1. Thanks guys, feeling more confident that this will work for us in a smallish pub. Will need to go from there to see how viable it is so will report back. EV seem to be doing good stuff as the ELX is rated close to QSC sound-wise... at a good few hundred £'s less per unit, I think, Don't know about EXT range. Depends if I want it just for my band..or whether I want to go Pro sound...which is an option/opportunity and then things like Nexo and D&B come into it at S/H prices. Pro Spec riders, sub hire etc might make sense for not so much more money...but the step up in sound is a nice bonus.. I am not sure there is much scope for hiring out Elements type stuff round here..???
2. No problems with the QSC..more problems with them being available for every gig and this is one of them. We wouldn't change by choice but have to contemplate it. I have been looking at options to the QSC KW's and we think they are a better cab than the K12's. Other cabs that have come into the equation and are regarded or rated as comparable to K12's appear to be Yamaha DSR112, JBL 612's and the EV ELX112. and I think the DSR and ELX are wooden boxes. In my research, I think the QSC kit is decent quality and the warranty is good but then the kit also seems pretty reliable so confidence in the brand all round is high and regarded. How the other brands compare in that regard, I am less sure...the kit seems newer as well, so ..?? We also haven't been that knocked out with the K subs so we went elsewhere, but I think the K series P.A and subs sets a good standard for an earning and stable function band if they feel able to commit £3k or so. The KW12's alone are pretty decent in a pub and small hall for us and we run full keys, gtr and kick thru them and we aren't quiet by any means.... I don't say that as a badge of pride as we are just too loud, but the point is the KW12 keep up and produce and I think the K12's would do the same...we just think the KW12 sound the better of the pr.
3. I have many spare power leads and carry 13 amp and 5 amps as spares for them. I also have a Maplins type special fuse box with just about everything in it should the amps fuse go. But you should want to ask why a fuse would go in the first place. As for spare leads...every IT dept has a gazillion of them..
4. It is going to cost you to sort an alternative.... studio or shop, so you have to make up your mind what you are prepared to do.
5. Hmm... beautiful day, rammed pub for a party and we aired 4 new tracks ( 1 an original ) after minimal prep, and went down very well. But.. I think we are entering a crucial time and we have lost the 'chemistry' that made us so strong...
6. ok, thanks. I will see how this Elements system works. I am hoping the system has the 8 mini speakers per side as that would rate 300watts ...if it only has 4 then I am not confident it will work or be man enough. I best check ... fortunately, the user/system has 8 subs, so I guess we can pair up the tops and run 4 if we need to use more.. I think we are going down this route as it was the first one offered... We also have a Nexo PS10 and LS600 rig to try..and I am really keen to hear that.
7. Ok, thanks. At least that gives me some confidence that it will make it through the gig and be loud enough. Will give it a go and report back.
8. Faversham is lively and you'd do ok at the Hop festival... Not sure if you HAVE to have a presence in the town before then ( to get on the stages ) and you might need to grace a few pubs beforehand... depends how you handle that.. Have a look at this http://www.playinginfaversham.com/ for a few ideas.
9. Unless you make it an integral part of the song..... and you can get it to underpin the song..which isn't so easy, I generally have a 2 bar rule for fills...anything else gets into w***ing territory. Mark King gets a lot of flak but you could also blame people like Flea. Like most things, if you haven't got anything to say, then just...don't But that isn't going to work
10. To the OP... not a whole lot if you can't hear why you need one. It sounds like a swap for a swaps sake.... To play a 5 I think you need to be hearing lines already and the possibilities otherwise you have a 4 which happens to have an extra string...and never use it..
11. No..............
12. I think rosta is pretty important as a) you know what certain bands work for, and therefore you know the pubs pay model, and b,) good rosta maintains passing trade, as people will come on spec and give new bands the benefit of the doubt as they assume they are of a certain standard.
13. Things I look for are playing area...and if they are serious about the music they put on, so I will check out the rosta and also whether it is the sort of place we'd invite people to... If they fail on any of that criteria, we aren't going to play there..
14. It is..and you can see it in a lot of players. I recently saw a Gtr I knew from a decent grundge band and he makes a good fist of that... but change the emphasise of what to play and the songs in another band..even buskers like Sweet home, and Free world etc etc and he was not the same player.. You'd think the standards would be easier than the grunge, and he had keys to help in the standards, and still he was a fish out of water. He hadn't played out of his comfort zone too much, ..that was pretty plain.
15. Not come across the RCF HD.... so thanks...will have a look. Things move on quite quickly so the ELX is still in the frame, but might need to decide/consider if hiring these out is an option and if so, I think I need to get something that fills a market. So... passive have come in to the equation as has a ramp up in spec. Nexo, D&B, pro RCF, JBL and EV cabs for corporate hire ( as opposed to pub trade and therefore no one runs active much, there ) looks a better bet, ...???
16. Has anyone tried out an HK Elements system? I haven't seen it but we are borrowing it from a company who have 8 subs, so god knows what they are using it for, if a system with a pr of subs and the towers is rated at 2400watts and suitable for large clubs and small open air.. We plan to run the 2 subs and 2 towers for a small pub. We are going to change our P.A or need alternatives and this has presented itself. So, the question is.... can this REALLY cope with a loud band..? maybe gtr and key bleeds will be used at the 1st outing, so not worked really hard ( on paper ) apart from getting in front of the pokey backline and drums. This is the type of spec http://www.e-av.co.uk/pa-speakers/hk-audio-elements-smart-base-portable-pa-system?gclid=CNLxv_idj70CFQkUwwodHzAAQw Any opinions? TIA.
17. Good luck... when you back down my way..???
18. Put the songs up and play them.... if they work, no one will really complain, IME. The problem comes when no one is listening to whatever you play... There are crappy originals and crappy covers bands and nothing is really going to save them.... Having said that, you aren't going to get out of pubs if you are playing AC/DC and Thin Lizzy all night. You might do the odd biker show etc but it will be hard to break ..say, £500 unless you include stuff that the market wants. And for parties and functions people will listen but they really want to get up and dance. Depends what you want.............
19.
That's a thoroughly decent thing to do, I commend you.
indeed, ...nice offer, well done.
20. Not sure you have defined 'better' with the examples you have used. For me, I think you need to be looking at £1000 s/h to be in good bass territory and even then it isn't a rock solid garauntee. That isn't to say you can't luck out with £750 or be out of luck with £1500 spent, but the trick is to know what you are looking for and what you can do with the bass and therefore take the luck out it to quite a degree. There are VERY few basses I would buy blind, tbh...
21. Zoom are good for sound, we've found but we have lucked out on a few HD cams are well. If the band has a pretty good mix, you just need bass pickup which isn't impossible by any means on basic recordings but if your mix is average, then you are fighting a losing battle.
22. Since the sound of the band is in evceryone's interest, then every one chips in to make the job easier. The load in and set up means cable runs are first and that dictates where everyone plays. The Gtr runs the board but once we have EQ...we don't need to do too much, since we can't really anyway so it is all about levels. The Vox are always set high against the band and we try and sit on the levels. We only really get into blowing the mix territory at the end of the show, tbh..if that. We quote for P.A at every gig and pay for it..( along with lights and Admin ) If the budget allows, we quote seperately for egnrs for sound and light and then they bring their kit. We have a few companies that we will work with, and a few we wont ask back. Our P.A is pretty good so we would rather haul that than quite a few small engr ones, tbh We have found it only really worth hiring...generally..if the kit is on the EAW, Martin type standard. Some HK kit is ok if they have more cabs.
23. Yep... just do it. What is the worst that can happen?? It doesn't work and you split up or get asked to leave..? The advantage of your age is that you realise that some things in life are just more important, so although you can really commit, you are also more realistic. Always try and play with better players...
24. There is only one thing better than a well filled diary and that is the quality of that work within that well filled diary.... and we would probably all vote ourselves more money, So, providing you are happy with all that, then I can see why bands wouldn't want to work harder... so, stick with what works. We always says that pubs are too much work for the money, which they are, IMV...and some of the bands members would rather work duo's and dreary functions--which is our current bone of contention-- whereas I am looking for a good gig..and some pubs can qualify for that. The trick is to get function type money out a basically pub set, at decent venues.
25. Thanks for that..... The gig is in the Cotswolds and september so plenty of time, but last time we travelled that way, we ended up nigh in Staffordshire so maybe I should get the post code first We could haul one up from Kent but that could get a bit silly with fuel exes..
