1.
It's such a shame that people are having so many issues with Sue Ryder basses! My first imaginary Sue Ryder P (Sonic Blue!) was simply stunning! For a cost-cutting sixty imaginary pounds, it matched every other high-end bass that I've never played in all ares such as quality, tone and cost!
I haven't got an issue with these basses. The issues I mentioned would be the basics I'd look for on any bass.
2.
Interesting. I can't understand discontinuing all ceramic cabs...a few maybe, but all? There are still plenty of us who prefer his ceramic loaded cabinets. Discontinuing the NVs?! Crazy move. That will leave the current lineup with 4 cabs. AE112, 210, 212, 410. I wonder if we are going to see other models? I think the price rise is a bit 'eeeeekkkk'...they are already quite expensive. I can see that detering buyers if it's significant. We shall see
Agree, pretty much.
3. Can't recall who played the picks parts either..sure that wasn't Haslip.
4.
Have a listen to Jimmy on Gino Vannelli album "Brother to Brother" from late 70's / early 80's. Some great solo work from Jimmy. Overall a great album with many talented musicians. Dave
Don't recall Haslip on that album by the credits, although I can recall a few parts that might sound like him.
5.
And you really thought that if it were a 'real' MM stingray for that money I would be here asking the question
As in necks/board only, but I would have doubted the authenticity myself... as MM 5 st necks/boards wouldn't likely qualify as vintage.
6.
Well - the replacement strings came...a 4 string set and a seperate B string so a bit cobbled together then. Undaunted, I took a chance and put them on and shazzam, my Shuker is singing to me once again. No intonation problems and the strings look, feel and sound like Sunbeams. The ones I sent back must have been a Friday afternoon set I guess
I strill think DR's suit me best all things considered but wasn't impressed to get a duff set recently. I suppose I could explain it away by saying not bad for nigh on 20 years and numerous sets, but they aren't cheap so this does not want to become a patttern. Looked into Newtone, I can't see any tapered so maybe custom..?? also what is a diamond and platimun.. nickel and stainless..? Prices seem ok and worth a punt
7. I must admit I read the thread as vintage 5st maple board so I thought we were talking about a MM maple board for £50. I wasn't sure MM did 5 strings early enough to quality as vintage though.
8.
I have the chance of first refusal on a Vintage Stringray 5-stringer maple board for £50. Are these any cop? For £50 is this a no-brainer? PS. I don't wish to start a cheap 'Sue Ryder' bass flame war though. JTUK take note!
Do you have pics..?
9. The point about B strings. I have a 5 on which I know the B is very good.. I wouldn't have brought it otherwise, but I have been through a few brands of strings more as an experiment on what is available, rather that the usual DR's..and I have a current set of Daddario XL's on and these are the least convincing B. I am prepared to accept this may be an indifferent batch bu was attracted by the tapered B in a certain gauge. Maybe this experiment is over, now. But, if you are considering 5's now..there is an glorious looking Overwater in FS and also a Sadowsky recently. Both looked the business
10.
Do you chaps all abandon the existing kit for the new bass? How long before you return to the others? Blademan
No, I have my 2 main basses that do different things but I am getting a favourite out of the 2 but I do need both on gigs, I think, especially as I have only had both around a year. My 3rd is now not used, and I can't see me using it soon, tbh so I am coming to terms with selling it.
11. My early 80's MM was one the best basses I've ever had but the pre can be very harsh. IIRC, the sweep is +-15db and that is a lot to abuse. Of course, you don't have to use all that Rock solid neck, lovely bass. To the OP. there is only so much you can get from listening to someone else on your set-up..and I think you may be clutching at straws if you hope that you sound so much better out front that you do close up. What are we talking here...20 mtrs..? Large sound stages..?? whole new ball game.
12. Can't help with the dating, but that looks a very good example. I seem to recall I was offered a 135 for £350 a while back.
13.
I would never buy a KSD, read some of the old threads on talkbass before you do. They tend to be junk and Ken Smith refuses to take any responsibility even though he sold them and his name is on it. They are cheap Asian imports with a big markup.
Sounds a familar sort of theme.... although I am not allowed to say such a thing.... It's ok..an in-joke on another thread, sorry.
14. I think I get it. Some people want their new bass to be a bargain and comparable to a few name brands and aren't too happy when people doubt that. Others just want a project. All fine by me
15. Good for me, always liked Haslip even with his wacky style.
16. No, no help. Can't sing well enough to have to crack it either. A few la la's and that is it fior me.
17.
That's hardly fair...none of my Fenders have had all the original parts on 6 months after getting them!
It seems like these basses are getting quite a few mods straight off..have already seen neck shims and pup threads. You'll find plenty of un-modded Fenders out there, of course...even if I have always thought the plate bridges to be a weak point, myself.
18. I thought I wouldn't be able to check into this thread until tomorrow. Bassassin I don't have any Fenders, sorry. mcnach It may have helped if I hadn't trashed people's new toys but there is no new science here. But if it makes you feel better that I go and find one and then come back to tell you it has confirmed my posts, that will be ok? Deal..!!
19.
No pick here either cool looking bass
I would say that is a pretty dull old recording in terms of the presense of the bass sound. I certainly don't recall it being that muted and it is lacking in attack. Maybe he should have used the pick
20. I am most confident in my assessment and the pics on here and some of the posts confirm it to me. 'what do you want for £60?' seems to be a theme in more than a few. I have to say from the pics here alone... not in the least interested in finding out any more. I am glad some people are satisfied with their purchase, however.
21.
JT.....Dont get so excited..... It's not a Status but it does the job, It's acceptable for Jamnights and rough gigs. Is it worth £60..........IMHO, yes. Now........take a deep breath and give it up. You are achieving precisely nothing and expanding energy in order to do so. Just my 2p.
ok I just keep coming back to this thread as I am stuck in the office waiting for a few things to complete Personally I wouldn't waste a set of strings on one myself. Yep, just read through the entire thread. I know all I need to know now.
22. Bitter, that I don't have one..?? ok.. I agree that I am lumping them in with a lot of other basses that would just not be worth even looking at either. What makes these so special..the £60:00 price tag..? The pics aren't bad but if I see one on a gig..I promise I will give it a good going over and report back. Very much doubt they'll see the light of day there though. Tell you what, I have a friend who has a car for sale...it has 4 wheels and goes, it is yours for £150..you like a bargain, don't you?
23. Ou7shined yeah, I know. LMAO I was just having fun and I, too, will be resurrecting this thread. I will also think of it when I see threads asking about this replacement pup or neck shims....just subjects off the top of my head, mind, that might end up being an issue in some distant future..or even sooner I understand the point of fads and fashions on here. Have seen them from time to time and then watch how many of these greatly lauded pieces of kit are quietly put up in FS, it does make you wonder what criteria people use to buy such things. It has been fun ..and an hey, £60 isn't bad. You'll get that back from all the work it gets you.
24. I am surprised so many regular posters don't gig. I can understand, maybe 20 plus gigging years on the trot, taking some time out and being undecided whether to continue, or needing to recharge batteries, or even if players are thin on the ground, otherwise, I don't know how people motivate themselves to keep playing without anything at the end of it.
