1. I use myspace for my bands and I have a personal page. Same for our guitarist. Our drummer and keyboard player both use their facebook pages for their personal stuff. Our singer doesn't have a myspace or facebook page. You're not going to get any new fans from myspace. What it is good for is basically acting as a one page press kit. That's handy when it comes to booking gigs and even finding members.
2. Shipping was pretty low. I had a quote for two cabs - can't remember what it came to. I remember working out that I could get a Dr Bass 2x10 and 1x15 + 22.5% Customs/VAT + shipping from the US and it would work out at around the same price as the Hartke 2.5XL and 115XL I'd just bought. When I say cheap, they are CHEAP. $280 = less than £150. That's still under £250-300 with shipping and tax added. So £5-600 for 2 lightweight cabs. Less than the cost of one cab with the Epifani or Eden badge on it. You see why I'm tempted?
3. Hmm... I find it easier to slap on a bass with a medium-high action. I find it almost impossible on a bass with a low action (it just sounds sloppy). But then it's exactly as MB said, whatever works for you. The things to think about are really: 1. How bright do you want your strings 2. How thick/heavy do you want your strings I prefer the thicker/heavier and less bright strings for slap 'cos that's the sound and feel I'm after. What kind of sound/feel are you after?
4. That sounds interesting. The only reason I say I'm not after one is that I don't use a fuzz pedal. But I do love these forums - you learn something new everyday. Thanks for explaining this to me.
5. I did contact the guy in charge a while ago and he was quite helpful. It does seem like there's a team of basically 1 or 2 people building them. That means quality control ought to be fantastic but that it might be a long wait. I don't mind waiting a long-ish amount of time so long as I get something that does everything I wanted it for. What was it on TB that put you off? Were people grumbling basically about the long wait or were there other problems?
6. What do you guys think of Time Out? I don't have any strong feelings about it either way... except for when my band's listed in it. Then I think it's the greatest magazine in the world. So far 3 of our 5 gigs in this band have been listed in Time Out. Doesn't mean much except that when I tell friends, family or people at work that I've got a band and that we've got a show coming up, they take it a bit more seriously when I can point to it in Time Out. Share, people, share.
7. Chords. Yum. With an ERB you can cover the roles of bass, keys and guitar in one instrument. Amazing. You should consider copping a lot of ideas about various chord voicings and things from keys players and guitarists.
8. So, we're agreed? 1. If you can 'feel' it, you won't be counting it. 2. If you can't 'feel' it, you have to count it. 3. If you have to count it, you count with the accent/drop/kick on the 3. 4. The reason you count it so that the accent is on the 3 is that we have passed a resolution on these bass forums declaring so.
9. Ah, gotcha. Thanks for that. A few of my pedals have a -6dB pad for active basses. The pedal sounds useful but it's not for me. Good luck.
10. Can someone explain to me what the point of this unit is?
11. I have to say actually that the one time I ventured to their East London branch, it was not very good. The West London branch on the other hand is always fantastic.
12. On my Fenders I use Ernie Ball Hybrid Slinky strings (the green packet). I don't like too much zing but if the G is dull, it just won't pop as it should. But I really hate a harsh, trebly sound.
13. Hi guys I'm intrigued by Dr Bass cabs. They're light and cheap, and they have decent reviews on those American forums. I was just wondering if anyone here has any actual experience of them. Thanks
14. What kind of slap sound are you after? I use 45s but some people use really light sets. I do like the Warwick strings.
15. Those 2 expensive ones you found look fantastic. 400 Euros is a lot of money though!
16. I've got a Comfort Strapp and a little blue suede Levy's thing. They're both fine. I'm always up for a better strap or stand though.
17. Quick reminder that we are on tomorrow. 1 drink on me for every forumite who comes down.
18. Digital Village are great. The West London branch in particular.
19. I'll come along to your gig if you come along to my gig at The Water Rats the next day. Fair?
20. I think he gets more of a kick out comparing different combinations of gear than just collecting it all. He sells on a lot of stuff that doesn't make the grade. It could be that he's just on the most epic tonequest the world has ever seen.
21.
Sometimes the less time you have the more energy you put into it and the more you enjoy it when it happens.
Spot on. I'd say take the promotion but do have a proper chat with the keyboard player to make sure you don't get chucked because of it. If you're the best bass player he's played with, then he can afford to be a bit more flexible. My band consists of a lawyer, a civil servant, a teacher, a graphic designer and a schoolboy. It's difficult to organise things around the band's other commitments but it hasn't stopped us progressing fairly quickly on the London launchpad circuit.
22. My drummer's playing there in some youth orchestra and my former guitarist will be playing there too. Bugger.
23. Just think... 48V phantom-powered on-board bass preamps.
