1. Can we please when we are referring to early 80s Fenders as not being of good quality be particular and say 80/81. It could be thought that early 80s includes the basses made from 82 to 85. The 82 - 85 basses were produced when USA production was getting going again with greatly increased quality as Sibob rightly says. The standard basses were being produced along side the reissues so the quality of workmanship was the same. I hesitate to say it again but a 82 -85 USA Standard bass is a different animal than an 80/81 bass. The basses in 80/81 were being produced from existing stock parts and are no different from 70s basses. The 80/81 basses have serial numbers beginning with 'S9'. The 82-85 basses have serial numbers beginning with 'E' and are not to be confused with 80/81 basses.
2. Some months ago I was in need of raising funds and put my 1984 USA Precision up for sale. It is a much loved instrument and is truly superb. The ad was only in a day or so and I had too withdraw it as the bass is just too good to part with. I found alternative ways to raise funds. I know that JV basses are excellent but it does really irk me when they are always described as being better than USA basses. The comparison is not necessary. If the JVs are so good then why bother to compare? It all seems to me to be a fashion. I have played a JV precision and whilst it was a good bass I would certainly never want it in preference to my 84. As has already been said these basses never used to command such high prices and I wonder if this again is one of these situations that if some people extol the virtues of a bass then others simply accept and the snowball gets bigger. Who knows what prices the USA 82 - 85 precisions/jazzes may command in the future. They should in no way be compared to the 'S9' basses of the seventies and 80/81 period. They are very different. I had an 81 S9 and moved it on quickly. So maybe when enough time has passed the last of the Fullerton basses of the 82-85 era will become much loved. I am referring to the basses with the white one-piece scratchplate and white pickup covers. All the above of course is only my opinion and I daresay there will be those whose opinion will greatly differ. Thank goodness for basschat that we can hold our differing opinions.
3. I just bought a bass from Phil last week. Great bass and a great price. It's always a pleasure to do business with nice people who take the time to talk and give as much info as possible. I will certainly be a returning customer.
4. Judging by all the pros out there it seems that Fender is top of the tree.
5. Neepheid, you're needed here!
6. As they say round these parts - no pics, no bass. So here she is in all her glory. She also sounds as good as she looks.
7. Ok my friends I have pulled the trigger on a Cort A4 SP Custom. When she arrives I'll put up pics.
8. Thanks once again for all the very helpful comments. I find myself drawn to these basses for some reason but as I live in a city where the music shops have no imagination it is unlikely that I will get to try one out before buying so all comments here are much appreciated. Also, particular thanks to Tonteee for the offer of a lend. In how many forums would you find that kind of camaraderie?
9. Just sold a 62 Precision Reissue to Gareth. It was a pleasant and friendly transaction with no hassles. Many thanks Gareth.
10. I have just sold a bass. From the ad appearing in 'basses for sale' till the new owner took delivery was 51 hours. Not bad for a sale that involved a courier taking the bass from Aberdeen to Bristol. Can anyone beat that for a bass being sold from time of advertising to delivery by courier?
11. Many thanks for all these replies they have been most helpful.
12. Is this the bass for sale in Angeldust Guitars?
13. Many thanks Howie!
14. I'm looking for opinions on Cort Artisan series basses. Are they any good? Build quality? Playability? Sounds? etc.
15. I have for sale my immaculate Fender USA 62 Reissue Precision Bass from 2003. This bass has had a very easy life and is therefore almost like new. The only tiny mark on the bass is on the upper bout (pictured) and measures 5mm in length. The paint is unbroken but I mention the mark for honesty and transparency sake. Any other marks from the pics are bits of fluff from the case or reflections. I have included two sets of pics, one in the sunlight and one inside so that the colour of the bass can be appreciated. Please note that this is a 62 reissue and not a later 63. The chrome covers have never been fitted and are included in the unopened case candy. The bass therefore has no drilled hole marks where the covers would be. The only unoriginal parts are the Schaller strap buttons. These can be removed and the originals fitted. In any case the originals will be included in the sale. The bass is currently strung with Thomastik TI Flatwounds. The original case is also included in the sale. There are scuff marks on the corners of the case although these are very much surface scuffs. This is a light bass and measures a smidgeon over 8lbs on my luggage scales. 16. A truly superb looking Stingray. I'm sure it sounds as good as it looks. It would be marvellous if the dog was part of the deal. Who could refuse these eyes?
17. That is a very nice Precision Nick. I hope you find your rosewood board.
18. Your camera is taking a very long time to recharge.
19.
Damn! And I need one of them sweaters too ...
That's a different Arran Jack! That one's spelt Aran.
20. I owned a Custom Shop Masterbuilt Bass for a short time before I moved it on. I was so disappointed in the instrument and I am a Fender fan. Don't get me wrong it was a nice bass but in my opinion the quality of workmanship was no better than the excellent American Standard offering. However, there is a significant difference in price between the two. The CS bass just didn't do it for me. I have come to the conclusion that the Custom Shop is over-hyped. The only advantage I can see is getting a bass the exact way you want it. However, in saying that I have just purchased a Jazz Bass which has been put together by a guitar builder in this country from Fender parts. The quality is superb and all at a fraction of the cost of a CS instrument. If I was wanting another bass built to my spec I certainly won't be paying CS prices.
21. I am quite frankly amazed that this bass is still here at this price. If I didn't already have three precisions I would be adding this one to my arsenal. Surely, people aren't waiting for further price reductions. There comes a point where it's just unfair to expect a bass of this quality and condition to cost any less. If this bass was being offered by a guitar store it would cost a good bit more.
