1. I was just thinking that it could be a laugh if we tried to put on a basschat gig or mini-festival featuring the various bands whose bassists are forum members. So, vote in the poll: good or bad idea?
2. Bloody hell. Why not just lie some more and call it an electro-acoustic?
3. Hang onto it! The 70s bridge pickup placement sounds fat - excuse the 90s slang.
4. I bought an Aguilar DB680 secondhand from the US. The amp tech just had to flick a swtich inside and change the fuse.
5. I got called a 'gear slut' after a gig at the weekend. I think it was meant as a compliment.
6. That would really sort me out. It looks so much smaller than the Stompjuice too. I do like the look of the hefty Stompjuice but I'd appreciate being able to downsize to a smaller pedalbaord and if it means I can have my effects and DI out of the back of my pre, I'll be a very happy man.
7. That's cool man. A lot of people from these forums playing cool venues.
8. If Neve can do it, why not dood? It'd be cool if you could stick a crossover or something in after the preamp but before the compressor and then follow that with a parametric EQ. Hmm...
9. £250? That's a bargain. Well done. Hang onto it and put an Aguilar preamp in there and then use all four knobs, as someone else said above.
10.
Keep a diary of all your gigs and that way you can keep a track of all your shows.
Damn straight. Let me know when the nameless funk band gets gig-ready - we'll have to share the bill somewhere.
11. Interesting article about the NS10s here
12. Yeah, I'd say just buy some shorter screws. We've got a good place near us called Clerkenwell Screws. You just turn up with the screws in your hand and they can immediately tell you what model they are. I reckon all specialist screw merchants (that sounds so wrong) would be able to help you out.
13.
Get some NS-10's!! (there's a myth attached to that, that circles the engineer fraternity.. right up there with beyer' DT100's) Actually, yes the obvious would be Hifi speakers! I have been monitoring on Mission floor standers for years and never realised! I'm just so used to the sound of them and compare recordings with CDs using them. a sort of psuedo mastering, if you will.
I'd recommend Studiospares Classic 10s which are a clone of the Yamaha NS-10s. I was looking at using some hi-fi speakers but it turned out these were cheaper. (I now have two sets - one for the control room and one for the live room). I power them off a Marantz stereo power amp (with two sets of speakers outs - one for the live room, one for the control room ).
My guitarist recorded his whole album using the big Behringer active monitors. The record label left it as it was, save for a small amount of finalisation as far as I can tell.
The trouble with these (I have them) is that they're a bit bass heavy, so when you take your mix to another system it suddenly sounds thin and weak. They also work out at around the same price as the Marantz and the Classic 10s combined. They're still not bad though, especially if you've got a great pair of ears on you.
14. Hmm... I'm wary about not taking my own rig to things. Do you DI out of the back of the Thunderfunk?
15. Slaphappy - I haven't had the opportunity to try out any of the valve Drawmer compressors. I've got a solid state one in my rack (Drawmer DL241). I'm fairly new to compressors so I can't really compare but it sounds good to my ears. I think it's going to take me a good few weeks more to get it exactly how (and where) I want it though. Dood - what pre are you using now, if you don't mind my asking? You could probably ditch it if you get a good channel strip, as SHG said.
16. Could just be that he moved the knob from one place to another. Weird. Not really a problem but like other people have said, it could work out as being quite handy if/when you upgrade the electronics. Lovely looking instrument btw (apart from the hole). Congrats.
17. The comparison guide on the Diago page is quite useful. I have a Rothwell Stompjuice for 6 of my pedals and a 12V computer power adaptor for my DHA Dual Custom. It all sounds great until I try to take a DI signal out of the back of my preamp - ground loop! There's no ground loop out of the DI in my pedalboard but it is frustrating. I'm wondering whether something like the Diago would kill the hum. Hmm...
18. Yeah, it's very frustrating. I think a decent 1U channel strip would probably strike the best balance between price and quality. Would the EQ/Compressor go between your pre and power amp?
19. There's an SWR Baby Blue for sale in the For Sale section. I'd grab that if I were you.
20. Which tube stop is it exactly? I'll be down for that.
21. Have to? Get to speak to the stage manager/sound engineer directly. I'm sure they'll understand once you explain about your rig.
22. Errr, I wasn't really thinking about any particular style. When you approach any new style just try to get the rhythmic feel of it right first. The 12 notes are all the same in any style. What kind of things do you want to play? I could suggest some tunes then.
23. I'm pretty sure Simone has left the Bass Cellar. She was the only knowledgeable and helpful person there. Just go to The Gallery. They have some good secondhand stuff - they might give you a slight discount if you ask nicely.
24. Around £10,000? Why does all the great kit have to be so expensive? I'd love to try out the Drawmer valve multi-band compressor above.
