1. There's nothing for me like seeing a crowd getting off on something I've written* and performed, It's a tint bit about ego I suppose.... *or creatively plagiarised
2. Imagination - In The Heat Of The Night LP. Nice synth bass. Resisting the urge to cut one trouser leg off.
3. You can always use the neck as a paddle if you're stuck up a creek too
4.
They can last up to a year if they're looked after. As stated previously, they're a very well made, high-quality string. The set I have on my OLP Stingray has probably been on it for the best part of a year. They could probably do with being changed, but they haven't degraded physically, and they actually still sound quite good, so I have no real plans to change them just for the sake of putting a fresh set on.
Indeed. Much better that the DR Black Beauties I was using before at £34 a set. If only they came in a sexy black option too.
5. Nice job. Looks the part. I've managed to 'relic' my P bass from new. 7 years of being clumsy, bashing into things, playing with cufflinks and chunky watch straps. I had to sand down all the chips and wear a bit as it was scratchy and uncomfotable to play otherwise. I should put up some pics. It looks like some terrible half arsed job when it's actually all authentic
6. D'Addario Pro Steels. EPS something or other. Stay zingy for a fair time and still sound OK when you can't be arsed to change them.
7. What's happened to you Mr Discreet? All fancy pants now. 5 frikkin strings and stained woodyness. I thought you were one of us man...
8. For the 837th time I will state that nothing diminishes my interest in watching a band more than the jeans (or even worse shorts) and t shirt thing. I don't really mind if they're ugly or look a bit weird or whatever. I just want my entertainers to look like they've made an effort rather than look like they've just strolled up from the bar.
9. I would imagine that if you're a bass player in a big name band you're not going to lower yourself to sucking up to the sound man/woman before the gig as much as I do...
10. As a few have mentioned the Royal Albert Hall I'd say the best big gig bass sound I've heard was the Specials there a couple of years ago. The mix was excellent for the whole band too. I was in the Royal Box (she didn't seem to mind) so I don't know if that makes a difference?
11. A pogoing physician in a Ramones T Shirt who'd had 10 pints was the highlight of our gig in the Highlands last week. Well played 'Doctor Mosh' as we dubbed him. It's normally a reserved crowd but they were right up for it this time. Lots of dancing and whooping. No Wi-Fi or phone signal for nearly 2 days. It was like being back in 1977.
12.
There was nothing wrong with Norm's bass mix when I saw The Blockheads last week
Better luck than me. Last couple of times I've seen him with Wilko it's just been an indistinct low end rumble.
13.
True... some of my basslines are very simple, I'm not one to overcomplicate things at the expense of serving a song. I just feel sometimes the input of a proper bass player is overlooked in many bands... Guitarists tend to feel that because they can physically play the bass they can write suitable basslines, when in truth the role of the bass is more rooted in DB than it is in guitar and the writing of a good bassline is very different to that of a melody. The electric bass is seen as synonymous with the electric guitar as they look similar and are played in a similar fashion, whereas in reality they are completely different instruments, requiring seperate approaches to composition. I guess my view stems from my experience of turning up to auditions having learnt songs where I know I can offer a better balenced bassline than the original (often written by the guitarist / songwriter as root notes of the chord sequence) and being told "you have to play exactly whats been written". Which to my mind equates to me standing on a stage playing something which I know isn't good enough.
If you're in an originals band and someone tells you what bassline to play surely you should politely tell them to go **** themselves? If you're new it doesn't matter how the bloke before played it. He's not here now is he? They can suggest something to play and argue their case of course. As I do to the other members of the band. But you should be comfortable and in control of your area. Back to recruitment. I've looked at join my band, party sounds. Depressing stuff...
14. Band 1 will have some pocket money potential. But it's just going to be about playing. If my idea for band 2 gets off the ground the way I want I would be surprised if it covers expenses!
15. I wouldn't be in a band that had revenue as a goal. It's all about the art dears...
16. Thanks for the suggestions I shall investigate. I only have a vocalist left to find for band 1 now. Band 2 is going to be a bit more off the beaten track so ads will be out out.
17. Where's the best place these days? I'm a bit bored at the moment so I'm looking to have another one definitely and maybe even two new bands to start up. I've been with the same lot for 8 years now so I'm out of the loop.
18.
Agreed, S p u n k is musically a much better album, and Glen Matlock really shows great bass-playing.
I actually prefer Jones' root notes. Much more powerful sound to my ears. Matlock always sounds like he's overplaying the songs to me.
19. Free entry. No excuses
20. Yay! No tube strike!
21. Back in Tin Pan Alley. I do like the 12 Bar. The first outing for the new 4 piece line up with BC'er TransistorBassMan Rog on keys. Not for the faint hearted as we're on at 11pm following the Trees Slipway, thje Len Price 3 and the Fallen Leaves. Should be a good night. I've booked Thursday off.
22. TransistorBassMan has taken up employment with Jetsonics Global Inc
23. Gigs. I've tried pretty much everything else and it's mostly a waste of time. Presentation helps too. Don't look like the audience and do nice flyers and posters. Write good tunes and entertain.
24.
You've got mail.
Excellent!
