I think it's Charlie Hunter... there's not too many people who play those things.
It's not Charlie. I can play one of those things look at my avatar (well did, before I had to sell it so I could stay at uni! )

I quite like Matt Garrison's take on the bass line on Herbie Hancock's Future2Future DVD.

As always, I would say the best value for money and sounding fretless 5 is the Ibanez GWB35. A bit more than what you are looking for, but worth it.
-
Recently!? Cause they don't seen to know anything about it.
-
Just to clarify. The original signature model was the GWB1 and GWB2 (Which you could get in fretted, which I still want!!). These basses had ebony boards and ramps that attached with tape. Then the GWB2 was discontinued. They then brought out the GWB35 as a budget model with ebonal board. Then the GWB1 was replaced with the GWB105 which also had an ebonal board and now a ramp which attaches with screws. The 105 was the old "top of the range" and was discontinued when they moved the build to a japanese master builder, and it became the 1005. Although this meant that there was a dramatic increase in price. The 105 has a matching ash headstock and the 1005 has a black headstock. Although I believe the bartolini electronics are the same!?

Cheapest I've seen for one new in UK: GWB35 I have one and love it, I wish I could get an off the shelf fretted to match!
amazing player, knows his sh*t...likes a good chat.
Ha he definitely likes a good chat!! And he definitely knows his sh*t. He teaches at Birmingham Conservatoire, but I believe he teaches at a few other places. Not sure where, I can find out though. He has a solo bass/guitar gig coming up on the 20th of may at Gumbles, (The Surgery Crabbery Street Stafford ST16 2BA).

Finally! My teacher gets a few videos up! Fred plays wonderful bass and guitar. Please leave some nice comments, as I have been bugging him for ages to get some videos up. Like it says, just a bit of fun: Ya Ya for Shwa - Solo Bass Celtic Landscapes - Solo Bass And a bit of his guitar work, incase you are that way inclined: Looking For Autumn - Guitar Something in 6/8 - Guitar

Best place to study jazz bass in the UK?
You end up being a photocopy of a photocopy.
Only if you let it, and unfortunately, maybe people do. -
I've said about this before as my old bad wanted to do it. I learned the song but THAT run was beyond me, i had the notes in the right order, but definately, definately, not the right speed, although, for a laugh I tried playing it recently now I use the 3/4 finger technique a bit and it sounds quite mad! I would love to play this live. Was it Greg Phillanges (sp?) on keys?

My favourite (Apart from the classic School Days), is the Vertu album from about 2000.
-
It's all about Juan Nelson. I had to learn this when I was teaching a guy years ago as he "HAD" to know it and couldn't work it out by himself. Lovely, lovely bass part.

The funkiest groove I have seen on YouTube for a while
How so Mikey?
Awful bass tone, but this may have been to with the sound engineer. And he was actually very sloppy. Not in a cool loose, kind of way, just sloppy. Also, if you listen to any of her earlier live recordings the bass is more articulate and sits nicer in the groove. Saying that, he looked like he was enjoying himself. I was too busy checking out Jill anyway to be fair. -
I had a quick go on Dominique Dipiazza's 5 which was 33" and that was excellent. He seems to make it ok.
I have the Jill Scott live (2001?) CD with Terry Tribett on bass. I was very impressed with him!
Fat Bak Taffy!!! Yeah if it is the 826+ album it's 2001. The Tribetts generally run ting! His brother Eric is a monster drummer.
And a personal favourite of mine, Dwayne Wright: DW 1. DW 2. DW 3. DW 4.
I saw him with Jill Scott and really wasn't impressed with playing or sound...but he's definately better in those vids. -
Man, it just makes me wish i was better* with a bow! *Or even able to use it properly at all!
Actually, I was disappointed by this now I have seen it. Seeing someone play someone elses solo, even in this manner, is no more exciting than any other 'set piece'.
Exactly how I feel about classical musicians sometimes!
I haven't heard Mikey's version (I will try to later) so cannot comment on it but I know I struggle with them and, every time the tune gets called, I regret not having worked harder or longer on them. I guess that may be one of the reasons why I play jazz in small pubs in East Anglia not in The Barbican!
I don't really have a version anywhere. I did a video a while ago how to play cells through it and one on my old 8 string after playing for a couple of months. But when I get back to brum I will try and do one for some critisicm/comments as I have been working on somethings that make it, "a little" easier to play on it. Unless you meant you haven't seen that video up there yet...I don't think I will ever get to that standard. On piano anyway!
a/I admire his skill. b/But the tune? Call me ignorant/arogant or whatever, but I genuinely don't believe there is anyone who likes that music. Its all just an act and conspiracy to become accepted amongst the middle classes. c/But the guys got talent. And a lot of time on his hands I would expect. He should spend his time doing something constructive though. Like composing something good. Or curing cancer.
I have to agree with you on a and c, but b...I do actually like the tune, a lot. It's actually one of my favourite albums, but to each their own.
To all you guys who play a 6 string (or 7) - why do you like the extra string(s)?
After soley using a 6 string for years, I have switched to 5 strings, purely because the low B didn't get a lot of use. I have a fretted and fretless both strung with a high c. Do I use that high c a lot!? Honestly, not really for what you might see as traditional bass work. It tends to get used in my own music for playing chords and when I'm playing changes I like having the C. I personally don't have a problem with anyone using a bass with any number of strings, as long as they use them well.
