Yes are playing venues like westcliffe on sea pavilion nowadays aren't they ? Hmmm
I still think they'd do ok at those sort of gigs. Hopefully, they don't need to make a huge living so just need these top-up gigs. No one has a devine right to be popular all the time. They have just down-scaled. I'd guess most bands with a back catalogue can keep busy enough. 10cc, Toyah, Ten Years After ( before AL died ) all have cropped up on bills and the list must be endless.... Europe is full of yesteryear type festivals, as is Rewind. Etc etc etc ...........

I'd use specific FB groups and then be pretty explicit in the detail. FB is a good networking tool, but there is also no substitute for people knowing that you are out there looking. It helps if you get out and about and chat to people. I tend to have a band aim or goal... like a groove band, and then pick out the guys that can do that sort of thing. If Prog is your thing then find guys who gravitate to wards that....whihc tends to be most of them, IME I wouldn't use those websites mentioned until I had tracked down a list of names and I wanted to see their work...and then I'd be into Youtube territory anyway.

I'd say 15's and no tweeters are asking for trouble but I doubt that is a universal view.. However, you are where you are... I'd put another cab with that amp and see if you got more top end...EQ on the amp notwithstanding. A lot of older 15's can be pretty wooly anyway.
-
Yep, exactly that...don't push it. I think you could get into trouble in a loud band and if you get that gig, add another cab. But if you aren't loud, you'll be fine. Also, bare in mind that your volumes on your dials doesn't mean much. They use to say that Marshals were as loud as they were going to get anywhere from 4-5 to 11 on the dial... Use your ears.. which is a good thing to do with every rig, IMO.

Got about a minute in... The whole point of playing this at a party gig is for the groove of the original and if you can get it to work, it is good fun. It is a total arse otherwise, IMO.. Not a fan of this, tbh...

Where is the bass rig sweet spot for standing on stage.
JTUK replied to jazzyvee's topic in General Discussion
What are you using..?? There is a reason why people have big stacks on bigger stages. I tend to ask about the stage size and we have a min size if people have to build/ship them in. The smallest is 24ft by 16ft and then it depends on the size of the room/marquee and the spec of the monitoring. Altho a stage rider is one thing, you have to be reasonable about who and how they comply. Basically I reserach the gig as to waht rig I take along...I find I am better servered looking after my end rather than trusting to luck. My aim is to fill the stage so the band can hear me and I can hear them from our own kit.. and then on stage monitoring can fill the rest. This upscales and downscales most gigs, IME. My sweet spot will be about 2mtr away but I am hearing it as far as my 6mtr lead will take me. -
I don't accept absolutes like 400w into a cab... as there isn't a practical way of measuring it. Same as an amp being driven three quarters of the way up on the dial... What does that equate to..??? so I tend to use my ears to gear when a cab is struggling and because I had such crap gear when I started, I always like to have some headroom left in cabs... So...I think you'll be find as long as you aren't getting into fights with shed bulders and shredders and for most pub gigs, I'd expect the PF series to do well enough. I prefer the PF amp to the SVT 3 and the PF15 was nice warm sounding. Whether it has enough bite I'll never know but the core sound is there, IMO.
-
I think the 800 amp into a 8ohms cab will 'choke' the amp down to around 500w... so that is manageable for the cab. Not ideal but the PF500 doesn't sell itself so you must be aware of over driving. Ampeg ...like a lot of other cab makers don't see the point of overs-speccing their drivers from a power handling POV so you just need to make sure you don't drive the cab hard. I hope you don't plan to use effects in this situation as that can mask a chassis that is struggling. Sound-wise, I liked the sound from a PF500 and PF15 in the shop... and I think a PF500 and Ampeg PF can would work as a match-up, but with the known issues published here, who would take that chance..?? The only thing I'd say is, my demo in a shop is a world away from a lIve gig, sound-wise but how will you ever know unless you gig it..

Genesis: Together and Apart (BBC Documentary).
JTUK replied to namefail's topic in General Discussion
Good to see them all sitting round the table... as opposed to detached 'interviews' on their own... but you could see why they split up, just from those little things.. -
Just get white. My WKZ guitar head and 4x12 are white and they're not looking too shabby considering the gigs they did in Scandal and live n kickin. Get a good set of covers and don't put your beer on them!! Now there's no smoking in pubs they won't go yellow. Where is bass gear?
Not helping BassGear is Twyford, so just under 2 hrs from me.. but you'll spend two hrs minimum in there so worth it.
-
Failing that...can take trip up to BassGear when they have stock
-
Sure you can, M. I need to sell the Bergs first..or that was the plan. oh.... and decideing what covering I wanted... Love the white cabs but can't get my head round the practicalities...
I'm looking to get some better cabs later this year / early next year and would really like to hear these. Any plans to come down London way ?
Bassgear, ..???

Me, I like the LPB Jazz types.... glorious colour and I think they have a few other great colours as well. I don't want a bass with humbuckers though these days so the DJ looked a good fit

I don't think he plays bass gtr but when you can put down a keyb bass part like he can...why would you?
What was wrong with the Lakky?..................
It was a DJ5 and I went to see 3 basses. The Lakland was pretty good, passive and nice enough but the Sei was up for a second hand price and miles better...as you would expect, but there was only a £200-300 price difference, IIRC, and so a no brainer. I brought the Sei and it was my friend who pointed out the neck pocket issue with the Lakland but I didn't think it was that bad. I think I would have walked away from a sale had they not had a Sei there at the time but only because the Lakland didn't entirely convince as a general bass, as opposed to the pocket issue. Would I buy one for £700 now...??? hmm... wont say 'never' ( that DJ5 wasn't £700 though ) The Sei was a great buy and I still use it a lot.
-
I'd say a Line6 150/300 combo was worth a look for the money. The have a few amp models included which you can use as a pre set sound and still EQ some more. A lot of kit for the money, less than £500 for the 300w 15" version.

Love it.... great parts from N Watts as well.

I guess it is.... I have no interest in running around like a loon especially when I see my job as holding things down when all hell is breaking loose.. We are quite a static bunch but we've also been told we are quite exciting to watch.. Whether they meant the gig was exciting because of the way we played I don't know but I'd rather it that way than try and impress by jumping around trying to kid people it all works. You know how you are going down...........and a big cheer after the first number is nice.... before you have warmed up your posing moves....
-
I went to check out a Lakland and brought a Sei... no surprises there but the Lakland I passed on, I recommended to a friend who brought and sent it straight back. He also had big issues with MM as well, and I don't think they are the company they were, but there you go. If you are talking about production made basses, a few dogs are going to slip thru ...if only because of the numbers that they make. This is why, IME, you very very rarely buy unseen and played.... and I would exempt VERY few makers from that mantra. But that is me...........

Seen a couple of American deluxe Jazzes recently and they have been very very nice. I'd have one if I found the right one..mainly cosmetic detail, and I think these should be the basses that Fender call their core line-up. Not that knocked out with the rest of the range upto the American Deluxe ... I see them, and generally I know straight away whether they'll be what I'm after, but I understand why a huge corporation has a very big range of models, but......................

A lot of bass players are looking for more than just volume now. They want the sound AND volume and winding something up as loud as poss to get thru a mix... with little or no ability to shape that sound as you are maxxed up is why people look at 350w in 8 type amps. If gtrs are willing to drive smaller combos hard, ...and even old Boogies etc got very loud, then that bodes well for the band because they are looking and thinking about the band sound rather than their own sound and everyone else having to fit with it...or not, as it invaribly turned out
-
I would be pretty sceptical and a 210 could really do a very good job at volume. I think you might, just might, get there in terms of volume, but it would be pretty weak and by that, it might sound ok close up, but it wouldn't be supporting the band against the loud drums and loud gtrs, IMO. I guess it depends what we all mean by loud but a typical 210 would be 350/400 and that is a hard shift against loud drums and gtrs. I think there is a world of difference between volume and being THERE...
