1. Yes, you can add one of those. (Long version: the amp will deliver 300W into 4 ohms, so you'll get approx 2/3 of the 300W into the combo's 8 ohm speaker. Adding the 8 ohm extension cab will give an overall 4 ohms, so the amp will deliver the full 300W. What a 10 inch and a 15 inch speaker will sound like when mixed in this way cannot easily be predicted so you'll have to be the judge.) Yes, loud enough for a pub or small village hall, but not enough for Wembley. (Long version: The extension cab will make things louder but only you will be able to judge how loud is loud enough because there are many variables, including speaker efficiency. Loud enough also depends on what sort of music you play and whether the drummer is an animal or the guitarist turns up to 11. )
 2. I've given up showing our guitarists how to coil cables properly. Their preferred method is to bundle them into a rough coil and then tie the coil in a knot before throwing them into a carrier bag. I could sort of understand such abuse if coiling properly was particularly difficult. Oh well.
 3.
Tower PCs are notoriously difficult to carry around on a pub crawl.
Is it not possible to go on a pub crawl without an internet connection these days?
 4.
Since my PC died I've been viewing BC on my phone. So I've been learning things about the advantages (and otherwise) of mobile browsing.
There are 'advantages'? Tiny screen, crap 'keyboard', expensive bandwidth and - as you've pointed out - slow. Good luck with trying to change websites to make your browsing easier
 5.
I don't like slagging people off, but this guy has gone to far.!!! What the hell does this guy think he's doing.!!?? i looked in horror when i saw this guy drumming.. he looks like he's having a fit at 0.40. does he actually think this looks cool.??? and he stole the show.? the music is very cheesy too, with the cabaret man on vocals.. i hate stupid show boating like this. its as empty as a cheeseburger wrapper.
But worth sharing and therefore reinforcing his fame?
 6. "But you try telling that to the young people of today and they won't believe you"
 7. Funny you should say that. The school band I was in couldn't afford a PA system so we made our own. I built the amp using two 125W modular PCBs. It worked OK but the physical build quality was shocking really, with a butt-jointed bare plywood box, misaligned controls and sockets on the aluminium front panel (well you try filing out all those holes accurately when you only have one 1/4 inch drill bit!) and dymo tape labels for the lettering As for the inside wiring, well let's just say that it wouldn't meet today's electrical safety standards
 8.
Always pop into these places just in case they are ever selling something they dont quite know what theyve got bass wise and theres a bragin to be head. More often than not its way overpriced crap they theyre trying to flog but its always worth keeping an eye on i guess.
I guess that approach works both ways and they are pricing high in the hope that someone comes along that doesn't know what prices are like elsewhere. Plus of course everything is used so the perception is that the prices must be cheaper than anywhere else. A bit like DIY superstores that position themselves as offering 'trade' prices and always having sales to create the public perception of bargains. After a while it becomes so ingrained that people don't even bother looking elsewhere. Still, as long as people are happy with the prices they pay then all's well I suppose.
 9. Not PLJ, but I hope this version doesn't hurt too much http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e5hCsodlGjE
 10.
No, but times have changed. Get them blogging and doing YouTube videos and you'll all be rich as Cresus in no time. Finished, all that manual labour stuff. Link in to the networking age, that's where the money is earned this week. Next week will be different, however; there'll be a 'new kid in town' and YouTube will be 'old hat'. Oh well. Sigh..!
Funny you should say that. There was a report on R4 this morning about Vine, which is basically a hosting service for 6 second looping videos complete with a 'views' counter. Part of the report was how some US kids are using Vine to earn enough to pay their uni fees, with some earning 6-figures a year (presumably dollars) and there was speculation of when the first 'Vine millionaire' will arrive.
 11.
You will simply have to send your children out to work. If they love you they will understand.
Not so easy though is it, now that 'elf 'n' safety won't let you send them up chimneys and the evil milk snatcher closed down all the mines, plus you can't drag the little urchins away from their Xboxes.
 12.
If they can afford it, then why not?
Of course - if they can afford it. But the topic is not being able to afford it, or at least not everything, and having to make choices. Discreet was just pointing out that he thinks good bass gear is more important to him than his car. As the owner of 13 and 16 year old cars I agree with him and personally would rather spend a month sailing in the Caribbean than buy a new car. But we all have different priorities.
 13. . . . precisely when that person is a p1ssed-off musician.
 14.
I work with two nice lads, they started when they were 16 (twins) they save their money and work hard so they had good mopeds, then 125cc bikes, then a car each, then a landrover each for playing around in, another lad that works for a building firm we work for thinks they have it on a plate and he is always complaining that he can't drive never mind afford a car or two cars! But he has tanning injections, slimming pills, thinks nothing of spending £60 on a shirt then getting it ripped the same night pissed up having a fight followed by a few lines, he can't see that night alone would pay for a months worth of driving lessons! I dont care that he is a knob or a coke head, that is his look out but it is not fair that he moans about the twins having a car etc IMO.
Yep, the story of most people's lives can be traced to the decisions they make. Won't stop some people moaning that it's not fair though.
 15.
It all depends on your personal [s]circumstances[/s] choices imo,
A pedantic fix, but I agree with you. I know someone who drinks like a fish, never has a car more than two years old and moans about not having any money.
 16. I guess those 93,000 people yesterday and 50,000 people today didn't go there to listen to a blues/country/softish rock covers outfit. Maybe if they dressed up as a mouse . . . . .
 17. Talking of cruises, I know a couple who spend a great deal of their time these days on cruises. They used to be lawyers but decided to 'downshift' in their 40s, sell up and buy a big house & land in Wales to start a gardening business, which was always a big hobby for them (fair enough). After gaining a bit of a name for themselves (Gold medals at Chelsea flower show etc) they got themselves plugged into the 'cruising circuit' giving on board horticulture lectures and 'port talks' (a quick briefing about what to do during a day ashore when the boat docks somewhere). They reckon they 'work' only a few hours each week and the rest of the time is theirs. No pay but all-inclusive everything else, including business class flights to and from the points they join and leave the ship. Last time I saw them they were just back from a one month South American cruise and about to head off for a short fjord cruise before heading back to the Caribbean for a month. They say they could probably spend all their time on cruise ships if they wanted to, but feel they need a change of view after about a month! My point is that there are all sorts of ways of doing what you love but the real trick is to become truly independent and free to do whatever you choose. My friends have made enough money in 20 years to comfortably last them for the rest of their lives, they have their own house, have raised a family and they have no debts. They are completely free of everything and, within reason, can do whatever they choose, whenever they choose. If they had followed their gardening interest as soon as they left school, they'd still be doing a job they love but they would be pretty much dependent on working at that same job, day in, day out, whether they wanted to or not, for the rest of their lives, with no real hope of a comfortable retirement, never mind one starting in their early 40s. And let's face it, most of our musical heroes do much the same sort of thing once they hit the big time.
 18.
What about an app that sends 2000 volts through the phone when you try to video a live performance?
Or when someone tries to steal your phone . . .
 19.
I use one of those as a backup and rehearsal head and guess what? Mine did that as well. Hartke had a rather large batch of circuit boards delivered in the HA3000 days which had some very poor soldering - I spent about 10 mins with a soldering iron repairing the bad joints and it's worked ever since. There's a rather fair chance that you've got the same problem.
Yes, the description of the fault sounded very like a bad connection. Blown components don't tend to come back to life. Re-flowing solder joints can often fix things . . . as I once did with my old Ampeg combo. As for the OP's situation, seems like a lot of good advice has already been given. I'd emphasise the point about getting regular well-paid gigs - if that's happening then the band can't be doing much wrong. I can understand a bit of frustration if band members are always buying new gear but then they don't have the benefit of a family life so I know whose shoes I'd rather be in. Chin up and play the rest of them off the stage!
 20. I can't help with a recommendation, but in my experience of non-musical things you'll have to pay for a formal valuation so whoever you finally choose, I'd suggest checking with your insurance company that their valuation will be accepted before you shell out for a potentially useless piece of paper.
 21. I hadn't thought about the teacher cancelling - a very fair point for a gigging teacher.
 22. I'd think 24 hours should be a minimum because it would be difficult to fill a cancelled slot at such short notice so the teacher would lose money. 5 days might be perceived as too long by students. It should focus their minds on their commitment but gives more time for something really unexpected to crop up. If it was me, I'd probably not bother with a formal policy and just play it by ear. If a regular student canceled for a really good reason then I'd go with it. If they didn't have a really good reason or ever did it again I would never give them another lesson unless they paid a week in advance. But that's easy for me to say because the chance of anyone paying me for a lesson is pretty much zero
 23. It's a bit like one of those philosophical conumdrums - you know, if a tree falls down when no one is there, does it make a sound? If an artist makes stuff that no one likes, what is the point of their 'talent'? Fortunately, with 7 billion people on the planet, there's bound to be quite a few people that will like whatever someone plays, so popularity contents can ensue. But imagine playing stuff that no one liked? What would be the point? Could they even be classed as having any talent at all? Still, plenty of art 'experts' have been fooled by chimps so perhaps therein lies the answer.

 25. When I get back home from this gig I'm gonna put the footage on youtube where it will go viral and I'll make millions from advertising revenue. Can't fail. Bwahahaha . . . .
