  1. Be sure and try the JMJ!
  2. It does feel like there can be a misconception about lows and low end the boosting in is a good thing but it’s such a powerful thing. The singer and default sound man (I refer to him as a volume guy not sound guy for reasons which would be apparent in the room!!) and he will later in a gig start to nudge the bass into the sub in the regular venue we play and I’ve had a word that it ruins the sound. I’ve tried to suggest some more useful eq nudges that might ‘punch’ rather than swamp the bass/low end
  3. One of these will get you form the HX Stomp to the XLR input of your desk (see image below) A 1/4” instrument cable (1/4”>1-4”) from the Stomp ‘out’ to the 1/4” input on your desk will likely not cause you any issues. I’m not sure the benefits of using a 1/4” TRS>1/4”TRS or the potential pit falls but I’ve never tried one.
  4. What can I say I like to hear the band from time to time and enjoy a bit of volume.
  5. I didn’t mention getting lost in the mix or at least I don’t think I did? First rule of hearing yourself on the gig get a sound you like before putting in ear plugs make sure everyone can hear you and is getting what they need then pop in the ear plugs and carry on knowing that the band and stage sound is working. If things sound muddy with ear plugs pop them out every few songs for a listen. Considering the P bass has been the reference electric bass tone for decades it might be some other factors which are making it sound lost in the mix. Respect the low end, keep the mids where they need to be for your band and respect the mix! I’d be interested to know what way you get to your sound live. I know you prefer bass and amp and no effects on the gig other than drive from the amp. Are you getting your core tone set up with ear plugs in or playing a few numbers first to check how every is sounding? What’s other peoples routine for the first few tunes?
  6. I recently put some roundwounds back onto some of my basses and it nice to have that different tonality to the bass having been quite happy with and familiar with the flats. I do like flats and still have one bass with them but it’s been good to gig roundwounds- even if I did have the tone backed off by about 60% It’s worth swapping back and forth, or it is for anyway, me just to keep the tones fresh. I’m using a bit more grit for more songs just to mix it up and defo prefer the roundwounds with a touch of dirt over the flats.
  7. I’d imagine MK is pretty savvy about his gear. Let’s face it he’s likely as big a gear nerd as the rest of us. Just because he had the advantage of people seeking his name on their gear doesn’t mean it’s a bad thing
  8. Deflecting the point your honour! Yeah he probably did I’d say.
  9. Road trip? Maybe ashdown should hold a bass bash and have the masses descend 😀
  10. I just submitted my mix of a song for a UAD competition - it didn’t come across on the version I sent as well as I heard it in the daw but.... I had a lot of fun boosting some eq in the bleed of other mics rather than the primary mic used on some of the instruments. It’ll not win any Grammys but it was interesting to me to hear those ‘bleeds’ nudged to give a different quality over the actual close mics. It was a rushed mix but I’m defo gonna do more. Cheers!
  11. Isn’t that the whole point of a signature model? It’s brand awareness and a high profile user who influences people/fans to get onboard with the brand as much as their sig model. X player uses Y brand. It’s like my point the other day why make an active bass without a passive option? If a brand can produce a mid price model with this feature why not in their £1500+ model? Artists and their fripperies!
  12. Hi makes sense. I’m enjoying getting my head around mixing and sound and while I’m still figuring stuff out but it certainly corresponds to other stuff I’ve read/seen. Any good books on this you can recommend? General mixing and the like?
  13. Wanting a good sub bass sound but asking form a completely different perspective to the comprehensive description and viewpoint you just gave. 😀
  14. Bravo! I love a good sound engineer breakdown of getting a sound to sit/mix well.
  15. @Friskydingo check out the description of what the TH DI can offer in this thread linked below. It might help decide if a pedal based version has a few more options for what you need. I’ve not used the head version but I do like the pedal for the extra bit of color it can add to my amp or at amp shared gigs. I normally keep the AGS mode engaged and have it balanced volume wise to sit equall(ish) to the clean or just leave it on as the basic always on sound (AGS Engaged) when I’m wanting a bit more edge to the basic tone. It also works as a great clean preamp if that’s needed too - just be aware of the volume boost as it not ideal as a stomp box type effect to switch between AGS off and on. I think it been designed to be used as a clean pre or a ‘amp-like pre’ but not both on the same song!
  16. I’d genuinely have bought this already if I were after a 5 string- no qualms over the price, build quality or the seller! GLWTS fella!
  17. Ha looks like you bought it from Ed Friedland 😀
  18. Worth getting one in any colour!
  19. Of course ...which one though? And what about the squealing, over driven j bass sound
  20. This often comes up in threads with people saying the band noticed a tone or a sound but it’s often not clear if that was a good thing or a bad thing. Sometimes different is just different but when a whole band looks up that can be as much consternation as a confirmation that it works.
  21. Even if were noticeable I think most of us could excuse a slight different in active/passive sound over active sound/no sound
  22. I think a passive option should always be available on an active bass but I suppose on a Signature model the big name players usually have a tech to concern themselves with battery changes!
  23. haha I thought the same. Be a great bass for my country gig everything from Tic Tac to fat P!
  24. 😂 😂😂
  25. @Al Krow What was different about your set up for this gig? Were your volume levels different for this gig over and above a regular pub gig? Did you have pa support or a sound guy? Same cab as usual? Let the hive mind help problem solve!
