It would be interesting to let you have a go on my Pentabuzz sometime and see if you still hold that opinion , however even a used PB is a little out of the quoted budget. Still excellent value if you can snag one for less than £800. I would agree with BigRedx, the construction and I would add that design of a fretless is even more critical because a good fretless sound relies that much more heavily on sustain and good, rigid construction.
I would love to, that bass (but in an ocean blue i think) was the bass I wanted most when I first started learning. To this day I still haven't played one.

Before I got my PJB suitcase, I used to use one of these: Works fine.

It is more of a guitar hybrid. They tend to be tuned E A D for bass and a d g b e for the guitar strings. I used to own a Wes Lambe until early this year when I had to unfortunately sell it to fund myself through university. But i would recommend his work over novax as the build quality is excellent and at a much cheaper price. I know as soon as I get some money again, I will be ordering another one. I made a couple of videos in the short space of time I had mine (a bit ropey, but that's what you get when you don't practice much) Chank - John Scofield Giant Steps This is the thread about the guy on jools holland: Ken Pendergast If you want to see someone who has a bit more chops on it, check out charlie hunter on youtube or his website.

My mate got quite a nice teaching contract out of it that I showed him...nothing for me though!

If so: Have you got much work out of it? Joined a great band because of it? If it is worth it I may sign up, but there is only one advert I am interested in.
The point wasn't to say that I would practise swing to that beat at all and I don't believe I said that anywhere! Perhaps I didn't express myself very well. All I said was that I could play it that way. My actual point though was more that a rhythm that is simple, straight (using that term in it's loosest sense) and little more than metronomic only serves as the foundation for what you hear/feel/play. For a very simple example. I could take that beat and play the bass part from Spirit in the Sky and still get the bouncy feel of the original. My drummer friend didn't accept that you can achieve that feel without having all the other rhythmic parts in place. I accept that you aren't going to duplicate the overall feel precisely without duplicating all the contributing parts precisely, but his contention was more that, without them, it's just a beat and someone playing one note per beat on top of it. Have to say Mikey, your response was borderline close to the kind of response that my drummer friend would come up with. Looking a bit to much at the technicalities of it and missing the actual, far more conceptual, point.
Must be a misunderstanding then, because going by the title and the post "What caused it all was that I said I can listen to a click track playing four beats to the bar or even a simple drum part - eg kick on 1&3, snare 2&4, ride bell on each beat - and play along, quarter notes, and hear/feel the groove swing." etc I thought you were talking swing. Had you said something along the lines of your 2nd and 3rd sentence in this post, I don't think there would have been any argument/misunderstanding from me.
If I put a metronome on a back beat and play walking bass with it, it sounds like it's (the metronome) swinging, so I know exactly what you're talking about. No you are not mad.
Exactly, but i think the point is having what is seen as basically a simple rock groove in 4 on the drum machine, while walking along. I know any of my tutors would have words of advice for me if that is how I practiced.
A few years back I was having a conversation with a drummer friend of mine who is annoyingly good for his age, but whose chops have come primarily through formal education and loads of theoretical practice. As good a drummer as he can be, some of the more intangible aspects of performing (in contrast to simply playing) can get him wound up. During this conversation one of these aspects came up and it has bugged me ever since to know whether I was off the mark or talking sense and, if I was making sense, is it a bass player thing that other's just don't get or rather something he just couldn't get. What caused it all was that I said I can listen to a click track playing four beats to the bar or even a simple drum part - eg kick on 1&3, snare 2&4, ride bell on each beat - and play along, quarter notes, and hear/feel the groove swing. He was utterly baffled by this. Am I mad?
It's a fair comment that you can feel the swing in that pattern, but If that is how I was to practice swing, I would go mad. Maybe he was wondering (as I am) that you wouldn't typically play jazz with that feel, so why would you practice it with that feel!? The emphasis is on 2 and 4, thus it is better to practice with the metronome/drum machine sound/whatever on those beats.

Bump, for anyone who has seen a GWB1/2/105 for sale in UK!

They come up on ebay quite frequently aswell, for a lot less. Maybe worth waiting and keeping an eye out.
From the Sei site (damn frames making linking difficult): Custom, Jazz shape 8 string bass/guitar built for Pino Palladino consisting of 3 bass strings E A D and 5 guitar A D G B E, fully midi compatible, custom made Kent Armstrong pickups buckeye burl facing fan frets to give different scale lengths 25" on guitar side 28" on the bass side, reso acoustic saddles give the steel string guitar sound
I wonder if Pino got the bug after playing with John Mayer who has been known to play a novax!? If I'm honest, it is stunning, it looks too much like a bass for me. I quite like the look with the separate pickups on other 8s (although, at first I hated this as it looked messy)

The bassist/guitarist is Ken Pendergast. What a dude!
Fair enough... I'd based it on the fact he was playing it through a leslie simulator, which is kind of a Charlie Hunter trademark. How much did yours set you back?
Yeah, I was going to say though, he definitely likes Charlie, trying to get that organ sound. (I had a rotosphere aswell...I think all 8 stringers try it) I actually found it "used" on craigslist in Los Angeles when searching for more info on them, I paid £1100 including shipping and tax etc. But it was mint, like it hadn't been out of the case. Unfortunately, I couldn't dedicate too much time to it as studying bass was/is my priority. Think the quotes I had from Wes were about $2400 for a custom build.
Thanks for identifying it - that looks like an astonishing instrument. My son, who is the proper muso in this house, is having a serious attack of 'I'd love to get my hands on one of those'
If he is serious, I recommend checking out Wes Lambe Guitars. I had one of his 8's. They are a lot cheaper than novax, and in my opinion, nicer looking and the build quality is something else. Man, this thread makes we want my 8 String back! Also, CH now uses Tragott guitars and plays a 7 string, not 8.
I think it's Charlie Hunter... there's not too many people who play those things.
It's not Charlie. I can play one of those things look at my avatar (well did, before I had to sell it so I could stay at uni! )

I quite like Matt Garrison's take on the bass line on Herbie Hancock's Future2Future DVD.

As always, I would say the best value for money and sounding fretless 5 is the Ibanez GWB35. A bit more than what you are looking for, but worth it.
-
Recently!? Cause they don't seen to know anything about it.
-
Just to clarify. The original signature model was the GWB1 and GWB2 (Which you could get in fretted, which I still want!!). These basses had ebony boards and ramps that attached with tape. Then the GWB2 was discontinued. They then brought out the GWB35 as a budget model with ebonal board. Then the GWB1 was replaced with the GWB105 which also had an ebonal board and now a ramp which attaches with screws. The 105 was the old "top of the range" and was discontinued when they moved the build to a japanese master builder, and it became the 1005. Although this meant that there was a dramatic increase in price. The 105 has a matching ash headstock and the 1005 has a black headstock. Although I believe the bartolini electronics are the same!?

Cheapest I've seen for one new in UK: GWB35 I have one and love it, I wish I could get an off the shelf fretted to match!
amazing player, knows his sh*t...likes a good chat.
Ha he definitely likes a good chat!! And he definitely knows his sh*t. He teaches at Birmingham Conservatoire, but I believe he teaches at a few other places. Not sure where, I can find out though. He has a solo bass/guitar gig coming up on the 20th of may at Gumbles, (The Surgery Crabbery Street Stafford ST16 2BA).

Finally! My teacher gets a few videos up! Fred plays wonderful bass and guitar. Please leave some nice comments, as I have been bugging him for ages to get some videos up.
