Your best (and worst!) bass gear purchases of 2019?
krispn replied to Al Krow's topic in General Discussion
And pedals 😀 -
The model p is a good pick up too and certainly in my top three. I’ve hopefully nabbed another one or two pick ups from our plank spanking cousins on TB and eager to give them a go. As well and the aforementioned Fender CS ‘59 I’ve a David Allen 1088 which is a cross between and 60’s/70’s p pick up. Worth a go! Who knows I might even throw together a double p in 2020 if a suitable deal comes up.

Fender TB600 and Fender 800Pro. Both cracking amps, both fantastic value and two different amps but each eminently giggable. They share a similar power section but the TB has a classic vale pre front end, the 800Pro much more neutral with a three band semi-parametric eq. Both amps have features unique to each model - TB has overdrive, classic fender tone stack and a single sweepable mids channel, the 800Pro is designed as a clean/high headroom amp with fixed bass and treble controls (think Thunderfunk) with built in comp but both have a room balance which is like a global tilt eq to help manage dodgy stage/room etc. Both are heavier than a class d but at 14kg approx it’s no hardship to carry in a rack case or bag and dare I say it the heft is there. The 800pro can do1200w at 2ohm which makes me shudder at the power and headroom available if the grunt coming out of my 212 @4ohm is anything to go by. Just ask the poor neighbours! Super easy to dial in a usable tone and equally easy to fix errant noises/rattles/rumbles on the fly (within reason)! 800Pro pictured below. -

They may ask for proof of purchase😕 -
Vintage pick ups use formvar wire but once Fender sold to cbs in the 70’s a different wire was used in the winding of pick ups. It’s why you’ll see specific mention to the wire type especially in relation to 60’s wind. I’ve a Fender CS ‘59 hopefully coming my way soon (the pick up found in the Mike Dirnt sig basses) and I’ve a solderless harness here too so @mcnach you’re welcome to try it out. Gonna put it in the PBird and convert it back to a traditional p for a while just for fun. Also seen these over on TB with harness included! Ceramic 8 so I’d imagine quite the kick out of them. Working out about £115 before shipping and tax but voiced to sound vintage!

The MXR cables have been good. I’ve had fender ones fail twice but like you say had them replaced for free. my -
Exciting New Years Eve Gigs, What's Happening With Everyone?
krispn replied to Bluewine's topic in General Discussion
We're in our usual venue but doing an extended set due to the late license. Edinburgh gains about 250,00 temporary residents over New Year and Hogmanay celebrations (a few years back there were 400,000 visitors to the city for Hogmanay) but hopefully they'll not all be in the pub at out gig! Looking forward to it, got some new songs in the set we've been adding in and tightening up over the last few weeks and the set's are all quite lively! -
Yup there is context but it’s a general question.

It’s the cabs which are really drawing my attention too but again it’s touch to push the button

M6 as I think it’s just great as is. The graphic eq on the 9 would be nice but the 6 is a lot of amp. I have had both mine hooked up today and the 800 pro is such a good tweakable amp. I’ve been dialling it in to suit the jazz bolstering the lo mids bumping a little mids where the natural scoop is, bit of tone hammer to give some grit/edge. I couldn’t justify an m6 even at the bargain price especially when the 800 pro was about 2/3 cheaper. I put the feelers out to sell it locally but it’s going nowhere except to my gig on nye 😀

Gotta keep those Mesa shares viable 😀

I deserve it 😀

I suppose that might be the point...

I had a bet on that that joke would make it into the first 5 posts. Congratulation ...to you both

The difference at about one minute is huge - the low end is very noticeable or the drop off once he changes to the blue bass

What's the thought's on a person having multiple accounts on a forum. Is it all harmless fun, a social experiment, a way to play devils advocate etc. or do folk have other views on the topic? I can understand that the reasons to do so can be many and varied but I'm undecided on how I feel about it!

Where is it you big tease!

All right all right can all the haters form an orderly queue. There’ll be someone passing out seeeties if the queue gets to long but I really would like to meet each one of you personally and have a photo taken 🤣🤣🤣

I may have inadvertently said muddy in ace of not cutting through and have edited my earlier post.

All’s well that ends well 🙂

The Heston Blumenthal of Tone! Fair enough if it’s a failing of the pick up then there may be little you can do other than replace it. Would a regular pick up fit in the BB?

Honestly I'd be surprised if any advice/opinions that come up as a result of this thread or the one on TB offer any revelations. Having read numerous posts by you and had many a conversation with you in DM you already have the answers to this and many other questions. Right hand placement and technique, use of a pick, setting up the EQ on amp/multifx etc are all topics you've written about and offered advice to others on and could all be employed to help mitigate any issues. You've advocated for the 'essential three band eq' on some posts but say EQ wont help? You've advocated for HPF but don't currently have one in your live rig? The Yamaha mega thread repeatedly mentions the virtues of passive Yamaha BB's being aggressive and 'not a classic Fender P' sound yet here you are creating a thread about a BB *edit* not cutting through the mix The collective knowledge and wisdom shared across this forum only tells us one thing - we like what we like and that is prone to change on a whim. I wonder if the BB was so much more 'characterful' than your old bass but that character is now not what your want to hear out with the band? You have plenty of options so you'll be grand. Now for Gods sake tell us more about meaty crunch! It sounds like an oxymoron then I think of pork belly!
