1.
Gigging bass guitarists who only play other people's songs have taken the easy way out compared to the home musician who is trying to compose his own music and master recording, IMO. Churning through a 12 bar blues or an AC/DC number is a piece of piss compared to the inner workings of a DAW.
+1 I did the covers/function type band thing for a couple of years while I was at Uni in the 90s as an easy way of making some extra cash. It was for me, in terms of playing, a piece of piss (we did soul/funk type stuff - the hardest thing I had to play was probably Stevie's 'I Wish'...) It was occasionally fun, but I wouldn't want to do it for the rest of my life and in fact I haven't since. I see loads of local musicians who are contemporaries of mine who used to write, record and play their own stuff, but now just do covers in pub bands. Personally, I see that as 'taking the easy option'.
 2. Gigging is a bit like sex... when it's good it's amazing, when it's bad... well, you get the idea... I love gigging under the right circumstances, but I don't have to do it to remain engaged and excited by music, because I love playing and recording too. I learned to play bass primarily as a creative outlet, not because I need to massage my ego onstage. Grinding through a set of covers in a grotty pub to a disinterested bunch of drunks on a Friday night is my idea of hell tbh.
 3. I'm going to have a go at this..I have a 'concept' in my head, not sure how it will work out but it will be interesting to write like this for a change, i.e. using a picture as inspiration and also within a fixed time period.
 4. 3 but I only really play 2 of them regularly - a Dingwall ABZ5 and a Tune Maniac piezo fretless. The other is my KGB headless which was build for me in 1991 and was my only bass for about 15 years. I'll probably never sell it...

 8.
Practise and more practise. Remember, bass players do it standing up with a strap-on...
I prefer a nice thick one myself. Fnarr fnarr, yuk yuk etc....

 21. The early 80s post-punk period was pretty ace, but that might just be because I was 14 in 1980 and going to loads of great gigs in Liverpool, so I'm kind of biased I guess. All that NWOBHM stuff was bloody awful though, as were all those dire cliché ridden American poodle rock bands. The charts did seem to be more eclectic then though, which was generally a good thing. I think Live Aid killed the traditional music industry as was, that and the introduction of CDs, which gave the industry an opportunity to endlessly re-package everything instead of focussing on new talent. I don't personally think it has ever or will ever recover, which is possibly why my own tastes have drifted further towards left-field and world music. Or is that just what happens when you get older? I dunno...
