Welcome to basschat. Hangs head in shame, as I cannot remember any of the French I learnt at school.

My bottom jaw protrudes, my tongue dangles out the corner of my mouth and I frown. So I have no advice for you I'm afraid. All that sounds bloody awful doesn't it? EDIT: no there are no photos of this abomination, and I'm off to find a large paper bag to hide my hideous bass face.
News German ones seem to be on sale for nearly double what I paid for mine new last September. Thomann and others are cashing in perhaps? I love my German Corvettes.
I love your German Corvettes.
I'm of the 'working it out by ear' variety. Nothing wrong with using books, and I do occasionally, but I find it's better to try and work it out myself and get a feel for it, only looking at a book if I'm really stuck.

Ok.. I'm being an eejit and thought you meant learning the songs.. feel free to ignore me
My 'ear' isn't very good. I'm sort of trying to learn some theory and to read music in order to improve my overall playing, which is quite weak TBH. Learning a few songs along the way would be a nice bonus though, and it may improve my ear. Besides Karnivool fans aren't eejits

Lessons From Someone Other Than A Bass Player
Marvin replied to Pete Academy's topic in General Discussion
Wow, Ali Akhbar Khan - I'm impressed! I know most people tend to think of Ravi Shankar here when it comes to Sitar -- mostly thanks to The Beatles, I guess -- but I've heard a few things from AAK and he is mind-blowing! I'm certainly no expert myself in this field. No doubt, there are other excellent sitarists around. I just haven't heard them.
Totally Off Topic, but they were saying on the wireless this morning Ravi Shanker is 90 this year. I couldn't believe it. -
would you not be better off using Guitar pro which allows you to hide the tab and just look at notation. I think my version cost 30 quid
I'd never really thought of that, as I am not at all familiar with Guitar Pro. Like Doddy though I prefer to practice away from the computer, in part due to where it is. Or can you print notation off from Guitar Pro? As I said I don't know anything about this software.

I quite like the tone of some of the Australian hard rock bands like Karnivool and Cog. They seem to like to use Warwicks going through Ashdowns, but they do tend to use a lot effects it seems. Good tone.

Thank you both for your advice, especially in respect on how to approach using these books. I shall bare those caveats in mind.

Does anyone know the exact bassline of this?
Don't suppose you'd be so kind as to tab it for me would you?

Sorry dude. I could write it out for you but I don't have anyway of scanning it onto my computer yet. And after all my slagging off of tab,I couldn't do it that way in principle.
I was going to say, don't mention TAB in front of Doddy. -
If it's a dumb question, please feel free to 'hit' me. However, do the play-along books that are available or sheet music for songs or tracks you already have (i.e the intention then to play along to them) of any use or value in assisting a player learning to read music? Is 'playing along' to a track wrong? Should you read and play the piece in isolation?

Can't argue she's talented. Don't know about the tone though, the recording didn't seem good enough to give an accurate opinion.
Beat me to it! I just got that from Google. I feel officially old!
You can't be old, you're only 37 that's the same age as me and I'm definitely not old, the wife said the other day 'oh, just grow up will you?' The bass player may claim to be male but I have my doubts. Hermaphrodite potentially
It's Friday night, I guess everyone is out gigging. We've had other Friday night TV threads that have really gone mad.
I've noticed there's not many about tonight. Afraid I'm off now, work in the morning. Cheers

When should you play with a drum machine?
Marvin replied to No1skewenjack's topic in General Discussion
To be honest,so do a lot of other musicians.
Ah, yes, can't argue there. I think that's why I used to really enjoy jamming with my best mate. He always doubted his ability, but I always found it really easy to play bass when he was playing. Halcyon days. -
THey are all as good as each other really. Its the doing of the thing that is hard and takes focus. The concepts are quite simple..
I understand the symbols, well a lot of them . But am unable to apply this understanding, that will take a lot of time. I've just started learning to read the dots (and I mean just, like this week). The expectation for many I think is that it's just a five minute affair to be able to learn to read sheet music. However, you wouldn't expect to have a full conversation in a foreign language if you only started learning it a few days ago. I've got a couple of books I am using (I simply can't fit in lessons, it's simply impossible, thankfully I know a few people who can read music and constantly ask them questions). Books though are a minefield, one persons meat is another's poison. I've got Adrian Ashton's bass handbook which has got a section on reading music and some bits on theory. Can't really remember what the other one is, it's red with a P bass on the front.

Marvin replied to No1skewenjack's topic in General Discussion
Most drummers seem to vastly overrate themselves - well the ones I've met. (The only one who didn't was a mate who had no kit, no lessons, knew his limitations and just jammed with us because it was fun). Drum machines don't have egos, which is a great benefit. -
The new(ish) Gerald Veasley signature model seems to be priced at around 4700 pounds
HOW MUCH! Like Doddy said, looks the biz, but what a price.
The mere mention o f Let's Groove Tonight (or McFadden & Whitehead's Ain't No Stopping Us Now) has a strange effect on this ageing rocker and for a second I am the disco dance king. Wonder why my kids find me embarrassing?
A bit before my time, I am quite young after all. Only the other day someone at work shouted, JUVENILE, at me.
