1. if it is only the one..and he is 'known' for it..then just answer politely and humour him and carry on about your business.
2. Can't help with the problem..might be able to lend you an amp tho..
3. 9 gigs for local bands in my town last night... that is tough. Glad I wasn't local last night.
4. Not an Ampeg fan as in you get what you get and can't alter much. The best Ampegs I've used..never owned..have been where I plugged in and didn't have to do much. These were invaribly valve jobs which are unpractical without crew IMV. The EQ has always been basic..the graphic pretty weedy and useless...but if you like its inherrent tone..and plenty do.. then you are in business. I think the tone sweep switch is ok but limited as it has presets..whereas a varible sweep would be so much better.. But then again..it is an uncomplicated amp and is probably the better for it. If you like it, you'll love it and stand by it, if not, then..you are better off moving it on because it isn't good at giving you anything else EQ-wise, IME.. My other grip would be how well built is it... but then you could apply that to loads of other marques. An amp tech I know, hates working on them..and Boogies for that matter..two iconic U.S amps, but I suspect a large part of that is because they are so heavy to load onto the bench. I'll leave out what else he has to say about them tho..
5. As far as I am concerned the best argument for high level cabs is that it is probably nearer your ear..but then that is ok only if you assume you are the only one to benefit. I set my cabs to monitor for the band as they aren't going to be best pleased if they can't hear me..it would detract from the whole on-stage thing...plus if we can't hear within 30 feet or so...what sort of mix is furtehr out front. An argument against stacking vertically if it distorts the mix in favour of your position only. IMO. Aside from it looking just plain ridiculous and being potentially unstable, but there you go..!! I really think some people approach this all from the wrong direction but without hearing their set-up this is hard to quantify...but first things first. Bass tone..a compromise between what you can use from a playability POV. Some people pick a tone on this alone..and stuff all else. Bass tone into signal. you might want to think about how all those effects melts or dilutes your tone throughout the range of the instrument.. Amp and cab.. wow..where to start..!! Some people buy the thing that makes them feel good... but it doesn't really work when lined up with the rest of the band.. basically you need to start with clearing out sound ..rather than packing it in... not easily with loud drummers with untuned kits and 4x12's..!! Band mix and stage mix. Apply all the above to the other guys you are playing with. FOH... well, you can't heart most of the time so where to start there..??? So..a minefield of compromises, so you better know your onions otherwise you are at the mercy..of just about everything So, to uncomplicate it a bit.. make sure you and the band can hear perfectly and don't get too silly with things that can cancel this out..like volume and placement etc And then go and see a load of local bands and find most of them can't work it out either.. so stress over..!!
6. oh no, sad.
7. I agree with chris about tolerance and generall excellent build but I've not done it nor needed to. I guess Dave Funk is hedging his bets when he says 'not recommened' ..and he should know.. but if you have to pair it back in order to run another cab safely, then that probably negates the reason for wanting to do it, anyway. I'd go with the slave idea..more control on the extra cab/cabs. Monster rig I must admit this extra 'thing' is why I have 2xDB210's. That fills up any stage I've used of late.
8. same old, from me. I'd never buy one of these products blind... the QC just isn't good enough, IMO, and that is without any playability or sound issues. And Fender aren't alone either.................... Send it back..cash refund and find exactly what you want in a shop or SH where you know it ticks most boxes. The dead spot..?? I'd be inclined to put of a another set of strings to see if that 'eliminates' that..but the neck pocket....?? Nnnooooooooo..!!
9. but that is what a Bass rig is on a decent sized stage..a bass monitor. I like to hear the sound from my set-up well, when I am close to it as I can set the sound for the nuances of my playing...but if you have ..for example, a turbosound monitor, you can forget what your rig tries to do. Treat it a re-enforcement and all sounds to the common good. I am quite happy to supply clean pre EQ to the board as I except him to be able to do loads more with it so as little colour from me gives him a clean enough slate. The post EQ is there for those guys that have all the gear and ..**** A quick chat beforehand is usually enough to give you an idea which way to go if you don't know the crew. Unless you have reference out front...you can't really know what he'll do though anyway..
10. It is one less signal to bleed all over everything else...and getting rid of bass is very hard to do on a signal if it is inherrently there, so you eliminate that problem at source, if poss. If you have a big bassy bass sound, then last thing you want to do is invite it everywhere else in the signal chain/mix
11. my basses..as defined by the ones I still own. Both J5's. I still have them because I love them...and they are both very different but the same, if that makes sense,. I like the variation of a theme that both compliment each other. I pick one over another on any given song depending what I am hearing at that point. There is nothing I hate about them...that is why you sell basses !!!
12. I think there is an element in truth in regards to the OP, but ruin is way too strong a word. I think it diminishes the open E the way an E would do the same to the open A. It effects it to a very tiny degree..just about noticable but not discernable in a playing context.
13. don't think it is relevant at the lower frequencies and lower volumes...but sure, if it suits someones argument..??
14. In an ideal world lots of stuff would be DI'd..but bass makes real no sense to be mic'd IMV. And if the soundman can't get a better sound than your rig, then get another soundman. You can help the process by having post and pre EQ DI.
15. Lot of cab for the money..
16. Doesn't open in IE either. Would be better if you uploaded a picure on here.
17. A friend of mine from Ashford is looking for a lighter version of his 410hlf so pics, dims and weight and I'll pass it on.
18. There are are a few self appointed 'experts' on here who can add decent contributions but they aren't definitive in the grand scheme of things by any stretch and the way things are parroted as gospel and perpetuated you'd think the whole game started and ended with them.... hmmm.. If that is your only source of info, then fine, but you really need to get out more and talk to more of the industry. There is more to it than swimming in the seas of this forum. Oh well.... Don't get me wrong, this is a nice place to be..and there are good reasons to be here but 90% of the bass players I know haven't even heard of BC... so guess what proportion of soundmen, engrs, gtrs and others players etc etc would have as well...???
19. My basses are in very good condition and I try and keep them that. I am not that worried about dinging them here and there... as I could easily get them refinshed IF it really worried me, but then I don't invite damage either. My newer amp and cabs are Mint and I intend them staying that way as long as poss.. as I can see me selling them sooner than the basses and I don't want to throw money away just because I couldn't be bothered to look after the gear sensibly and reasonably.
20. A Behringer disbeliever here. Whenever we have had to use it, ( mainly desks ) it has been average at best and we now ask if that is in the P.A spec as we will bring our own mixer. It is cheap chinese ( or whoever makes it) tat, IMO. On somethings you can get away with a cheapie piece of kit but not on vocals which should sell the whole band completely and utterly. Just not worth cost cutting here for our band, IMO.

Rack Set Ups

2 Racks of 3u each. One houses a TF550-B and a Korg Tuner and the other houses an SWR SM400 with Korg tuner. Only take one out at a time, which is the Thunderfunk, the other makes up my practice/spare rig at home. I could do with swapping out the 3u case for a shallower case..
22. I've got nice basses and I don't gravitate towards a cheapie.. If I found one that I really liked I would own it....but... so my next bass will be a commission :lol;
23. chris_b has been on the look out for one of these. PM him
24.
2 gigs this weekend with a difference. We had 2 deps, one on keys and one on drums. Our drummer sent a text on Thursday afternoon saying that he'd done his back in and couldn't make the Friday gig. Within 5 minutes of posting on Facebook i had 5 telephone numbers of drummers. The first guy i try is free for both gigs - i ask him to do it arranging to meet him for the first time at the Friday gig. Friday comes and when i get to the venue the dep drummer is already setup and going through the set list with the singer. He's really excited and seems like a nice chap. 1-2-3-4 for the first song and bang - the guys has such great feel and timing that i am in heaven. We clicked instantly and it was like playing new songs all over again . The difference it made was astonishing and made me really look forward to the Saturday party in a barn gig that was coming. Saturday night - again he's setup and ready to go. Also worked on some of the other tracks in the set that he didn't know. The gig is an absolute blinder - 3 encores - dancing all night from the off and a really funky set. So two great gigs, good money and met a fab drummer. He's taken my number and asked if i would get involved with some other projects - of course i said "yes" but heres the dilemma. Should i ask him to join the band? The current drummer is great and a super guy but his approach is very "rock" when ultimately we are a party band playing soul, funk and disco stuff. I'd forgotten how limiting this can be and have grown used to it but after the liberation this weekend with a funky drummer its going to be really hard to go back to the full on approach that our permanent drummer has. The dep also had a better appreciation of the whole song in the way that he brought it down a bit for verses, up for soloing and a real feel for his role overall. So two great gigs but left feeling like the next one is going to be an anti-climax.
Tough call. Normally I am not sentimental about these things but there is a right way of doing this.. Firstly.. you need a very good player and then decide what he brings ...personality, playing, etc etc Can you ask the other guy to leave just like that..? is it your call alone..? what do the other guys think.. who is friends with whom..? I don't agree that these things can't work as you are supposed to be a section and work together so it is a marriage of what you both have that is key. But then if the other guy is so far adrift, it would only be a question of when he gets to leave anyway. I only resent it if the guiy can't play but then again, I wouldn't stick around in that position anyway. If someone else is picking the band, then that is bad enough................ How come he has lasted so long..??
25. I wouldn't sell this in haste... think on it and then if you feel the same way in 6 months..then..maybe..!!
