1. Isn't that the point? Surely that's exactly where you'd want to bury such a sound? Is that the standard tuning/set-up from the factory?
2. Tuning wise, we seem spread over B, C and D for the majority of numbers. I've yet to use the G string (so to speak), it just doesn't seem that we're ever going so high - or at least nothing I can't replicate up the fretboard on a lower string. That Chris Revill video is an odd one. I think it would work in context (i.e. hid beneath three guitars and someone doing piq squeals) but it's never going to win fans as a solo effort. I have a project bass, which I'm lazily piecing back together - hence the resurgence in my thoughts of this. I have a nice MTD 5'er, but it's a little too nice for some occasions, hence the wondering if I could string this bass in suitable fashion to hit the low notes. Retuning my current 4'ers sees the tuning shift a little too much if I put too much attack in. Sounds like a BEAD stringing might sort some of that, with minimal fuss. Appreciate it will be a novelty/not for everyone, but sounds like it would work - and has worked for others. Great comments on here, have enjoyed poring through them - thanks all
3. ... Do this without any "crikey, I didn't intend that" style consequences. Apart from adapting the nut, would the neck/tension be the only issue? Does anyone already do this? The rationale behind my thoughts being that the heavier gauge B would stand up better to playing attack than taking the E down - I'm tuning down, but finding the tuning wandering a little. So, would using the lowest four strings from a 5 string set be a reasonable solution? This could be silly, but asking is one of the most direct ways to learn
4. Can you airbrush me, please, Peds.
5. Can you airbrush me, please, Peds.
6. I think, if faced with a chapter and verse analysis of my recent on-stage performances, if handled without the appropriate care then I think I'd be inclined to possibly apply my forehead to the bridge of the offender. This would especially apply should the scent of smugness hang in the air. To be honest, I mainly follow Tim's approach - enjoy! I like seeing people trying new tricks, seeing what I can pick up along the way or wondering about how I might have done it. I like seeing what gear people are playing. I'm not sure I'd immediately feed any of it back to someone with the adrenaline still in their veins, however constructively intended: "Hi, yeah, I saw your show. I'm the bassist for the last band. I thought you were well off the beat today. Your tone was flat and your gear looks sha... what, something I said?"
7. I think I'd bear the burden if I could lay hands on a Gibbo Artist! But, in summary, f***ed back is f***ed
8. I love my Lakland DJ5 Jazz... but it is trying to kill me under the weight. I've gone from being a prop and being able to carry people without blinking, to now grumbling over the odd pound on the Lakland. Oh how the might have fallen! Which assumes I was mighty, but hey ho... I also love my MTD. I just worry that it makes me sound a complete twat - it's almost a little too good for me. I see some nice vids of people on Youtube hitting the soul and jazz, with some bright clean sounds, all pop and hustle. And then you have me, wishing I was in Eyehategod, and probably sullying the whole thing by my presence.
9. If you love the playability, etc, then our opinions are moot at this stage Glad you've got something you like.
10. I'll join Warickhunt, in my surprise at how busy it is! You do a bloody good job with it, leaving me a little envious. I think I might have sodded off down the path of least resistance upon facing that!
11. Welcome to the site, hhoward. Any thoughts on the cricket? Ponting being gobby on telly, but can't help but feel he's not the guy to get your lot playing again.
12. +1 to the above.
13. We'd leave our rehearsals bloody and ragged, on this form! Well, the guitarist would...
14. Yeah, ditto - surprised this hasn't shifted now. Could be it needs to go on Ebay, as it's looking lucrative on there!
15. The G&L looks stunning. Have you considered an MTD Kingston Heir, or similiar? I have one, and rate it very highly!
16. I saw this bass in person, the other week - it's a really stunning example, and Mark is a pleasure to do business with. Bump!
17. Within the industry they have a poor reputation. Small provider, of limited ability and coverage.
18. This has been quite some conversion, since I'm sure it was Wazoo who was crying out the virtues of the Big Al when it first arrived - though I'll happily stand corrected if that transpires to have been another user. That's something you should well take some credit from, Sheldon, in seeing your product compete in such circles. I think it's still a way out of my league, in terms of playing styles. I remain too much of a luddite for any such finesse, but it's been a great little discussion to read through
19. Chief, that looks absolutely stunning!
20. Had Mark's old amp off him, assumedly to make space for the above. Makes a good brew, and even let me play with his Spectors! Smashing fella, would recommend him to anyone on here
21. Obviously, Lys has never stuck his dick in a hot pizza Even when it's good it's hot cheese?
22.
y true. However, most players don't seem to grasp the concept of playing in keys that aren't E minor. Although,in fairness, there are a lot of finger and pick players who have the same problem.
Get the f*** out of town?! There are other keys? I suppose it's a bit like the old joke of Slipknot basslines being written in binary. I have slapped, where appropriate - there's certainly one RATM cover, where I did a passable turn - but I can empathise with the OP. There's a lot of Saturday afternoon thumb going on, where it's more akin to fretw***ery than musicality. Every one in the shop, who didn't see your flawless technique, is pretty much convinced you dropped the bass; now can I have a go, please?
23. Truckstop, what a legend!
24. That red ProBass is lush. Now if only I hadn't blown all my money on presents/turkey/beer/wine/new amp/new Jackson/more beer, I could have a stab, having been a good boy this year. Sigh.
25. Bump for this. Smashing guy, and this is exactly the rig I was looking for - if you're on the South Coast I'd and looking to take your volume up a notch, then I'd recommend dropping Craig a line.
