1. I like steels too. I find D'Addario Pro Steels are good value. You can bash them hard with a pick and they last a fair while. I find nickels too refined sounding. Roundwounds are off the menu too. I like a bit of clang, zing and fret buzz going on.
2.
One Nickelback song vs. every other Nickelback song
That's not fair. There's a bit of stylistic variety in their reportoire. They are all **** songs though.
3. I split gig time between my US Fender P and a budget Eastwood Stormbird. The Precision is the better bass but the Eastwood looks so much cooler in photos. Reverse snobbery?
4. From my experience a 'Pro' is someone who seldom gets there round in.
5. I dunno? I've met quite a few pro footballers. Can they articulate about their sport with any insight? I've met quite a few pro musicians.... PS Never meet your heroes.
6.
TBH you're right. Wind the treble up and play aggressively with some distortion and that sound is there irrespective of the bass used.
You called
7.
* Not sure how it works in the UK, but over here you can have bands that are very good musically, but can never seem to grasp marketing and get work. And we can have marginal bands that get the whole marketing thing and turn a profit with consistent bookings. Blue
Oh it's the same here too. I know some fantastic bands who just can't promote themselves and vice-versa. The really good ones who make it tend to have a savvy member or manager. I also know one band that really should have made it big and had it all going for them but they've signed not one, but two awful sell your soul to the devil restraining contracts. Wouldn't be so bad if one of them wasn't a lawyer.... Rock n roll. You get a sniff of the barmaid's apron and common sense goes out the window.
8. F is a sneaky ***** who would get off with your girlfriend. A is the sort of upstanding chap you would like next to you in the trenches.
9.
Am I weird or something? My best rig is no rig at all!! Turn up, plug in to the Fishman P Pro (DB) / Zoom 9.1 (BG) and play... If I *must* then the best rig is my current rig (BF Midget T and or Compact + Ashdown LG previous pre amps as required).
You're not weird at all. I'm more than happy to stick my Sansamp BDDI through a decent PA and just use an amp as a stage monitor. With a really good PA it 's the sound/tone I like best by far.
10. I've always wondered how this scenario would pan out for a review video. Have a band play a verse and a chorus in loops. Give the bass player different basses and leave amp setting flat only adjusting the imput gain to level the output. Would there be as much difference as we think once they're in the mix I wonder...
11. I like those Talman's a lot. I could definitely rock this one... http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/TMB300MFT/
12. I've 2 Precisions. One with a BBOT and one with a Badass II. I swapped them once to find out if I could hear a difference. I couldn't notice any sonic alteration at all.
13. Nothing there to excite me much. If the new Jag Bass had a maple neck option I might be tempted though. I'd like to see someone attempt gigging that Steve Harris bass on the Isle of Dogs....
14. I've lost a bit of weight and the ring is now too big to wear anyway. A bit of a relief as it did get in the way now and then because of my slightly agricultural technique.
15. Bob Mould - Silver Age It kicks bottom.
16. Good luck with your new drummer Conan. Sounds like he passed the audition. I'm simultaneously excited and bricking it at the same time to be starting something new. I realised I've been playing exclusively with the same drummer and guitarist for nearly 9 years now!
17.
Good recovery! Low End Bee what is that bass?
Deusenberg Starplayer Outlaw. Yum.
18. New band night tonight. In the end chance and asking people I already know have got this one off the ground. I bumped into a drummer I know in my local who asked me what I was up to and was enthusaistic to get involved. Good news as he's genuinely been my favourite drummer since I was a teenager and I never thought he would be interested. I've also got a mystery basschatter on board on guitar, Rog from the Jetsonics on keys and giving a vocalist friend of the 'guitarist' who sounds like a good fit a try out. God knows what it'll sound like but I'm sure it'll be fun finding out.
19. I would definitely look more attractive to women with one of these...
20.
I just watched 4 videos claiming to explain the difference between a P bass and a Jazz. I hear the words and they make sense and then they play the basses and I am buggered if I can tell the difference definitively. A guy says 'this P has more puch' and then 'zzzzzzing' follwed by 'this Jazz has mroe bite' and then 'doink'. I just don't think any of it matters very much!
I'll go along with that. I prefer the way a Precision hangs on a strap and find the neck more comfortable to play. Apart from that EQ can pretty much level the playing field. Still not sure which is better for metal though?
21. [sub]I don't really give a monkey's how a bass sounds solo. What would be more interesting is to play diferent basses in a band context for comparison.[/sub] [sub]I guess that's of no interest to the 'bedroom bubinga botherers'* though.[/sub] [sub]*(c) xilddx[/sub]
22. Good luck. If nothing else you'll give the bands you approach a bit of a confidence in what they're doing. It's a nice thing to have a hub that has an identity to make bands feel like they're part of something bigger than just themselves. There should be lots more of this sort of thing. That does not include the fantasists I 'signed*' with a couple of years ago though! I'm sure you will be clearer and more realistic with expectations both ways than they were. *I had my fingers crossed so it didn't count.
23. PS I used to stick overdrive and fuzz in front of the Terror for a couple of songs. Just turned filth into super filth. Good though!
