1. Z is USA, so it will probably just be a standard. A picture will help, but if it's just solid colour/sunburst, dot markers, passive (Vol/Vol/tone, possibly with S1 switch)....thats a standard , great basses! Si
2.
Yep - this fella is superb;
...and I'd put money on him citing VW as a major influence .....along with Flea of course lol Si
3.
Itks not so much that he does the punching of his bass, its the people that like it. While I'm not classically trained and probably know nothing about composition, but those fast bits are totally cold, void of any feeling and happen randomly towards the end. Coupled with the punching, it jst makes me want top listen to JLS, or some equally processed tosh that the producor and marketer have decided everyone likes. I like to think I know my way around a bass but if I, or you, started smacking muted strings people would think its sh*t and that I'm crazy. However because this guy had 1 or 2 success and is supposedly talented he gets away with it.
I'm sorry, but subjectivity aside, you're completely missing the point. There is zero aspect of randomness about any clip that Wooten or anyone at his level plays, everything is chosen and pre-determined, thats the level of their facility. Now the subjectivity comes in when you disagree with their choice of how to voice a certain note or technique. Nor would I say it's cold, while you may not appreciate the musicality of what VW does, I absolutely don't agree that it is free from groove, ignoring your preference for melody & harmony, it grooves like a monster. I don't have too much time for 'solo bass', there are very few occasions where I think it works. Neither do I go gooey at all the slap-happy pyrotechnic skills that many possess, but knowing what I know about Wooten's playing & musical philosophies, dammit I'll defend him lol. Si
4. Oh just everyone go and watch the damned DVD , and then listen to this India.Arie – Summer, yes its Wooten Si
5. Regardless of what you think of his slap stuff (by his own admission its just pyrotechnics), watch his tutorial DVD 'Groove Workshop', guarantee you're opinion of him will change. Si
6. Yup, I would personally steer clear. £600 would easily get you a 2nd hand newer model Fender Precision or good quality copy (Lakland etc) Si
7. Would the scratchplate not have been the 'mint-green' seeing at it's a custom colour!? Beautiful bass Si
8. I approve Very cool bass, I'd really like to gig one at some point Si
9. I think they'd actually be ok without the scratchplates, like a more 'trad' version of the old FMT basses. But yeah.....I'm not bowled over by these. Si
10. Thats cool, didn't know that! Si
11. Really aren't many of these about at all, lovely bit of history Although the pickguard is original.....really needs to be a vintage 'mint-green' guard with the (stunning) Sonic Blue, it really is my fave custom colour! Good luck Si
12. Anyone can quite happily pick this up and get a great sound. More than enough low end and plenty of gritty growly options, I just found it MUCH more useable 'in the mix' than the ODB-3. Cool Si
13. It's been discussed plenty on here and decided against, the forum is a hefty size as it is and it would simply dilute the content IMO (it's a Bass site, not a all-emcompassing guitar/music/instrument site) There's nothing to stop you registering a domain and setting up your own forum though Si
14. Yeah, Yamahas haven't completely been off the Radar....but I am a bit of a Fender fan-boy lol, can't help it . My current plan is to try heavier strings on my Jazzes, 45-105s, as I've been using 40-100s for years. Specifically on the '73 I'm gonna try flats, to try and get some deeper thump as that tends to sound thinner than the '03 (On account of the bridge pickup placement I assume). We'll see Si
15. I don't have a problem with the photos personally....its the vast array of pervy comments that I find awkward lol Beautiful bass though! Si
16. Yes please state a clear price otherwise the post will be removed. Lovely bass, good luck Si
17.
The price of the bass is a crazy deal for the sound.. these era of basses are king
But that JV isn't a P/J?! lol The Eternal P/J looks nice, I got a lovely reply from Howard, so I'm gonna try fiddling with what I have first....then if that fails, I'll look into an actual P/J bass. Si
18. I also don't feel that it's chasing sales. Leo Fender got it right....first time...and when a player wants to retain that, but also asks for some more modern features, it's down to builders like Sheldon to provide that within the context of their brand I bet he had an inbox full of emails asking for a dingwall trad p-bass before he thought about doing one. It's called supply and demand Si
19.
I have read the whole thread. In my view, the manufacturer could have created their own pick guard design but has deliberately virtually copied the Fender design. I think that is very poor, with no justification ..... other than chasing sales by riding on someone else's coat tails.
But catering to those players who want a Dingwall but also the aesthetics of a Fender doesn't work when you change the design. Dingwall have plenty of original designs and custom options that players can go for, if you're gonna put out a Fender Clone....do it well, which Sheldon no-doubt does. In any case, you play a Warwick Streamer....which is a ripped design from Spector....forced originality just for the sake of it will never take the place of proven good designs. Si
20.
Why oh why oh why is the pick guard a rip off shape of the Fender version. Have people got no imagination? For heavens sake - if you are a bass maker, show some originality.
Try reading the rest of the thread....including Sheldon's response on this page!! I also noticed Dave Swift using it, looked cool and was a very supportive sound, which is what he's all about Si
21. Played a 'VIP' New Years Eve party over in Wantage....wasn't actually any VIP's but you know how they like to market these things. Getting paid 'bare paper' to play music with my friends, have my sizable buy-out paid for by the management, then see in the new year having a silly dance with said band members....love it Si
22. I'm gonna PM him too :-D haha Si
