  1. i think thats the general opinion. i understand that laminates are less prone to feedback when amplified, although I have no proof as Ive only owned laminates myself.
  2. dont forget that if you intend to amplify said bass it may not have to sound world class acoustically. IMHO a laminate bass would suit your needs fine, where as a superior sounding solid built bass is necessary for orchestral work
  3. theres a shop in Beeston , Nottingham , cant remember name , that has a good reputation, or David Vernons in Manchester.
  4. Gumtree bass , a split there means stay away. Zeller basses , along with Antoni and the other Chinese basses already mentioned crop up on Ebay with neck breaks/splits etc enough times to make me think they musnt be made that well. Cant remember last time an Excelcior or Artia was up for sale with such damage, unless it had obviously been neglected. They are both Boosey Hawkes models Btw.
  5. Second hand basses will already have a set up done, you may want to change strings to suit, but you should get a better bass for your money . Boosey and Hawkes basses are a good place to start, far better build quality than new basses of today.

  10. our policy is nobody borrows anything and we dont lend anything either. weve turned down countless gigs that go " do you fancy a double bill with ???, oh but theve no Pa so can we use yours?" If you want Pa hire ring a company that does it. we fell for it on a private party where the result was £150 to get my Mesa fixed , and £200 to get the crossovers fixed due to the dj frying the speakers coz he was in the Pa also. Lesson learned..
  11. the TC tuner is great, guitar or bass mode, all you need
  12. "As replaceable as lawnmower parts" Or something like that , If I remember right...

  14. only ones that work with EUB are Eurosonics or Prestos, both ok for slappin, but a word of warning, the Rockabilly Police wont like an EUB .

  16. i have an artia excelcior that Was going ebay in new year. it has been refinished to a blonde oil stain, looks nice. when i got it the neck was painted black, which is currently back to bare wood. It has what looks like a new fingerboard, maybe rosewood, really smooth. i put a boxwood tailpiece on it to match the fingerboard and fitted a new bridge. it needs to go to fund other stuff. would like to see £450 for it. I think the Artia model is top of range Boosey and Hawkes, taking into account that the neck needs finishing I reckon thats a fair price pitch. if you want fotos let me know, merry xmas. BTW i am in manchesrer , but willing to meet.
  17. the afterlength affects tension also. Reduce the bridge to tail string length and tension reduces. There is a rule that says afterlength should be exactly one seventh of scale length . less break angle over the bridge also helps, think of fenders with through body stringing compared to a les paul..
  18. Unfortunatly my Jackson is nothing to brag about:)
  19. yeah I know ! Sometimes people have to move gear along to raise some cash for other stuff, thats why I thought it worth a shot on here
  20. Yep, Im just greedy..seriously looking though.
  21. I know its a very long shot but Basschat spreads far and wide! Im starting the search for a Kay upright preferably an M1, if any one has sighted such a beast in any shops, or is actually selling one please let me know. Im sure I will end up buying overeas but finding one here would be so much easier..
  22. The Tex Speed Combo @ the Bowling Green, Oldham. 27th Nov FREE ENTRY Kick Ass Rockabilly!
  23. i borrowed a acusound strip once and reasly didnt get on with it. piezos work best when under pressure from both sides of the pickup ie a wing slot type. The acusound is just stuck on there, it gave a very unfucussed amd unbalanced sound when i tried it. Also a very weak output, to the point where I thought it was broken! ( maybe it was). Try other pickups, IMO there are much better ones out there, and cheaper too.
