1. Irakere - Chuco Valdes on bass, he also has a book out called "cuban bass" which is quite good and has a few transcriptions in. For salsa check out some stuff on Fania records. Such as the greatly named Willie Colon.
2. Bilbo...no Steve Swallow! Shame on you. Also: Gary Willis (programs and writes a lot of the parts especially on albums like Actual Fiction) Jean Baudin (For solo bass composition) Wasn't Sammy Nestico originally a bassist?! He's probably composed more than most.
3.
I really like MG's tone, everyones different I suppose, the world would be really boring otherwise. Chris2112....... I was just reading a thread on talkbass about DR strings, and happened to notice that someone with the same name as you, I presume it is you, is banned, I'm just curious , what's a TOS violation ?.
I like matt's tone as well, especially on the future2future dvd. Is TOS, Terms Of Service?! as in the agreement when you sign up to the site?
4.
Hi Mike, Forgive my possible ignorance here but I'm not entirely sure I understand how the mixer works in interaction with a computer. AmI right in thinking that to get the sound into a computer you need to run it through some kind of audio interface that will accept ADAT (like the lightbridge)? Once it is in the computer though, how do you make use of the mixing functions of the desk? Can it, in effect, control Cubase/Logic/Pro Tools etc. or would they just serve as a method of storing the tracks for supply back to the mixer for mix down? Intrigued but confused lol
Regarding the first question about the lightbridge, you are correct. This allows you to run the 16 ins and outs to the mixer and computer. Well the light bridge allows you more, but the desk is only 32 channels (16 in and 16 out) You can switch the 16 faders in banks between ins, outs and master groups & auxs. But you can also use the optical stereo track on the mixer and the optical buses, but i never did that. You don't need to use the adat, but this is probably the best way. The other interface iirc is the tascam connector, which looks like an old serial/parallel connector. The answer to your next question is: both. You can control the computer based sequencer from the desk with mmc or midi etc. So you can stop, start, record, arm tracks for recording etc from the desk. You can also use the midi aspects for automation of mixing just like other hardware controllers out there. You can also add lexicon effects onto tracks on input or mixdown internally from the desk. So you can use this mixer as a standalone with a tape machine, or in affect, your computer could be your tape machine and the mixer can also be your hardward controller. You can also get midi mixer maps for things such as rebirth etc. As a bonus you get 16 of the best mic pres built in to the desk. Does that help? I'm not sure if I have made it clear as it is quite late!
5. Just wondering what VI you used for the strings?
6.
here are (why do people always say "is"?) my tuppence:
Probably because it is a single item.
7. Any particular style!? I know you have mentioned jazz a bit on here before, so maybe check this guy out Erik Friedlander, classical/jazz cellist. He has some tunes for both and you can get scores from him, for a fee, but he has a few ones available. On a side note, its a great resource for listings of cello in jazz.
8.
So then I ask, will any new learning help this? Have any of you ever reached the point where you feel as though you have to stop and think hard? I'm trying to get into the habit of reading about music when I'm not playing it, looking up new techniques, scales, chord passages, but I tend to become lethargic about it all as time goes on. So to you all out there, what have you done to overcome your plateaus and your obstacles? What method of self-teaching worked, or what changes to your solid hour a day improved your playing tenfold?
I have been there many times. As you say you get frustrated. You need to learn not to (easier said than done) and accept what you can do. It's probably better than most but you are blinded by the fact you feel you should be better. Accept the fact that it is not a competition and it has nothing to do with time. As has been said above, make yourself some achievable goals and work towards them. If you don't make them!? So what, its not the end of the world, frustrating yes, but you aren't going to die (even if you feel like it sometimes). Stop and think why you actually play bass. For me it is because I enjoy improvising. And it wasn't until I stopped and changed my way of thinking that I felt improvement. One book I would recommend is Effortless Mastery by Kenny Werner. He deals with basically everything you have said in your post. You can normally pick it up quite cheap on ebay, or your library may have it.
9.
That's interesting mate...mind me asking where that work shop was? I personally quite like Hadrien's playing, he's got it together, although...i don't feel he's quite excelled! I'm in no position to comment to greatly on that though, i guess, like myself...he's still young and inexperienced to a large extent! So i really look forward to seeing him grow as a player and what not!
It was part of the Sligo Jazz Project over in Ireland. This year they have got Reggie Washington teaching. Regarding Hadrian, I don't think I have given him much of my listening time, how knows, maybe I would love his playign if I really checked him out.
10.
It was supposed to be Hadrien Feraud doing the tour, but he busted his hand in...not an ideal injury when you play bass really From what Urb was saying when i spoke to him at the Garrison gig, it sounds as though Dominique was on fire, Mike said that he thinks Dominique is at the top of his game right now, that's pretty awesome!
I'm not really into Hadrien's playing, but I really regret not going, it's not often that Dominique is about, I did a week of workshops with Dipiazza last year and his playing totally floored me, one of the most musical players I have witnessed-but all he kept saying was, check out the other guys in Paris, they are the real deal! May have to get over sometime.
11.
Did they come before the GWB1?
After.
12. So I missed Dominique (Possibly my overall favourite!) aswell as Matt...great! I didn't know he was going to be with Mclaughlin!
13.
The 1005 has apparently sold literally a handful worldwide since it was released - one has been floating around in the UK for the last year or so but at such a ridiculous price no-one wants to touch it with a bargepole!
You know how much or who was selling it!?
14. Apart from ear training and theory, you can do some visualization. Basically think of anything you play and see in your mind how you would actually play it. Scale practice is good for example. It is all about your mind teaching your body and not the other way around as you are probably used to.
15. Didn't somebody on here have a very nice fodera!? Like an AJ presentation model...that has to be the most expensive rrp.
16. I sent my custom hybrid 8 string to spain and it was fine. All in a hardcase and packaged nicely it cost about £70 with interparcel with insurance for £1400 or something. I always make sure i have a few emails and their contact details and speak with the other person on the phone (A land line if possible) and when going through paypal i get them to send an invoice through first.
17. Bumparella... Also, I may trade the desk for an ibook/powerbook/macbook/macbookpro...with cash either way depending on what it is! Who knows...someone may have two, or for some crazy reason want to get rid of theirs!
18. Finally got this bass from Parcelforce...WOW! A few more chips on the bodywork than i was expecting...but it's not about looks is it!? The electronics upgrade has turned this already fine instrument in a BEAST! I'm not sure if it the Nordstrand Dual Coil pickup or Bee Pre is the main contributor, or just a combination of the both, but the output is much higher than the stock electronics. And the tone is lovely and full, and very very quiet in noise terms. When rolling the bass (or any control for that matter) full on, the tone is every usable. Personally I'm not a fan of the setup and strings but that can be easily changed. Just having the extra tone control options on the bass is very nice. I always liked having a very simple volume, tone layout, but the additional features the previous owner has added has only enhanced the sounds you can get out of this bass. The only thing left to do now is buy a pack of Warwick Blacks w/high C and a nice low setup and I'm back in business...I may have to let my Spector go to get another one of these with the same upgrade and replace the fretboard for a fretted one I like it so much! I would definitely recommend this upgrade to anyone with a GWB35 who feels their bass doesn't have enough oomph! Note: I forgot it even had push/pull for passive and for a different mid freq...I'm off to try that now!
19.
yeah it was the series 2 xd I was referring too.... I have the series one and was after a series two.... thanks anyway
No problem. Cheers.
20. Hi, it is this one: Spirit 328. I believe there was only one series of 328, the one they released afterwards was the 328XD (Which was blue). If you are referring to software, it is 1.something, although it can be upgraded no problem to 2. I never did this as the situation was if it's not broke, don't fix it! Unless you mean something else about the series that I don't know.
21. I'm moving now; so I've decided to sell my recording setup as I don't use it as much as I now have access to a studio when I need it. Used with the G1D Divided Pickup Unit for guitar, or the B1D Divided Pickup Unit for bass, the G50 is much more than a "patch" that lets you sort-of play synthesizers from your chosen instrument. It seamlessly integrates your guitar into the world of MIDI for unprecedented musical freedom and scope. What Do You Need? If you play 6-string electric or steel-string acoustic guitar, you'll need the G1D Divided Pickup Unit; if you play bass (4-,5- or even 6-string), the B1D Divided Pickup Unit. Both pickups provide a number of attachment options that allow optimum installation on a variety of instruments (e.g. you can use special non-marring adhesive pads if you don't want to drill even tiny holes in your precious axe). The B1D can be set up so that you can remove and replace the pickup whenever you like without having to readjust the pickup height. You'll also need the G50 Guitar MIDI Converter - the "brains" of the system - and a MIDI tone generator or synthesizer for sound. Possible systems range from simple to very complex, according to your individual musical requirements. * Memory: 128 * Guitar Setup: Playing Style, Note On Level, Note Off Level, Velocity, Chromatic, Transpose, Pitch Bend Range * External Tone Generator Setup: Program Number, Program Bank MSB, LSB, Volume, Pan, Assignable Control Number 1, 2, Assignable Control Value 1, 2 * Real Time Control: Split, Split Memory 2 Number, Memory Location, Picking Position Control, Picking Front Position Value, Picking Rear Position Value, Touch Control, Touch Sensitivity, Sustain/Hold Pedal * System Setup: Input Gain, MIDI Channel, Tuning Pitch * Other: G1D & B1D Up/Down Button Function Settings (Data Entry, Program Number, Octave Shift) Chromatic Tuner, Demo Program Type (User, MU series, VL70-m, VL 1-m Version 2), MIDI Bulk Receive and Transmit * Operation: Union jack LED x 1, 7 segment LED x 3, Mode LED x 3, Panel Switch x 8, Power Switch * Connections: DIVIDED Input Jack, MONO SYNTH Input Jack, GUITAR DIRECT OUT Jack, MIDI IN/OUT Jack, SUSTAIN/HOLD Jack, DC-IN Jack * Power Supply: KPA3 AC adaptor * Accessory: 13 Pin Cable: 7 m * Dimensions (W x D x H): 482.6 x 201.8 x 44.0 mm (19" x 8" x 1-3/4") * Weight: 2.2 kg (4 lbs., 14 oz.) More than welcome for people to come and look at the items, I am based in Birmingham.
