1. Thanks for the quick replies. I thought they might have been hand rubbed on the thighs of Essex virgins, which was why they took so long. The delay wouldn't be such an issue but the new build has been delayed as a result. I heard good things about the Hotwires, however I can't see me using Status again......by the looks of things I'll never get to use Hotwires, full stop. I do try and support Bristish manufacturers where possible, but come on...a month for a set of basic strings. Dawn was very pleasant when I called, but it didn't quicken the delivery time. John
 2. I ordered some strings from Status 13 March, not arrived yet! I called them 2 weeks ago to ask about delivery, they said they would be with me soon, and implied that I was being a bit impatient?? Is this normal for Status strings? Is each set hand made from scratch, is this normal? Am I being unreasonable? What's the normal lead time for Hotwires in your experience? I ended up ordering a different make from another supplier in the end, and they have arrived at the luthiers' who is making me a bass. John
 3.
Some of us have GAS, mate. Just went and bought something else in your absence but if your man can give us the skinny on those blotches..............
That's a good idea to be honest. I'll ask Derek to give an assessment on what would help with the blotches and post here.
 4.
looks like the 'luthier' doesnt have say via the OP. Nothing via PM either. ilm out of this.
Just got back from short holiday sorry to have kept you waiting for such a long time mate, 24 hours to get a reply to a p.m. is outrageous!
 5. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...IT#ht_500wt_949 There's one on Ebay, nothing to do with me, just saying. John.
 6. Considering some interesting offers, just a bump to see if any more interest before I decide?
 7.
the 85 sticker is the model number - the higher the number the better the bass. This looks pretty nice and at a great price too, wont be around for long!
Thanks Luke.
 8. Posting this for a friend (also a local Luthier). The bass came into his possession a while ago (12 months or so), from a customer. Her story was that she had gigged the bass for many years, but due to an accident was unable to play again. The bass was stored in a case in her loft for 12 years or so. She got it down from said attic and opened the case and found that the foam lining had stuck to the body. Derek bought it off her with the foam still stuck to the bass. So, after removing the foam, the body was left with patches on it where the foam had been. The Tokai logo has either faded, or been removed, either way you can still see the outline, so it certainly hasn't been sanded off. From researching the serial number, it looks like it is from 1984-5, yes there is a sticker on the back of the neck with 85 on it, so perhaps there's the clue? I've put it through it's paces and it sounds and plays like a fretless jazz should. Thump from the neck pup, growl from the rear, nice and smooth with both, it's a nice solid Japanese Tokai with lots of "mojo" I believe the marketing expression is on here. Yes I would buy it, but I have no money. Anyway, it has some nicks on the top off the headstock, and it could do with a clean up. But Derek would do a full set up on it if you bought it. Will come with a cheap but new functional gig bag. Bass is located in North Dorset and you are welcome to go visit Derek to play it. Or will be sent well parcelled up. £300 + p&p, no offers sorry. John

 11.
Er.... I can't comment about the Yamahas as I've never played one, but my mid-eighties Status Series II is the most tonally versatile instrument I have ever played! Maybe I need to try some Yammies though?!
I think in comparison between the 2 models in the shop, the Status wasn't particularly versatile. I guess I'm just saying that it didn't have £300 more features or build quality than the Yammy. It wasn't a slight against Status, more of a hurrah for Yamaha. I have owned 2 Statii and thought they were great, also had a status graphite neck on a custom jazz, again great fast playing neck. But I'm still playing the cheap old BB604, and some on here have described them as being sterile, so each to their own I guess
 12.
Fair point, but I have done trades before via courier services with no problems....I could give you my landline number and address etc, a link to my band's website, my ebay account username etc etc so you know I'm genuine, and I would trust a *reputable* courier (ie Parcelforce) with my bass. Just let me know if you'd like to see some pics of it, as it's doing me no good sitting unplayed; and I really do need a new amp! Cheers
Hi Gareth, not an issue of trust at all, it's just the logistics. With an exchange I quite like the idea of a face to face, don't know why? But I do love them Grooves.... I'll chuck you my email details via PM. John
 13.
Apart from snobbishness, I would add blandness. I've never played a bad one either (haven't played many I'll admit) and heard only good reports but ... what is there to attract? Seems rather characterless somehow.
Reminds me of when a mate of mine ask me to accompany him to the Basscentre in Brum. This was early 90's. He had his heart set on buying a Status, so off we went. He played around on a couple of Statii, whilst I nosed around the shop. I played a couple of Yammies and was very impressed. I had a chat with the assistant, who rated the model I was playing higher than the Status my mate was trying, even though it was £300 cheaper. Anyway, I tried to persuade my friend to buy the Yamaha, but he didn't want to know because Status was a "name" he could be proud of (his words)...the assistant said that was Yamaha's problem, the name wasn't associated with basses, they were under priced and therefore seen as "budget/mid market". My mate could have put the £300 towards a better amp, but no he wanted the "name". As for lack of character, I have been playing a BB604 for 8 years, and have recently bought a BB605. I reckon on dialing in most tones I need, as for his Status, pretty one dimensional "hi-fi" for my tastes. But then again, it's in the fingers isn't it?
 14.
Any interest in a trade for my immaculate 5 string Status Groove bass (burgundy?) Cheers
Hi Gareth, I miss my Groove 5 string...so this is tempting. But, I should have added that an exchange realistically is only going to take place an hours/hour and a half's' drive from me. So that restricts it to Bristol, Basingstoke, Bournemouth, Exeter areas really. Leeds is a bit too far. Cheers, John
 15. Sale fell through Bump. Trades only now. 5 string bass EUB/ADB stuff Lightweight 8 ohm 12" cab Lightweight amp 6 string electric (tele's preferred) 6 string acoustic OWHY, try me? John
 16. Nothing to do with me, but I saw this and it might interest someone? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/5-STRING-UPRIGHT-BAS...f#ht_2334wt_932
 17.
Thanks all for advice. I think I am going to try out some of those foam sound hole plugs and add a mag pickup so I have the choice of piezo, mag or both (since my Coda combo has two channels). Surely that should make things better?!!!
I have to say that the TM piezo I bought here has a lot of headroom, without feedback. I have combined it with my Schaller mag, mixed through the K&K twin channel preamp, into the CMD121P, and I seem to have a good balance of volume and string and natural body resonance. Mind you I only compete with 2 jazz guitarists in the quartet (and no drums!), so I'm not competing for "sound space" as you appear to be Clarky. Your two channel Coda option would seem a good route to try. John
 18. Bought a BB605 from Sean.....eventually ...anyway, top guy, packaged really well and kept in touch all the way. Cheers, John
 19. SOLD SOLD Sale fell through, just one of those things. One of the newer Trace combos. According to TE it will push out 600 watts at 4Ohm with an ext cab. Under 2 years old, so stll under warranty. all the spec here: http://www.trace-elliot.co.uk/ Bought on a whim for a different sound from my Mark Bass combo, but will never use it, as I only gig double bass these days and have a Line 6 Bass Pod that has more than enough sounds/models on it than I will ever use. Plus compared to the Markbass it's heavy! Very good condition. Comes with TE cover and BFC-4 pedal and it has pretty lights! Will courier, using a mates music shop courier. If I can find the box, I'll pack it in that, but if not he's got one I can use. Happy to be collected, to try, or meet up somewhere. It looks like these are not holding their value, so price reduction. Also now on Gumtree £370 That's £1,000 off RRP
 20. Old Framus ply basses are great, I'm on the look out for one all the time...you lucky, lucky..thing. There's one on Ebay at the mo' just down the road from me. Some say they are the European equivalent of Kay's...but I always thought Kay's did underwear catalogues ??? but maybe that was just a distant teenage memory.

 22.
Hi - really sorry about this, but after reading the replies on the thread & playing the Groove for ages today I think I'll regret moving it on at the mo, so I'm withdrawing it for the time being. Looks like I'll have to find some other stuff to sell... Cheers, B. P.S.
Oh so glad you've come to your senses! What were you thinking? Repeat after me...never sell Groove basses.never sell Groove basses.never sell Groove basses.never sell Groove basses.never sell Groove basses.never sell Groove basses.never sell Groove basses
