I am actually contemplating another unit and I know who I would ask to be part of it, but the transient nature of the unit is not going to do as well as my main band as they wouldn't be able to gear up to the better gig well enough. This would be purely a time thing as all the players would be choosen ...but they will ALL be busy so getting them all together at one point would be very fraught and nigh on impossible, very often. This means a LOT of work to get to decent gigs beyond the pub rate, which is another bone of contention. How can I drag these people off a gig for pub money? They may love the idea but they will be committed elsewhere so you can't have a rehearsed outfit .. no doubt the band will have talent and be able to do good gigs but it will basically be a jamming band and there is a limit to how far that can go in practical terms. I have 2 of each player in mind but long term planning just can't happen so by the very nature you will struggle to get beyond the pub thing. This doesn't make it unworthwhile, but it makes it a dep unit flying by the skin on its teeth and I don't think there is enough mileage in it for the effort. I still have it in mind to do.... I am just realistic to think that these people might honestly take a booking with me, but with get a last minute 'better' gig and it will be an admin excercise/nightmare. I don't need that hassle so would want more money out of it than the gig would pay and then the guys would be on wages ... That can lead to problems when the gig isn't then equal share. These guys run their own 'careers' so they know the score. I am sure it is a very good idea, would be great fun, by and large, but ultimately limited in how far the band can go. It wouldn't be my main band...unless it REALLY took off, and it wouldn't be anyone elses either so there would always be 'better' gigs to battle with. For example, sat night gigs would never ever be a starter... I am compiling the CD tho as the material to work from...

No, I have to choose what gigs to do as I am more picky these days. I need a motivation so it is either a very nice gig to do... ( not a given, IMO ) or it pays well, but even then, I have to fancy it. I don't stress over it, it is just the way it is and I've burnt out before so this is my way of trying to stop myself from getting jaded again.

You wont be saying that when you find all the new gear you get GAS for...

I don't think how many is all that important, it is what you do with them that is. could I handle more than 1 atm..? not with the same level of commitment and I'd soon get into trouble with the diary and with that it would cause quite a problem, so one is a big deal and anything else is decidely 2nd place. Would the other bands accept or like that..?? only if their own commitments were low key. They'd find pretty soon that I'd be 'out' more often than not and would ask me to make a choice. So, 1 regular band and the rest are deps, and the problem with deps is that people give up calling if you can't do a few gigs. They get someone else...

I see a visit is on the cards.

There you go...that ^ explains a lot. Ashdown doesn't work for me and Ampeg would be my choice out of those two. Having said that, I used a Ashdown NEO 210 combo and it perform well so maybe you need to know your way around the various models to find what you want. I don't get why companies add to the confusion with multiple product lines... as generalisations like Ashdown is crap might not apply to whole range, but it only takes one bad cab to doom quite a product range..???

That is what I mean, Aguilar say the DB750 is 43lbs... !!! I would ask, on what planet? Don't understand Eden being muffled myself... as it was often THE show amp for funk guys. But if you didn't like them, you didn't like them. I wouldn't be pairing them up with an Ampeg cab myself tho. Eden amps=quality, IMO.. Eden cabs =quality AND heavy, but no heavier than Ampeg ceramics, IMO. I do make the distinction about early U.S Eden tho with my comments. I don't regard Eden as the same maker these days...so early U.S only.
-
Space is an issue with us.... will see how negotiations go, but sounds like a nice type of place to play.
-
Ha ha ..and my DB is 43ibs...which makes me a chinaman I never had to lift the 400 but I would certainly try and pick it up to see is their weight spec is anywhere near ball park.. I'd say the 400 is light years better than the pro 3 which is not one thing or another IMO, Not sure about the SVT ll being 70lbs either..I recall that being a 2 man lift to get it on top of a fridge.. I think the point being made is that you need to reconcile the weight of these things yourself. I'd also research reliability patterns for the Boogie 400. My amp tech hates them ...and the SVT ll, as it happens.. as they are too heavy to lift and he says they aren't made too well... but I think he sees more gtr versions than bass. He isn't against vavle amps at all tho as he grew up in the Marshal heyday... If weight comes in as a factor, I'd consider vintage ( 90's and U.S made ) Eden which is quality kit for dirt cheap money. IMO.
If I had the spare money to, the Ashdown cabs would be gone quicker than a quick thing leaving somewhere very quickly hahaha but for now, I'm stuck with them :-s
Well, don't compound this by going down the Ashdown route again. Go for an amp that works well outside of your current cabs since you know they are on limited time anyway. I am a bit confused on your tone goals, so maybe post whose sound you like and are trying to get after. I have a feeling that GK will suit you... and you should aim for the 210 and 115 set-up once you have sorted your amp. I don't rate 15's myself but they may just set your stack up a bit higher than 2x210's...and the 210 should 'dominate' it, to your ears.
-
I've used them from time to time a while... never could afford or justify one though. Normally always came with the 1516 cab which combined was a classic rig to rival the best SVT's..in fact the Boogie cab shaded it for me. Both plug and play amps...turn them up..twiddle a tad and you're there. There is something about the big amps..and I'd say the DB750 series is the only other amp that beats it, IME.

Thanks, we haven't gone for a date yet, but have been recommended to the pub and I've looked at the current rosta and I know of a couple of the bands so it might suit us. Will let you know if it pans out.

Stage 1 of the process complete. Amp for this rig sorted. Next up is the cab sale. I have a gig rig to cover that... Can't decide what custom cover I want... think white looks FAB...but maybe not the most practical... I've decided I can go class D in that I have that amp option but I want the ceramic S112 with a horn..x 2.

Sell... it is a working tool, that isn't..er...working. Put the money by and ad a bit to it for when you get GAS for something else
My first proper amp was a Laney combo. I would get the Peavey.
I used a PV combo and the best I could say out it would be it took some abuse and some... but then it sounded like it was always on the verge of blowing up anyway..and never did, which was its one redeeming feature. For the money, I'd go PV..but would also say, you need to save some more so as to spend well, not twice..

F************************* we got caught out with that last year.... Thanks for the heads-up..
-
Can anyone tell me what sort of venue this is? Want to know what sort of crowd they get, and how much space... and anything else you think is relevant, TIA...
-
Ok...got that, so past Blenheim then. Same route as last year when we worked with their friends a bit further north. Many thanks. Hope you get the gig sorted.
-
yep..sounds like it. I can get to Oxford in about 90 mins in traffic good but it is the faff north that rankles ?? Was thinking a cut across from M40 might work but the roads seem small...

But I don't want the new U2 album on my phone :-(
seriously JT? i think opinion is very firmly divided on this one and personally my take on it is 'how f***ing dare they' judging by the reaction on soshal meeja seems like they are going to alienate as many fans as they might attract - and personally i hope that the net effect is the former hrrmmmph
I agree entirely.... that is why is is such a great move from their POV.. You don't get a choice whether you want the product and if FF is right, they (U2) get paid a mint.. But, ruddy f***** cheek of it. And I hope they both get a bloody kicking from it -
Well according to this it seems more like an Apple initiative, for which they gave U2 $100m. Blimey. http://www.independe...m-30576404.html
Blimey indeed.... Bonio can afford to feed a few countries with that...or pay a few tax bills..?? -
Confused... how do they determine £35...? is that £35 per man... per how many in the band.? That is £140 for a 4 piece...? Yep..best local. I have to travel to Oxford this weekend and am NOT looking forward to the gig. Enstone... wherever that is..??

Great marketing move from U2... wonder how much that cost them..??? My phone is music free unless I youtube it. That is not what I want from it, tbh.
