Well, somethings aren't my thing, be that genre or types of playing, and I like what I like and I think I know a bit ...so I guess that may come across as snobby... I guess I just go with my version of good/excellence/bad/poor etc etc .. It is not all bad tho... it pushes your on... if that is what you want to do.

I have at least two rigs anyway....so depends which one was stolen. I'd replace my DB rig with same...as I haven't used anything better. and my B rig would be another TH500 amp but probably thru TKS cabs rather thru Bergs....but I'd also demo CN112's against them..assuming I had the money to cover the cost of 2xCN112's from the pay-out. Bass-wise, I'd get the same.. or would probablycommision my own specs with Martin P/Sei. I would also check out what Celinders and AC's were about at the time...

Five String Jazz Basses talk to me?! NOW A NBD THREAD !!!!!

I wouldn't rush it... you need to get the right one. As far as I know... Thomanns are regarded as a bit or a bugger for the U.K as they can sell cheaper than some U.K outlets can buy in so the U.K shop may well buy in from Thomanns..but the manufacturers are pretty strict about this and have all sorts of clauses/penalties to stop it happening. I don't believe Andertons would take that risk, tbh... they are building a rival empire to the German outlet anyway...?? I'd just wait until the right bass crops up...or bite the bullet and buy a Sei or Celinder S/H or maybe Sadwosky and Overwaters for lesser money. ...that way you are pretty much beyond the foibles of the Fenders/Laklands, IMO. -
Gallien Krueger rig: change all, change some or keep as is?
JTUK replied to JimBobTTD's topic in Amps and Cabs
Amp is manageable, you need two manageable cabs and it shouldn't be too hard to replace a 115 and 210..especially as you don't seem entirely convinced by either. I'd say a typical 115 and 210 would rate 650w combined and 2x112 or a 212 would do 600. More than enough for most gigs if you do pubs and small venues upto around 150 people. Beyond that, you are looking for a P.A on the bill anyway. So.. I'd go 2x112 using relatively efficient 112's as easy to lug around even if you make two trips which you should always be prepared to do...why kill yourself and strain things carrying 30kgs? ( I do use cabs around this weight, but I don't carry them far...so trolleys or wheeled cabs are the norm then ) My 112's are around 31lbs or so, iirc...and I use them for the silly load-in gigs and if we don't know the venue, we make a point of asking about parking and load-in anyway. -
+1 I'm doing some gigs with a great drummer, but it's taken me a long time to feel comfortable playing with him. He doesn't seem to vary the beat at all. It feels mechanical but when I listen to the recordings his playing is spot on.
This is what happened with that guy I messaged you about, Chris...very correct and sorted fab drummer but he insisted on playing foward and dead straight and as he was the dep I bent to him. I didn't feel it, tbh.. but the playback recording was great. The second set he loosed up and we spoke to him and he was much better for me. I can see that guy doing very very good gigs as he has it all sorted.. but the most pertinent thing was, he is nowhere near our other guy who is just on another planet, ( the gulf is amazing ) with feel, chops and general musicality and I just love to play with him on the gig. .
It gets a bit weird when your older if you join a band thats been going for years. All the other members have known each other since they were young.and you cant help but feel sort of on the outside of everything. Its happened to me a few times now.
That wouldn't bother me... I like a drink but I like to drink with people I like.. and that is not what I look for in band mates. I just have to get on with them at a certain level. If I like a few wll enough then that is better, but I don't need to see them all the time. The music is the common thing and if that works, everything else slots in... It is always when the music goes wrong that the band goes wrong, IMO.

Might not get any thanks here, but Rocco is way too mechical and it just isn't funky, IMO. U.K guy I used to like, Jerome Rimson. You can't ignore Jaco, as you know. You can get great lines from a pick and heavy muting. Anthony Jackson and Bobby Vega... who is great at whatever he does.. http://vimeo.com/72357168
Yeah but not by compensating for crap playing though. You'll end up roughly in time but the song will lack feel and dynamics...it won't sound tight and smooth
If you know what you are doing... it should all be covered. I'm known for a deep pocket so generally I'm kind to drummers, but of course, there will be a standard of player required and that is why you know what pool you swim in.

Did nothing for me.... but I only saw one track and that was enough. If that is indicative, then wll pass their sell-by date.. but then that seems a theme on 'Later' these days.

what's the worst thing that's happened to you onstage?
JTUK replied to Funky Dunky's topic in General Discussion
Band member had a nervous breakdown ( let's call it that ) on stage... Whole evening was a NIGHTMARE... -
I want to play back and I have most trouble with a forward drummer... but whilst it may feel odd at the time, you hear it you play it and the recording invaribly comes up well, as one of us has adjusted..usually me, because that is what bass players do. They make everyone else sound good by knitting it all together. For this reason, I normally want my say on the drummer and I find gtrs and vox just don't get it like bass and keys do..typically... as they hear the top of the song and we hear the bottom. The drummer has to know what he is doing to stop racing the song if forward and dragging it if back... but I don't really go in for wondering where the beat is or should be.. you just lock in and do it. As I prefer back, naturally, I might suggest a 'lazy' beat and I expect them to know what that means...

I am not at all fussed about friends in a band as you'll probably have a crisis at some point. I pick the members of band chemistry and of course, you need people to be professional about things but I fully expect bust-ups but not to throw toys out of the pan. I think bands have a finite life and thne you change things move on and that must be forward, and then you can't go any further. I've just left my current band for those reasons so I am preparing ideas for the next unit. If the new band is not an improvement then I've learnt nothing and it wont work....but I'll know that straight away and so I don't go down many blind alleys in this regard. I don't do nostalgia reunions just for the sake of it... it needs to work, and the reason I left that outfit is also probably going to be the reason I wont go back... So, I need to be friendly in a band but I don't look to use life long friends... but I would class them as musical 'friends' so altho I'll have adrink at a gig.. there would be pretty rare occasions where we socialise without it being a band day. Respect and professionalism is what I look for... after the musical chemistry bit.

I really really wouldn't take notice of an all black bass.... totally wrong IMO.. but MP has such a great eye that he can make it work. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/247454-sei-bass-5-string-black-beauty/page__pid__2585186#entry2585186 Not sure what the exact price is but a Sei for that sort of money is a LOT of bass...IMO. -
I wanted to say Byron MIller, but I'm going with Ready Freddie

The first problem with Gtrs is that they think they ARE the band... which is some cases is true, but then they don't get past that POV in other musical situations.. They think everyone else is there to support them...which is missing the point and they think THEY have to drive the song. If all this is true and happens, then you are in the wrong band for the wrong reasons.. It is rare indeed for a gtr to not play a part..and just let the track breathe, but when they insist on wall papering over everything, then I'm out. Classic gtr thinking.... and this happens more than you want. Band playing a straight pumping bass line..and the gtr will jump on top and probably drown out the bass... And don't get me started on riffs... FFS..!!
I've had both of these... American Deluxe Jazz Bass V - http://www.fender.co...-bwb-pickguard/ ........................
That is the type of thing I'm looking for. As for Overwaters..they can be very nice as well... Again, like the Deluxe, they tend to sit very substantially on you and it feels 'big' in your hands so you know you have an instrument to get to grips with...which I like. Was very impressed with one I saw recently... looked great, sounded Great. Depends what the price was as to whether it would go on my list tho.. -

My thinking is get Martin P to make me one in the spec I want...which is sunburst, red tort, j pickups, sliver hardware and block and bound RW, P neck dims... or pick up as close as damn it same thing in American Deluve J5. I know you wont have Sei quality but then the price would be nigh on double, I'm calculating, for that. Having said that...a deposit down now, gives a year to save up the rest..??? So, in the meantime, back to the ads... I know where there is a red wine AD J5..very nice..!! -
£1,500 - £1,800 feels right to me. Only ones hitting £2K from when I was buying & selling them were the limited edition old redwood models. These really were a thing of beauty and sounded amazing (yes, there really was a huge difference in tone from the different body wood, lol) but they weighed a good 11lbs or so & too heavy for me to gig with. One of my favourite ever 'home late at night' basses though
Looking at the website bass product line, it is a NS/NS4,about 20 years old, I'd say, not really knowing the line in detail It has j type pickups and is a high gloss translucent blue finish. The owner mutters something about Ltd edition but the sn will confirm, I guess. It is still going to be hard to get a realistic value on it, but since they don't seem intent on selling it, I will just advise a ball park thinking price for them to keep in mind..until the time comes...??
-
Is the TKS range you have going to be kept as demo, Barrie, so therefore mostly always in shop..? Was thinking about arranging a visit soon.
-
I am going to get all the paperwork and SN detail and run it by Spector... I'd have to set-up and check it over but I'd say it is 'worth' about £1500...1800 TOPS but then if that is the market, I'd advise them to go for what the market will bear. I am sure anything over £2k will delight them..??

Help a moron understand day.........mark bass amp and cabs
JTUK replied to donslow's topic in Amps and Cabs
If you run the amp flat out, then you might damage the 250 watt cab, but I never had my LM2 over half and it was loud enough for me. If you want more volume don't turn it up just add the second cab. I always daisy chain cabs but you can do either. Why do you need new cabs? The ones you have might sound great. Play this rig for awhile before you look to change it. If you buy good cabs then you don't need a 15 for the low end. That might have been the case 30 years ago when bass cabs generally weren't as well designed, but you'll get more bass out of a modern 410 than any 15.
This... except I don't daisy chain the cabs. I don't think this is the amp to be thinking about running 500w but neither do I think you'll need more than a 410 or 212 with it. Having said that... a modular 2x112 would be a good way to go as that upscales perfectly and it is an easier carry. An expensive was to do it mind, possibly, but worth it. If you have designs on a theatrical bass stack... the amp wont work there... -
Good thread, I know someone who wants to price up their limited edition U.S Spector. Doubt they are selling just yet though for sentimental reasons.. £4k.... WHAT..!!!
