Youtube.... Don't care about the key, just get the song working in my head..and pref from a live version. Everything else is fixed when we play it It might help if we are all playing the same version... or make it easier, but you know how you are going to play it within a few bars...and who hasn't listened to it

I am guesing you'll need a horn... if not then a 212 over a 15. 210 not enough for loud bands.
I've used a 30watt 1x12 combo for backline at a loud gig with PA support & a shed building drummer & had no trouble with on stage volume. It's about placement & EQing. Don't expect miracles, but a 1x10 combo would be ample for monitoring.
I can't see this at all. 30watts and a shed-builder..?? I can't see 30 watts getting past the drummer and certainly not a loud drumer so no one else will be able to hear and play to you. This does not augur well for a playing band. You may just about get away with it...in a fashion..if you are squeezed into a corner but 30 watts..?? There is nothing you can do to EQ more watts out of that...you may be able to run the amp so bass light..but why would you play with that...?? the sound would be awful, or at best functional...but as for the band playing to it..? It would not be my way of approaching playing in a band .. but if you can make it work, good luck.

are there any super bands with poor bass players?

Have to say that MA solo above should never have gotten off the cutting floor...esp when you get EVH's a few songs on. Really... as far as solos go... and I understand the showbizz thing...a little bit.. but know your limits. It is awful... and sounds like he had done a few bottles of the stuff... -
Did you get anywhere with that Venue I suggested, Pete..??

I'll be taking an X5 down to the alpes for a road trip.. I'll expect 35mpg from a useful 30D engine which will cope with the autoroutes very well and the snow is taken care of with the Vredsteins which we can run as an all year tyre. If not, we will swap them back for summer tyres. People laugh at Chelsea tractors but mostly they are all you need unless you spend a LOT of times in fields., IMO. We've done the trip in RRovers, Tourags, Disco and the X5 ( and the NIssans, Toyotas, Legacy and Outbacks etc etc ) ... they are did well, but the one thing you don't want is to drive 1000km in a Land Rover..by comparison, on autoroutes. It is not that the drive is painful..but it doesn't have to be that bad as there are more apppropriate choices...

If the drummer prefers this...he must play pretty light..? What do the other guys hear..?
-
What about the useable frequency range..? 2k Hz less..??

Take a seat... Anyone who uses them will likely post... and anyone who doesn't will have their own reasons. The best thing you can say is that there is normally a free demo facility or 30 day return so you really can try before you buy..

Geography an issue...?? -
Marginal, IMO, since the P.A you have is for pubs and vocals only, pretty much. If you want to pursue your idea then you will need a bigger P.A and then you have to work out if it is all worth it.with the set-up and carry..which is why most don't go down that route. It is not a given that a mix out front is going to better than a backline mix. It should be, but it often isn't.

Hmmm ... You'd think if you we're going to have a solo feature in the same show as EVH... who is simply a gtr genius, IMO, then you should come prepared with your A game ... And if people who know the guys playing better think that is his A game then I think it is fair to comment on it. I would hope in the early days he worked harder...!!!!! Still. He must have made a decent $ so I doubt he cares -
All those slagging offf Michael Anthony are wide of the mark . The guy is a very capable player . If you listen to the early VH albums I really don't see how anyone could fault him . I can personally vouch for him , having heard him play on a one- to -one level , and he can do a very good JPJ and John Entwistle impersonation when the mood takes him .
-
Think I used the 210 Neo version and I'd say it was average .... 600w..?? obviously not thru the 210's... and an ext cab would no doubt improve it in terms of volume but I wasn't a fan of the sound so wouldn't nother. Having said, I am not an Ampeg fan anyway... but if you like them, I can see the value of a lightweight combo and ext cab to get something like 600w. I can think of far better ways to go about it tho. Maybe I am not the person to ask as I don't rate most of their other amps, either. SVT11 pro, SVT 3 ...etc
Listen to the original demo of "Heart of Glass", it's bloody awful. All of them play horrifically...
was he on it..?? never knew why he was kicked out/left? Not that I follow them that closely, just that he was on the first proper gig I went to... -

RE Michael Anthony..??? Anyone who thinks they can share a solo spot with EVH must have SERIOUS chops or a SERIOUS ego.. and the JD bass slot is just plain deluded After DLR and EVH...did they really need that guy..?? Agree with right time, right place sentiment. -

Why would you waste your time with people like this..... I think they are doing you a favour by putting this upfront at an early stage.. Saves so much hassle not getting involved
Interesting! When I had my old TE stack, I far preferred the sound from the 1518 than the 1048!! I liked 15s - but that was before I discovered properly made cabs, in which the size of the speaker is only one of the variables, and even then not the most important one!
People KEEP saying this, but I don't hear it so I don't believe it. I must agree that I wouldn't want a 10 without a horn so am certainly not going to go for a 15 without one but you need a cab to do the range that you want to work with... and I've used 15's 12's and 10's with horns and the 12 is not the compromise I'd want..let along a 15... For me..and I think I have played around with a lot.... there is nothing that multiple 10's can't do for bass gtr... I'll use twin 12's for the compact carry but they don't bite as well. I see no point in playing higher fills if the cabs can't project it.. and I want that higher projection. out there... not buried. That is what I want from a cab...
-
That's because you don't have ears in your ankles. The cure? Tilt the cab back.
Doesn't really sort the problem though, does it...? All that does is enable the user to hear what he is playing... doesn't help it out front in the mix.. If the sound is muffled or doesn't come through, relatively close, it is pure luck that it might work when you have no ears outfront to regulate it further.

In terms of styling the Japs get it so wrong 99% of the time, but every now and then they luck out IMV.. The Germans do the top end really well where everything JUST IS.....and they have fine engines.. but the Japs lose nothing to them in terms of engineering with the Germans just shading it in the overall package. IMO. So sure, a Jap car isn't a German car but it probably beats everything else bar the finest.. RE 4x4 and AWD, most Chelsea tractors can make a decent stab at a few tricky driving issues, but they are raod going cars which are an all round joy to drive.... and you would have to be a saint to put up with one or two REAL 4x4's on the road for any lenght of time. Pick your compromise motoring style..

Was talking about this in the local muso shop. You try playing straight 8's all night like a metronome... sometimes it is easier to go off and do something else playing-wise than nail the part each and every night. Sure the guy might not get another gig, but he has that one pretty much down. I think picks do straight 8's very well... and you'll be surprised how often fingers lose it. FWIW, I think Adam C does a good job... but again, will he get another gig..?? Guess that is not a problem... -

I would pick players that I could get along with over my mates, if the other guy was a better player for that band. And this would apply some way up the line as well. Of course, you avoid arseholes, but best players trump best mates everytime. As long as the relationship was on a professional footing. of course. Even mates get to you over some little things...and it can wreck friendships.. But then, I never see bands as loong term things... they have a finite life and you move on. -
Thing is, IMO... do you need an out and out 4x4 or something that is decent? 4x4/AWD can be a lot of extra weight which isn't good on running costs. I like the Audi version of the Toerag.. and seems bigger that usual. But the Mondeos and Insignias are huge inside, esp the estates. For a driving car, I'd go for a larger engined BMW or Audi est..if you can't get your head around Japanese but I honestly would not put a high spec Legacy much behind the higher end German cars. Check out a Spec B. But for the sheer hell of it.. The Porsche sounds good... but would you wreck it with band gear..??
Think personality has to play a major part in selecting any musician for a band. Maybe he's just a nice guy. ? Dave
When you start it does. Some bass players are pretty ropey from a technical POV, but in the case of someone like MaCartney, they were all average and learnt together and the sum of the parts they brought together was pretty soon apparent 4-5 years down the line.. Some people bring bass playing skills... but there are plenty of them about..others bring something else.. and in terms of Walters and Macartney, for example. their contributions were definitive and without them...??
