You can use a P bass pup, if you can find a way of fixing them to the end of the board. Someone on here may even have something you could try, sadly I don't. All the best, John

I like them and they are very popular, hence their longevity. I enjoy Marcus Baylor's playing, nicely understated. Quite unusual for the genre, sadly for me. Yellow Jackets can be a "gateway band" for those funk lovers who want to explore something a little more complex, as they still keep a memorable melody/refrain in most of their tunes. Obviously not complex enough for some. I like them very much, but they are as far as I like to go within the sea that is jazz, before getting bored sh@¥less. But then again I prefer music for the "hard of thinking"...you know, songs.

Just looked through this thread, including my own Chilean red induced nonsense, and I've come to the stunning, and sober, conclusion that:- What other bass players choose to play is no one else's business but their own. Don't get why there's so much venom aimed at other players.....get on with your own playing instead of aiming the spud guns at others, they don't care what you think. Back to the wine.......mmmmmm

This thread reminds me of something someone once said about women "dressing up" for a night out.....they don't do it to attract men, they do it to show off to other women and ward them off. I wonder sometimes whether some bass players play to impress other bass players rather than thinking at any point about what the song. So, just like the overdressed "slapper" desperate to be noticed on a Saturday night, the overplaying slapper desperate to be noticed, overdresses their playing, hoping to impress........sadly for them, no one at most gigs gives a toss. But what do I know, I'm an old slapper.

A very good point. I was watching you tube clip of benny goodman/Louis Stewart playing "Rose room", no idea who the bass player was, but I loved his sound. But there is no way I'd ever find that tone myself, I wouldn't know how. There appears, even to my dull ears, too many variations to factor in regarding DB, that I fear it would be a very expensive journey to find someone else's "tone". You once said "it's not a competition" Bilbo, which helped enormously as I for one felt like I had to sound a certain way. I'll stick with my feeble attempts at trying to play the right notes, at the right time, and not worry too much about anything else.

Drummers should only be let loose in a band once they can play along (in time) to Trans-Island Skyway and nail the single best drum break ever (round about 4:10...) I know I've benefited from playing with more experienced musicians over the years, so perhaps you can help him? I like the idea of recording rehearsals then listening to them. Very exposing and uncomfortable at times, but a live recording doesn't lie.
