We also have to pay tax out of out earnings, most semi pros don’t.
Do we!? Only joking, but I do wonder how many do claim the income. Both pros and semi-pros.

I forgot, two of my favourites! Citta Violeta - Ennio Morricone Deathwish - herbie Hancock

To go along with my Sky music rant, I have one more that relates to music...playing it live to be precise. "Semi-professionals" who seriously undermine and devalue live music by playing gigs (I'm predominantly talking function type gigs or background music etc, not originals) for £20-£30 each as of course they can afford to do this as they are well paid in their careers. I did a gig the other week and the bar manager says he can get a 6 piece for the money we did as a trio (£150) £50 each for 1h 30 mins straight through, which should have been two 45 min sets (never mind the cost of getting to and from the gig) and they are ""much better". Well, everyone I played with knows that isn't true, they aren't "much better" because they can't really play very well, but yes they have amazing gear, but this is about it when it comes to their set. It's hard enough making it as a working musician, but to be expected to do a gig for £15 and a meal is a joke to be honest. Does this bother anyone else? Are you somebody that does this? Is it actually just bar managers that are idiots!? Generally interested in peoples opinions from both sides of the fence.

It's f*****g awful!!!! I actually get really irritated when its the one with the slap bass or the old one with the "jazz" guitar. Both have awful feel and sound like they were played by a novice. The "jazz" guitar one...god knows what they were thinking when they were playing that line! I have put off commenting about this as it really shouldn't bother me, but it really does. Anyone else know what I'm talking about!?

Excellent soundtrack!, but sorry, mine beats yours! The Taking of Pelham 123 Possibly the filthiest groove ever for a main title. Yes David Shire! Also, check out www.blaxploitation.com
Excellent call. I'll raise you with 'Dirty Harry' Lalo Schifrin. Loads of good tracks, & some nice fuzzy bass. Seem to recall Chuck Rainey was bass player on the soundtrack(?) This is probably one of the best books on improvisation I have read. Personally I love academic approaches to improvisation! It gives you a structured way of working through material and sounds that you want in your playing, rather than just playing and hoping something good comes out. His comping book is also excellent. Actually, all his books are.

That is a nice case, and fully waterproof which is nice. I've wanted an incase for ages, but can't afford it at the moment. Ideally I want to find the case i have again (its a levys shaped a bit like an incase, not shaped aroudn the body and neck of the bass), its a levys canvas that has lasted me ages! But they stopped making it!
Anyone care to share theirs?
For starters: 1)Having the right eq (Lots of treble) and round wound strings, you can mimic a scratch DJ by rubbing your right hand over the strings. I first saw Julian Crampton do something similar about 10 years ago. 2)Playing over the fretboard with the left hand. Something Marcus did/does to get peoples attention.
These are brand new. I ordered them from the makers in January, they erm...arrived yesterday, the makers have had a few problems. These are the 2nd set that I've had, the first set (in April), were totally the wrong size, they let me keep them and sent me these as a replacement. They were ordered for my new Sei bass, but obviously never arrived in time, and the bass is fitted with a set of Bartolinis, and I couldn't be happier with it, so I can't be bothered with the hassle of changing them, and have the bass re-routed. Here's a link to the website http://www.q-tuner.com/bl6.shtml As you can see, they're $320 for a set now, that's about £160, but these can be yours for a bargain £100.
Long shot, but I don't suppose the wrong ones were 5 string? Did you keep them aswell? If not, who bought them and what are they like?
cute, but not cute enough... needs bar lines and notes drawn with correct duration to match a selected rhythm... and a greater choice of rhythms... I'm currently printing it off, and drawing in bar lines myself setting things to just quarter notes... ie 4:4 cos that's what they are...
I know what you mean, but it works slightly better (read: Harder) if you play to a set rhythm as described below the stave. Choose any rhythm you want.
Mikey, I've been to NI a few times and honestly have never come across anyone over there, Be sure to visit the Giants Causeway if you haven't already. There is a bit of a scene in Belfast but....? I will ask the guys I know if they've heard of anyone over there. Jake
Thats what i thought. I'm going to live with my folks for a bit and have been over there basically ever year a fewtimes since i was born. Derry has a 'jazz' festival, much like other towns/cities have 'jazz' festivals, but haven't ever met any real jazzers. I went to sligo jazz project last year and met a few guys i can play with, but no one of the standard I would need as a teacher. I'm gonna see if they can recommend anyone aswell. -
Charlie Hunter - Right Now Move - some great grooves a la Medeski, Martin & Wood but with Curtis Fowlkes on trombone and John Ellis on sax/bass clarinet. Fernkky!
I have everything minus the last album that charlie has done and this is one of my favs. I was gutted when I had to let my 8 string go, I was under the delusion that one day I might have been able to play like him! Kenny Garrett-Simply Said has been having a few spins because of Chris Dave on drums. This week has mainly been checking out my vinyl... Oscar Peterson - Nigerian Marketplace (oh NHOP I love you so) Kenny Drew and NHOP - Duo

It looks most likely that I am taking a year out from my jazz studies and moving to Derry for a year. There are a few reasons, one is just so I have a year to REALLY practice and it would be nice to have someone to check in with and work with say every few weeks or once a month. Any Teacher recommendations!? Ideally Advanced teachers who have a deep understanding of jazz. I know Derry isn't exactly the mecca of Jazz but thought someone might know somebody in NI who fits the bill. I don't mind travelling as it won't be that often.
