OK,with two important gigs next weekend, rebuilding my mountain bike & subsequently trapping my r/h index finger beween the brake caliper & rotating front brake disc was probably not a good idea. That aside I am now left with a flap of skin & a deep cut in the worst possible place,my daughter seems to think that there is such a product as liquid skin. Any one out there with any knowledge or ideas on how to repair & harden up the end of my damaged plucking finger,I seem to remember reading that stevie ray vaughen used super glue to harden the tips of his fingers, what I don't want is a hideous sceptic mess so only sensible tried & tested ideas please, mike b.
Chances are it will heal sufficiently before next week-end so leave it as long as possible before doing anything. The liquid plaster is a waste of time. I resorted to this once and ended up with the cut re-opening mid set and blood dripping all over the place. If it hasn't healed enough by next week-end the superglue solution does work. If you need to practice during the week, cut the fingers out of a disposable glove ond put it over the offending area. Absolutely NO feel, but it will stop it opening. Finally, stop doing daft things with a Mountain Bike.
 2.
Guys, My Wife has announced that she'd like to buy me a "Keeper" Bass for my 40th Birthday (September 2010) and this time i'm going to do something i've never done and get one made for me to my spec.....
I am going through exactly that process as we speak. When my 60th birthday was looming, (Jan 06 09), my wife gave me 3 options. A - A Party - No thanks, I would probably end up inviting the same people who came to my 40th and 50th and i've spent enough on them B - A Cruise - Great idea until we got got some lucrative gigs over Xmas and New Year C - Have a BASS BUILT - It took exactly 1 nano-second to decide. Having bought and sold Basses over the years I had a pretty good idea of what my ideal Bass is. I thought it would be easy, but being faced with WOOD WOOD and WOOD and having to pick the bits I wanted, that was an awesome challenge. Fortunately Mr D Perry and Greeneking arrived when I was choosing and re-inforced my decision. Then it was pick-ups, hardware etc. etc. I reckon if you have played a number of Basses over the years you will have liked certain points from each of them. Now you can have all of that built into your ideal instrument. I can tell you the anticipation is fantastic and being involved in picking the organic components is awesome. All the luthiers mentioned are excellent, but I would put my weight behind ACG, because I asked Alan to build my "Dream Machine". Good Luck
 3.
Generally yes, but not always? The Sadowsky preamp is all boost isn't it? I suppose that means that their knobs don't have a centre-dent! Si
Generally any pre-amps that are boost only don't have mid-detent.
 4.
If you could wave a magic wand and make it grow another string and err...wider fretboard etc I'd have it...I want a G&L L2500 BAD!!!
You mean likey so. But it ain't For Sale
 5.
Normal for active basses' tone pots. It seems to be the "neutral" point between cut and boost ...
Spot on Si. It is the point at which the Pot doesn't have any effect. When you wind it one way it Boosts and the other way, Cuts.
 6.
Hi Just because I'm an awkward bugger, I'd like to change my Jazz Bass from conventional wiring with seperate volume controls per pickup and a common passive tone to a master volume with a centre detented blend/mix control (and retaining the common passive tone for now). Obviously, the pickups need to be wired to the blend/mix control, with the blended/mixed output going to master volume and then to tone control before heading to the output jack. Don't suppose anyone has a wee schematic for a blend control do they? If anyone can suggest values (and a suitable supplier) for the respective pots, then that'd be handy too. Thanks in advance folks, G
Hi G, Have a full set of ready wired up Vol/Blend/Tone Jack if you are interested.

Thought I'd give everyone a heads up cos this is one hell of a price I think
Do you have any contact details? Only an e-mail on the ad. Cheers
 9.
Did you buy this one off BassBunny last year ? Ed.
Ed, He did indeed. It is a fantastic Bass. Really easy to play and I actually think the narrow spacing helps, (hasn't hindered Stanley Clark and Mark King to name but 2). The only reason I sold it was to help finance an incoming Bass I had wanted for some time. Whoever springs for this won't be disappointed and no picture can show how beautiful the bass is in real life. I can vouch for Dave, he is a great guy to deal with.
 10. Try Grover Grime Guard. http://www.wdmusic.co.uk/product/Grover_Gr..._W|_Cloth_GP100 I put a scratch in a brand new Fender P Bass that went down to the undercoat. Grime Guard somehow got rid of it and we are talking a Red Top Coat and white primer. Don't ask me how it works, it just did. Since then I have polished all my Basses with it. Handy thing is it resists finger-marks. It is an absolute swine to apply as you need to pretty quick with the "polishing up" stage or it goes "foggy" and takes much elbow grease to polish up. Worth it IMHO
 11.
I have my eye on a bass that's up for sale at the mo but if that goes, trades are possible but please don't take the piss. A nice P or J, maybe a Sandberg or a good lined fretless with + / - cash adjustment might tempt me.
You'll get on well with a Sandberg Al. Mine is really light and you are welcome to try it any time. My G&L hasn't been getting a look in since i got the Sandberg.
 12. Hi Chris, If the neck is the problem what about having it re-profiled/re-finished or a neck made to your spec. I was talking to Bernie Goodfellow a while back about a KSD that he installed his own pick-ups and an EBS pre-amp. I was looking at bidding on e-Bay for it but wanted to know about the neck profile. Long story short it wasn't what I wanted BUT he said if I did buy it, whizz down to see him and he would re-profile it. An afternoons work he reckoned. Bear in mind this was a Bass he supplied, but any decent luthier should be able to do the work - OR - Plan B. Have a neck made exactly the same as the treasured Jazz, but to fit the Sadowsky. The beauty of this plan is you can always put the original neck back on if you do want to sell. When Dave Perry was having a new headless Bass made by ACG, he had Alan measure his beloved Status to make sure the ACG had the same Scale/String Spacing etc. so it can be done. If you sell the Sadowsky you may never get that killer sound again. You are half way there with your ideal Bass, something a lot of players never achieve. On another note, there was a mention of Sandberg earlier in the thread. Since buying one I reckon I will be thinning my collection down, including some "I will never sell basses". Absolutely fantastic neck and killer sound. May be worth a look if you don't keep the Sadowsky. Good Luck
 13. Just got the flyer for this and surprised it is now only 1 day. Always used to be over the May Bank Holiday and on Sunday/Monday. No Marshall this year either. Used to love watching the Chris George Band. Probably worth going to see Escape Committee. Peter Frampton is an awesome guitarist. Don't expect a lot of Bass stuff, it tends to be very Guitar Orientated, but great for leads and odds and sods.
 14.
Cheers Chris - simplicity - now that's complicated...! Just found this little clip of Wooten and Carter Beauford laying down some blues... it's sounds wicked: Another thing to try is let the music tell YOU what to play, so instead of trying to cram all your stock licks/bass lines into a song/jam - let the feel of the drums, guitar, keys whatever decide what notes you play - if this is too much to try on a full on jam session why not get together with some mates, plug in and see what happens - and don't talk about it beforehand - just listen to each other play... Mike
I must admit to having a great deal of time for Victor Wooten and I love his approach and philosophy. I got hold of his Groove Workshop and it really does put the importance of Groove into context. He did a great demonstration in front of his 6 students of how "wrong notes played in the groove" don't sound wrong.
 15.
And that might be the key Homer. I get more positive comments about my bass playing now (mostly root notes TBH) than I ever did when I was trying to be Flea or Jaco. Chris
Now that is something I can really relate to and is oh so true. When switching from Guitar to bass, I started by trying to cram in as many notes as I could, ie: playing bass like a guitarist. Reading an article by a well-respected Bass Player sorted that and 2 comments have stuck with me ever since: "Think of what you want to play and half it!" "It is the silence between the nates that make the notes"
 16. Hi Al, Been going trough a similar problem. Nick gave me a couple of Guitar/Drum tracks and the chord Structures to put my own Bass line to. Realised I was really stuck for ideas. Did the first one but was really stuck coming up with something different for the second. Realised that by doing some Chord Work, the door has started to open. Incidently, where abouts in Manchester is it? Might come down and see if thunderthumbs fancies it.
 17.
Hi, I'm not sure what the scale length is? How would I check mate? Cheers Stu
If you measure from the nut to the 12th fret and then double it.

 19.
I'm thinking of putting a sticker on my bass, but was wondering is there anything I can do to the sticker, so that removing it will be easier - should I choose to do so a couple of years down the line? ta.
I have just had to do this. I bought a Sandberg recently that some tosser had put a really large Steinlager sticker on the back. Carefully used a hairdryer to get it off and then used one of the "stain removers" for sticky stuff. Perfect now. One thing to bear in mind is that some stickers have an adhesive that "eats" into the finish. You could end up removing the sticker but haveing the outline etched into the bass. I was lucky.....
 20.
Looking in the Sheffield area, looked everywhere and found nothing, anyone know a tutor in Sheffield?
Check the Bass Tutor Thread in't Marketplace. Sure I have seen a tutor in Sheffield area...
 21. Dave has just left clutching a LAG 5-String in his mitts. What a great guy to deal with. Drove from Stourbridge to pick it up. Nice to meet you Dave and enjoy......
 22. Check out the Yolanda Charles session from last year's Bass Day here. http://www.dustyend.com/finnbass/bassday08/ I managed to record it and she does a workshop on Singing and Playing. Bottom line is: Learn each part seperately and then bring them together, but slowly......
