It's ALL in the arrangement.
It is...and most bands can't cope or deal with it.

What SWR cab..??? If you are saying the Golaith series 410 did not produce enough lows then you are in real trouble... it is probably still one of the best 410's around.. If you are taking about their toytown budget line, then fair enough, but you get what you pay for.... The Golaith has thuderous lows IME, especially the ll..so if you want more..then you are going to have to consider 2x410.... I'd also expect 2 SWR goli 410's to far outperform an Ampeg 810... altho what stages you'd be able to run those on...????? it isn't small venue territory.and certainly not pubs..

Fair play.. We are quick to read about the bad stories so credit were credit is due.

Small and lightweight: what should I look into?
JTUK replied to 1976fenderhead's topic in Amps and Cabs
I think Gtrgtr at Epson might have had them as well.. If you are going down there...call them. I would do this anyway..as websites need and don't always get, updating. -
The drums are the key to our band going up through the gears..we can start off at practice level and we can reign it in any time we choose. Our dynamics are good, but we can be loud. He isn't quiet..and that can be good.... but you just need to consious of what is required Having said that..we don't promise anything..we do what we do..and make sure people know that. I think the band are more conscious of level that the audience.. or at least of late

Since I have moved to J5's which string up as 4-1, I can no longer use these DR sets as they are 3-2. Hi-Beams and Lo-Riders, depending if the set has T-core on the B strings. Gauges from 40-125, IIRC...so a lightish gauge set-up. These strings may have been on and off the bass a few times but greatr care was taken so they aren't kinked. These are all the older DR sets as well...and they all cleaned up easily in the past. There may be a few other makers sets in there as well and a couple of loose strings but the vast majority are bundled up into sets Free to anyone who wants to pay the postage and donate to this site.

Ken Smith Tapercore Strings SOLD!

Playing over the bridge pickup typically gives a short more abrupt sound as the string does not have as much chance to move and vibrate. That is why the neck pickup is BIG as it has more chance to move... Zing..as I understand it..is the condition of the string...and how clean/new it is. There seems to be this misconception that bass is good for a bass.. it is only up to a point. This is why big bassey cabs tend to be toneless...and is the same reason that big powerful pickups can be the same. The bass output overwhelms all other characteristics, Single coil are thinner typically and you hear the bass' inherrent sound..for good or bad.

It is the position rather than anything else that will determine how close you can get. Putting any sort of winds into the MM pup case is the easy bit.

It is the same with a lot of 'charity' events. They want popular bands to apply to play..they choose and then see who else they can get on the bill by way of FB votes. We established contact and said we would welcome a call from them so we could discuss terms. We were then told we were in the hat for the 'votes' arrangement. We said thanks but no thanks and that as they were so oversubscribed they could offer that deal to someone else. I looked at the line-up and recognised one band from the 'circuit'.. No point getting angry about it....laugh it off and get on with your life. This sort of thing is kept going as some bands will play that game... My opinion is if you don't pay the bill, then you get the event that you deserve..but there you go. We don't do free gigs.. IF the eventing staff get paid.. so for a good cause known to us, we will talk about 'things'...but only a few a year. You can spend your whole summer doing free gigs if you are that desperate..and obvously some bands might be..
I'd go further and say the preamp is junk, to my ears the bass sounds much better with the preamp bypassed and run passive. I run mine passive through an outboard Sadowsky preamp (and also my other Fenders), it really adds warmth and fatness without losing clarity.
At what point is this a MM bass then... ? as MM was all about Sadowsky sound in the J bass as far as I am concerned.
-
Of course they doubled up on gear. The Vox stuff is there for image and may have a use...he has used Messa B for ages now and they swap bass playing duties.. If you don't have Fenders on the stage then you need an amp for every gtr swap to make them sound useable
-
yep...what gig..??
-
A good demo of how a East pre..and probably others as well..can liven up a tad..as that is all it has to do..a great passive sound. the last thing you should have to do is get heavy with the controls..they have great tonal shaping possibilities..but they can also shag the sound out of sight. Quick and easy..... passive can get there as well, but you'll put your time in a lot more often, IMO.. so the Pre wins there for me. I do sometmes run the basses passive if the general conditions allow it...but the East pre is the get out of jail card as well.

Bass rigs-the bigger the better in my experience.
JTUK replied to daveparker123's topic in Amps and Cabs
The last time I used a fridge... it was getting there, but I think the cab had seen better days in its life as a rental rig. If I turned up and it was the provided rig.. I'd be pleased... not least because I could enjoy it without have to handle it...plus the onstage monitoring would also be very decent so I could ask for anything I wanted soundwise for the stage mix. None is going to put a fridge on stage in a pro enviroment that can blast the FOH....so if you have one on stage, you can enjoy it to the full -
I have never yet heard a mixed cab markbass rig that didn't sound utter shyte in the audience.
Whilst I wouldn't put it like that...for once I agree ..broadly. or to clarify...forget the single speaker type solutions in combos. I was having this conversation with a bass player mate and he went for the Epi's over the Markbass cabs to go with his Markbass amp..that says it all.. And that Epi's are pillowy..and known for it..!!! I might change my opinion if confronted by the multiple 10 stacks Markbass do. -
4x10 in standard format is more direction than a 1x15 because it has a broader cone area, so it makes the inaudibility issue worse.
2x120 stacked traditionally is the config I use over all else and won out against 115 and 2x10, 2x112 and a 410... and hearing myself on a decent size stage where I will move offline is just not an issue. I suggest that people who have problems hearing have a bigger problem with their sound in general and should look elsewhere for the solution.
Yeah. It truly is 360 for all that. I was rather astounded. I do like the promethean, I am sure it's gonna get drowned out, the guitarist are damn loud and both have 4x10's
Go for the rig that can handle the full power of the amp...and the more air you can move the better...which basically means more speaker chassis' If you have an unsubtle gtr using a fender twin, a lot of bass rigs will struggle... You like the price and sound of your choice so far... if you get get to use it is anger just to dispell any doubts then you have your winner. You need the equiv of 4x10's... and nothing less, IMO. If you sound preference is for 15's..you'll need 2...etc etc I am basically saying I can't see the promethean making it in a zillion years in your context.. and they are well regarded, but this is not their domain, IMO.

........hmmmm but middy cabs are very hard to play with and a very clean sound and attack is very unforgiving on technique. You should gear your personal monitor for the sound you want to use.. and not obliterate your sound just so you and the band can hear. If you are in this territory, it is the band themselves who all need to clean up the signlas they put out. It isn't for the bass to compromise on alone. And what happens if the FOH isn't the spec you thought it might be and you are not going through the P.A.... I try and get a tech rider on the P.A's we use but sometimes it is good to have plan B... My stage sound will double as a decent out front sound in largish halls if need be... not ideal, but it will get there with the sound I want to use... and therefore the P.A just needs to bleed me into the mix ..if he wants to play it that way. Good engrs with top kit aren't the norm in my view...they come along to a lot of gigs with a glorified band P.A with single tops and subs.. In a lot of cases...with the quality of engr on show, we do better with our own P.A for smaller gigs...which would have kick, keys and gtr in it, only....but after that we can add a sub... Classic mistake of a lot of bands using a FOH P.A..they think it is going to solve everything...and then wonder why the engr takes eons cleaning up everyones sound to be useable in a mix....and that is without any decent monitor mix.. what a game of chance that can be...!!! So..my advice for bass sound on stage..and band sound on stage..is for it to be as clean and layered as possible so everything sits well againsts everything else...and then you get the beneift of 15 minute turnrounds and a good sound if the engr is half reasonable...as you have done most of his work for him anyway...all he needs to do is control signal level..not re-EQ everything.
Well, the price is 360, which is a hefty discount and I don't want to pay any more than that really. I am finding the for sale section a little daunting. Too much go
£360..?? that is an outrageous price for the entire rig.. is that correct..?? I am no fan of GK myself but if you like the sound, then that is a done deal, as far as I am concerned. Sound apart.. whatever reservations I would have would be serverely tested at that price...
Bollocks. Cone size in and of itself only affects one function, the angle of dispersion, The larger the driver the narrower the angle. All other aspects are determined by the driver specs. Same specs, same results, no matter what the cone size.
Which is why people with 15" complain they can't hear the bass ...so have to feel it across the stage..which is NOT what you want, IMO. Of course, you hear the bass, but it can be too droney. So then, they raise it upto ear level or add another cab...when the 115 only scores from being compact anyway. It is one of the reasons why I have always said it is NOT a one cab solution but there you go. It might suit some. So, couple this with a bass emphasis from the cab you are starting too far down the hill to get anywhere. The bass lacks focus from a positional sense and it degrades even further. You might rescue it to a degree by playing with an aggressive pick style but probably not. Adding a 210 might sharpen things up a bit... but a 2x210 would do the whole job better, IMO/IME. Which is why the standard tends to 410.
-
No problem with it..but the 115 can be a bulky and heavy cab to add to a 210 with no gain at all over a 2x210 stack.. If you want to go 115 and 210..then I would stick to matched cabs, if it were me. But then I would do that with any pairing anyway. Far better to match a 115 with a 210 than a 410, IMO.

Who's had a jubilee gig cancelled because of the rain?
JTUK replied to stingrayPete1977's topic in General Discussion
Well, it didn't rain last night down here so our gig could have gone ahead...but I agree with the view that the stage must be set up properly.. and since the guy that we were talking to all along, prooved in his e-mails that he wasn't up to handling the job..so if it is amateur hour AND dodgy weather, I think we were better off out of it. It rather takes the sting out of any cancellation fee that we will put in... but I can live with that, all things considered. -
Thats not really that helpful is it? I have a few amps and a few cabs but to always run with them having your ideal world would be impossible. Im using a shuttle 3 with a little 1x10 in the house but I could blow the speaker if I wanted but at that volume its never going to happen, I run my shuttle 6.0 into the 1x12 300w cab all the time yet the head is rated at 375watts into that cab that Genz Benz supply as a combo for over a thousand pound. My Neox 2x12 is only rated at 600watts which it runs at with the 6.0 head as its a 4 ohm cab, many people have that same cab for use with streamliner 9.0's etc with no trouble at all. Who here has a rig that in each combination always has speaker wattage higher than the amps rated wattage?
me... 2x112 (600w) from 400w or 550w amps.. and 2x210 at 700w. I am not interested in running these cabs as singles and I brought them as they are easier to carry that a 212 or 410. That is the config I play with... no exceptions outside the house. I have been in too many situations where you can hear the speaker struggling..admittedly, more yesteryear than of late, but it stays with you. I have blown a 12" in a 2x112 stack.. but put that down to faulty chassis...but hey, that happens as well. The other cab coped ok...being one speaker down, so what I got out of that is that I trust and understand the single speaker volume capacity of that rig..not that I want to demo it again.. So, rule number one for me..always have more in hand that the chassis maker of cab maker specifies and way over what the amp will put out at full..which nobody really runs too anyway...hopefully.
