1. i think the PF 500 will have that ampeg sound, but im sure purists will tell you its nothing like the valve driven tone of a classic SVT. I preamp mine with a dave hall valve pedal and im pretty happy with the sound now.
2. sounds faulty to me! Never had that with my PF 500 with gain and volume at 2 o'clock or higher, send it back, heard some units are faulty.
3. thanks for the tip, off to homebase!
4.
If the OP is determined to buy new and doesn't yet know enough about guitars to be able to pick out a good one from a range of less good instruments, then IMO the Yamaha would be the safest bet. Has anyone ever come across a duff new Yamaha guitar or bass?
nope!
5. 6.
never realised how much each amp has its own sound until i got my Ampeg and then heard Geddy coming out my speakers (in tone, regretfully not in technique!)
ha ha just realised what i said...

9. [sub]Good Review, I have the same and had problems getting the sound i want, but found cranking the bass right up with some mids into 2 1x15's gives me almost the sound im after. Never having owned an ampeg before i was really surprised at how definative the "ampeg" sound is, but ive got used to it and rather like it! Dont rate the compressor much so i use a markbass compressore and one of Dave Halls valve pre amp pedals. I keep mine in a laptop bag which it fits perfectly.[/sub]
10. good for a polish, bit greasy mind..ooeer missus.

16.
If I saw a grown up playing that I wouldn't like it. Midget, dwarf or disabled child I still don't like it. Making my toes curl. And not in a good way.
as opposed the the "jesters shoes" good way?
17. i think for an eleven year old, he's an incredible talent, once the flashy "look at me" stuff wears thin I imagine he'll grow into an amazing musician.

19. ok so he may have some effects on his bass (not sure on that one) but here's a great example of 3 guys playing where the drums and bass create a groove and space for the guitarist without the need for anything fancy (check out the guitar solo part at 2.00 minutes), Im sure there loads better examples but this one came to mind first! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U7DFsBcVMDA
20. gotta say i just concentrate on getting in the groove and being as tight as possible with the drummer while the guitarist strokes his pe*is, sorry his ego with the solos. Too many effects just make a mess IMO. Saying that a little compression helps.
21. ta for that, now watching!
22. thanks guys, lots of good choices, especially like the primal scream stuff, very dancey yet rocky (just watched the sreamadelica making of as well!) Chilli peppers also tick right boxes. Anyone do rocked up versions of disco numbers?
