1. As above, at the minute I'm using masking tape and a marker pen but there are little white spaces on each channel for writing on I assume but I don't want to permanently mark them.
2. I didn't play for 14 years. When I dug everything out for my first rehearsal after that break everything worked.
3.
for example moving from low G to the octave on the A string (without looking) is occasionally hit and miss.
Totally agree about looking out and connecting with your audience but for the above manoeuvre a glance to make sure it lands is perfectly acceptable. In fact if you just looked out and NEVER looked at your bass I think you'd look a bit creepy
4. Take the knobs off now before you screw it up
5. Bought this little beauty for 55 quid. Short scale Jim Deacon p bass, older model with the Fender headstock. Tried it at a rehearsal and was really pleased, band liked it too. Frets were a bit sharp so got the file out, much better. Decided that as it was a bargain I had to throw money at it even though it was fine as it was. Chucked a Gotoh Hi mass bridge on it and a KiOgon wiring loom. Output was way, way up on the cheap loom that was in it. Gigged it on Saturday and it was fab. Next to go in tonight were Entwistle PBXN pickups and some knobs like my Mustang has. Here it is on the operating table. My toolbox has been raped so the Leatherman has been recruited and was perfect. Wine is an excellent Campo Viejo Rioja and sponge is a xmas Arse/Face present as the Entwistles come with screws but no foam or springs so used the old springs and my Arse/Face sponge. Pickups work but it's too late to crank it up and hear what they sound like. Next is a D tuner and some light weight tuners. and I also need to decide what decal I'm putting on the headstock. I have to say I'm very pleased and looking forward to rehearsal tomorrow. Les

Decals

Thanks mate
7. Want to put a decal on my p copy, "Feckin Copy Bass" kinda thing but would like to preview my design before I order. Does anyone know a site where you can bang your design in and see it previewed before you pull the trigger ? I'm convinced there was one but I've searched and searched and can't find any this time when I actually need one. Ta Les
8. We've just been asked back to Styal beer festival for the third year running which is nice.
9. Bought a p bass harness over the weekend, delivered Tuesday, Great bit of kit. Thanks John
10.
The best crowds are at the pubs that have a good live music following. A lot of pubs just have music on as an afterthought because it's just something that pubs do these days and as a result never pull in a good crowd. The band is responsible for entertaining the people that are already there!
Totally nailed by Truckstop
11. I'm gonna buy it off you for a fiver on ebay Karl
12. 1 bass, plectrum, fingers, tone control and move hand about. 2756 different bass sounds.
13. I think any subdivisions would be a major hassle for the mods. I'd like to see the price of the item in the headline, that would be enough for me.
14. Yes, very much a useful tool, just like tab is. Not always correct but many a time point you in the right direction.
15.
It didn't sound perfect but was loud enough and had enough bottom end to finish the gig.
That's the spirit It would have to be a catastrophic tech issue for me to have set everything up and then go home without my money.
16. I'm not sure what they would be classed as but going off the 15" version we had I would say they'd struggle with kick at any worthwhile volume.
17. We had the Hysis 2's, similar to yours but with a 15. I liked them to be honest but we used them with bins. Moved on to EV's and only got 80 quid for them on ebay Do some research on second hand prices, 300 feels a bit steep.
18.
What about a completely dead bass player?
I'm sure they'd just carry on without me.
19. It's never happened to me. The only thing I could think of that would stop the gig is a completely dead desk. Anything else I'm sure I could get round.
20. New baby. I've waited a long time for a Jim Deacon/SX p-bass shorty with the fender headstock to come up.
21. There will be no issues. Buy it and gig it. My 79 Stingray and my 68 Mustang have been, and are, gigged regularly and have never had a problem, In fact I've never had a failure with any bass on a gig or seen someone else have a failure come to think about it.
22.
It gets a bit difficult when the dep tells you how much he'll play for... but in principle I don't like the idea of a dep getting more than core members so if the gig is a good payer, then they get 'wages' not a split... It tends to work both ways, sometimes in our favour, sometimes not, but hopefully you come out just ahead..
I take your point but we have never been in the position of having a dep tell us the fee he requires. We have 3 guitarist to call on and 4 drummers. All are either ex band members or friends so an all round sense of fairness pervades and we haven't had a money problem with any of them. Les
23.
Do you pay the dep more on the gig as well or less..?? as that could mean a dep earns more than a core member pro rata..??
Dep will get an equal split or a minimum of 50 quid, If rehearsal costs (we don't always rehearse with the dep before hand) have to come out of that gig money we take that on the chin between the 3 of us. So yes. now and then the dep will get more than the core members (not much to be honest) but we accept that as we have a very good reputation and virtually never have to pull a gig.
24. Band pays the rehearsal fees, comes out of the gig money. Deps however, and we use a few, are not expected to contribute to rehearsal costs.
25. We only rehearse when we have to so just use what ever is in the rehearsal studio. Guitarist usually brings his amp though. Les
