Hey all I've started playing for a live HipHop band called 'Shallow & The Deep' www.myspace.com/shallowandthedeep We've got an Emergenza gig (I know, con merchants) at the Purple Turtle in Camden on Tuesday the 16th Feb. If you're in the area, come down and say Hi, it's a horrible battle of the bands type thing that's based on show of hands. I think Thomas Haake from Meshuggah has a similar outlook, everything lauds him as an amazing drummer, which he is technically, but all he's doing by his own admission, is recreating drum tracks that were often written on computer. Perhaps the 'tone' arguement is indeed used by some to rationlise expensive purchases, I couldn't say. I've paid over £1000 for a bass twice in my life. One was my EUB that I know longer have, and the second was my 1973 Jazz. I love the '73 but it often makes way for my '03 MIA S1 Jazz that I paid £275 for ( ). But getting back on topic, I refer back to my position of preferring to have a good tone between bass and amp that I like (given the musical situation). I can then add to it as necessary or upon request. But to start with a poor 'core sound' and live with it just because i'm GOING to add other sounds/effects seems like a backward way of doing things to me. I'm sure my tone has changed as I've grown and gigged more, thats the nature of things, I wouldn't say my basic tone is boring because I enjoy it and I believe it adds something to whatever music I'm playing. So therefore changing things for the sake of it, rather than it serving a purpose also seems backward to me........but perhaps it's me that's backward Si

Well yes, point taken, but then the whole thread is subjective to the point of irrelevence, we proceed regardless though . Even if the individual tones of the two basses are perceived differently by me and you, lets say the band leader also prefers the sound of the Jazz over the Precision, then why would I continue to use a Precision at a show just for the sake of my personal need for 'Variety'. I love the Jazz equally, and in this example it's giving more to the music than the Precision does. That is surely the ultimate goal, to marry your personal gratification with making the music/band sound the best that it can. Si

Geddy Lee Jazz's are 20 frets, an American Jazz Deluxe is 21 Frets, and so the necks aren't inter-changeable, it would result in the bridge being in the wrong place and therefore impossible to intonate!. If you're talking about a Mexican Deluxe Jazz though, they have 20 frets and would be inter-changeable with the Geddy Si

Sorted Apparently it's the polarity switch that swaps around the functionality. Typically the cheaper pedal I bought doesn't have such a switch, so I exchanged it for the Boss equivalent which has said switch, and voila! Cool Si

If you took away my pedalboard, 90% of the audience would notice.[/quote] See that's the thing, my covers band is fundamentally a three piece (and then plus vocals), but when I first joined and tried using any effects to 'beef' up the sound while the guitarist solo'd, I found that they still got lost. Distortions sucked my low end away, choruses and reverbs etc just got lost through PA volume and octaves can be played manually anyway (baring in mind it's pop music so super low notes aren't needed and fast lines won't track anyway). I take up the extra sonic space (if it sounds good to do so), with double-stops, perhaps an extended line based on the horn line in the song...or something like that. Again, I'm not saying that anyone else's techniques are wrong, cos they make you happy, but for me I feel I can do justice to songs by adjusting my playing on my chosen bass as opposed to any other external gear I use. And yes the rehearsal went well cheers Silldx , shooting a video on sunday, then a Camden gig next Tuesday (16th) I ended up not using the distorted sound because......it sucked the low end out my sound The bottom boost was cool, gives a real dub sound, and the chorus was pretty lost, although it's only meant to give a real subtle warble on the bottom anyway, so I may leave it on. Again, just using subtle effects because of the musical situation, but all added to a solid tone that can stand alone if necessary. Si

My basic position, given the original context of the thread, is that regardless of what effects and EQ I'm having to apply for any given musical situation, if all of that failed and I was back to a 'naked' tone between bass and amp, I'd rather have a tone that made me happy and smile than a tone I hadn't bothered about because I was using so many other variables.
