (I think) 1998 from the serial number. The pickups were dire so I replaced them with a pair of MOJO pickups '58 replicas and now it sounds great. The chrome knobs are also something I added as the original plastic ones were getting pretty filthy. It's also got a Mustang bridge as the original JM bridge is just ridiculous. I like the Gordon Smith as it's very easy to play but there's just something about it that hasn't quite clicked with me so I'm in 2 minds about whether to keep it.
7.
I've just had an idea . I'm contacting Korg this afternoon............
If it's putting it on top of a fridge filled with lead, Ampeg beat you to it.
8.
I know what you mean, I get it from playing my guitar for more than an hour & hate playing cheap sounding keys (especially most home keyboards). If I did go down the keys route, it would need to have a really good palette with some good EPs & pads (hence my choices ). Enough!!! You've got me considering it again!
Slightly OT but I never find many synth sounds that work well in isolation but it's a different story when played in a band context. I had to argue with our singer about putting a lead line on a track and it ended up being his favourite part of it. For that reason, I don't think I'd pick synths although I do enjoy noodling around with software ones.
9. Guitar, I think my guitar playing is slightly left field and a lot more interesting than my bass playing which I always feel very average at. I dabble with other stuff too but I feel most comfortable on guitar and I'm way past the stage where I get regularly frustrated with how bad I am.
10. My personal preference would be bone, and I do like my Gordon Smith but I'm not 100% sold on brass. I'm sure graphtec is fine, anything nice and dense that doesn't effect tuning would be good. Just not plastic as I use a lot of chords with open strings and personally don't like the sound plastic gives.
11. A load but favourites are:- The National - Boxer Kate Bush - Hounds of Love Paul Simon - Graceland Isis - Panopticon Dredg - Leitmotif A mixed bag as always.
12. Though so, it would seem a bit odd to go to all that effort and then use a plastic nut!
13. Used the Planet Waves equivalent, albeit not heavily, for a good while and had no problems with it. I was worried about the solderless design but it's been a solid, reliable cable.
14. Very nice, but is the nut plastic or some other material?
15. I get noise when using it with my Jazzmaster but nothing with humbuckers (I used it on guitar, not bass....) on a Diago. Depends how many pedals you have really, I have mine 2nd to last before a delay and after 2 dirt pedals but I was considering some kind of home-made box to move it between 2 points in the chain. Never got round to it but I'm sure you could knock something up reasonably easily. Mods, reverbs and delays are mostly great, filters and dirt have some good stuff but nothing fantastic. Worth a punt, especially as the price was sub £100 recently from fxpedal.co.uk.
16. That is a beauty, I'd be too scared to play it out if it was a one-off at that price though so it's useless to me. Still, phwoar.
17.
Bump for a great pedal! Make me an offer!
All I can offer is love.
18. Very nice, I've got a sunburst MIJ Jazzmaster from (I think) '98. The pickups were terrible so I replaced them with a pair of Mojo '58 JM pickups and it now sounds great.
19.
Hardwire Supernatural
Another one I'd never heard of now added to the GAS list. Thanks
20.
The Moog pedal is pretty solid. The cord issue was a 2 min fix. It's quite long to start with & all I did was unwind from the spindle inside & tie it back on, that was @ a year ago when playing at home & it's been fine since. The pedal itself is made of a thick abs plastic & has a metal baseplate. It feels solid underfoot & haven't had any gig issues.
Thanks, I'll get one ordered.
21.
The moog ep-2 works with it & it's solid (though I've had to change the cord in it once). Also has a handy potentiometer on the side for adjusting it's range.
Apart from the cord issue, how sturdy are they? I'd like to not have to spend £100 odd on a decent pedal unless I have to. Although £40 isn't a massive outlay. Decisions...
22. Thumb implants.
23. My official Line 6 one died after a fairly short space of time and despite being kept securely in a pedal case so I can't recommend them. I'd 2nd the Ernie Ball, a couple of friends use them and they seem very well made and have a nice feel to them. Mission Control pedals do a Line 6 specific expression which looks very good and is around £100. That's if you can find a UK dealer with them in stock.
24. The M5 was on sale at fxpedal.co.uk recently for about £95 so well worth a punt. I only use the octave settings on guitar so can't say how it works on bass but you can program the heel/toe expression pedal intervals pretty easily.
25.
I agree with this sentiment too. I`ve found people to be very helpful when asking about gear, but as well as that, when trading gear, and I`ve bought/sold a lot, I`ve had nothing but good dealings with my fellow Basschatters, including some very nice cups of tea & chats when delivering/collecting.
Indeed, there's the occasional spat but you know, welcome to the internet. Nothing but good stories from the sales and trades I've had on here either.
