Tonight's second set cancelled - nobody in the pub
JTUK replied to The Dark Lord's topic in General Discussion
20 yrs ago we had one pub in town that was the best place around to gig... bands on 3 nights and a lunchtime over the weekend and it was very well supported. The circuit was pretty good as well but basically every town had its one decent gig. Now in my same town I counted 9 pub type gigs within about 5 miles radius one sat night.. so the amount is spread thinner.. This means the band as the draw is more important so that is where the focus must be and bands have to work harder. I still think the area is pretty vibrant but it has changed. You can get top $ but you'll work hard for it and deliver...same as it ever was, really. -

Finish by 12:00 if in a pub after a 9;30-10;00 start.... wont play any longer for pub money. The scene round here is pretty healthy and a very good draw will get £300 plus, but LL's really want to be sure these days. Some pubs want to pay less than £200 but they aren't the places you'll want to play. Clubs and venues start around £350 but there has to be a very good reason for taking that rate... Mostly parties start at £550 and then everyone goes for what they can get. We crap out at pubs but pig -out at parties and venues and festivals, not quite sure why that is. -
Make a chart and get a feel for how the songs go.. Make a note of the changes just in case you need them on the day. You need a method of getting the songs to stick so either listen to them lots or use a chart. No problem having a stand on stage. And don't worry about it, it sounds like a busk if he knew about the gig and has only just got you involved

Orange bass with Orange gear...??? seriously..?? Nothing wrong with the colour as such...but OD on Orange...???

I'd spend that money, but not on that bass
Thanks, considering pushing the originals a little bit harder to get gigging properly.
Shame you didn't get it...but they seem ok, so I'd maintain some sort of connection if possible. If only to be supportive and wish them well... they may remember that and think of you should there be a next time. Good connections in music are hard to find in the first place so once you do..keep them if you can. You might want to throw them a sweetener by recomending them for a gig etc etc ..

We do this on the back of the covers band which goes by the same name... so we use what set we want to and as we deem it appropriate. This way the Venue have heard of you so you get past those initial issues and nerves on their part. Most of the time, it is less about what you play, but that they know what they are going to get... Our rates will not change just because the set is original... and we may well even charge more. What you charge really depends on what the venue can afford ...and if they aren't well funded or organised they will not pay much regardless of what you end up playing.

nope, they should be dual purpose

Fight.... I'm backing MM20 over this not that I know.. A few more will be along soon as they will have new or older cabs..I'd have thought.
I wouldn't want to do anything other than what I do. But many's the time I've considered a thread titled. Original Material Bands. What's the bloody point? At least most tribute bands seem to enjoy themselves and get gigs.....
ooooooooooohhhhh pithy...

Yep..assuming you want this much 'power' and don't mind the load-in.. You need to be running 1 amp at 2ohms as that will be the load of 4x8ohms or you run the Ashdown into 2 cabs =4ohms and then slave off to another amp that can do 4ohms..which is a pretty default load for all amps, IMO.. Wouldn't mess around rewiring tbh..
I'm going to write a tribute novel.... 'In a hole in the ground there lived a Boggit. Not a rotton, muddy, wet hole full of the ends of caterpillars and a mouldy smell, nor yet a arid, empty, dusty hole with nothing in it to lie down on or to drink: This was a Boggit hole and that means luxury. It had a square door like a cupboard, painted yellow, with a shiny, green copper knob on the side. THe door opened onto a wide, long hallway with half-panelled walls and floorboards provided with sturdy chairs and one peg for the Boggit's hat and coat - the Boggit hated visitors'. You wouldn't would you?
Have you upped the tablets today..?

Using Bass cabs as a P.A. - anyone done it? (Barefaced in particular)
JTUK replied to Jesso's topic in Amps and Cabs
I'd suggest it would be a stop gap effort and you'd only get away with it once or twice. Depends how much they are paying for the wedding DJ spot..if it is next to nothing then you haven't got much to live up to, if it is decent money, then do the job properly. Depends what the P.A is capable of as well.. -

Try it.....if they sound ok then you get to stay late and pack up last. -
Bilbao? Tell me, John - is that a typo or a tribute to Bilbo?
ha ha Pete, I would like to say phone predictive text....but I quite like the Bilbao poster
If you’re switching from a 410 to a 210 you’ll probably find the 1 cab won’t be loud enough. 2 210 cabs will give you 99% of what a 410 gives without the heavy lifting. For loud gigs I use 2 210's and the tone and volume is great. I mostly use 2 112 cabs though. I prefer the 210's but the 112's weigh even less. It’s a compromise I’m happy to make.
and this...
I use a 210 for small gigs and it copes really well. It doesn't generate the same amount of air pressure behind you as much as a 410 obviously and placing the cab on the stage whereby you can hear yourself clearly is a bit tricky. If you play with a drummer that doesn't hit that hard then a 210 will do the trick. I play in two bands and the 210 is ample for one band and the 410 has to come out for the other as that drummer strikes with a heck of a lot more gusto and everyone else in the band responds by turning up louder, so the 210 gets swamped a bit. Audio and video playback is useful and something that you should use as a learning tool just to see where you are and where/if you can improve on apsects. Case in point..recently did a bands recording for them on a big show and I would think they will be quite crest-fallen when they hear the tape. Or they ought to be and have a post mortem over it..IMO.
-
I would indeed have to come and see you to see if that is true. It isn't beyond covers bands by any means, but probably beyond more than a fair few... IME.
-
I think I'd tend to side with Bilbao and SteveK on the expression in music against just the notes. This is the difference in covers bands who get the notes right but nothing much else...it is playing by numbers. I want to see a band really doing it..with a piece of the player in there adding or maybe even taking the song/track on a bit...this defines good and not so good musos IMV.. and the version is more honest, IMO... Not that it is the be-all and end-all...and I can enjoy a night of bland covers or tributes easily enough, it is just that I think the band might be missing a trick.. but then also, the band will not realise they are missing that trick. ...oh well. not the end of the world, but I know what I would prefer

It is all work but they will live or die on how good they are...as anyone will be.. I play in a tribute band... but we are a multi tribute act band I don't have an opinion either way..if the act are good, I can like them. Would I do it myself..?? not really.
