Just purchased a Aguilar DB 410 at 4ohms. Sounds really good with the DB 750. Cheers
Perfect... you can add a DB210 at 8 ohms for a killer stage rig as well. It is what I do with a DB212... I put one of my DB210's on top for the gigs that need it.

Five String Jazz Basses talk to me?! NOW A NBD THREAD !!!!!
JTUK replied to stingrayPete1977's topic in Bass Guitars
Great colour.... shame that pretty much puts the thread to bed..and shame the Am deluxe didn't work. -
I think chris_b was saying that you need a signal chain that is complimentary...and matched, and therefore that is trying to be as uncomplicated as you can get.
-
Don't fight the sound of the bass... there is only so far you can go with chasing and EQ'ing without sounding like a mess... and even if you arrive ata great sound, likely by accident, you'll never get it again. So, stay close to the inherrent sound of the bass and if you don't rate that...swap the bass.
-
I held back from saying this.. the bass and drums are fine, the girls are too weak. Singing and keys are bland so you'd need to fix that but I get that you can't 'sack' them. So, you'll live or die on the limits of the line-up, IMO.
-
Nice cabs, but 15, 12 and 8 doesn't make much sense to me and if true, that would put me right off. If stock and in good audio condition, then a lot of cab for the money.
-
I thought there was one for sale here..in the classifieds
-
I use a DB212 which sounds great but I also really like it with 2 DB210's. My fave combo is the DB750 with DB212 plus DB210 ... and I have no need to add the 2nd DB210 so I use that at home as a permanent set-up with aTH500.

Some basses really work without dot markers and that CAR Sei was a looker, IMO. The Overwater with white pearloid guard..?? Hmmm, maybe, but the difference for me is that when MP gets it right and very often he does, he REALLY gets it right so you have stunning looking bass that is a blinder to play, IMO. Unless something perfect drops in my lap, then I can see me having to resort to plan B..or was it plan A all the time,..?? and commision MP.. -
Maybe... but there are others that aren't... Susan Boyle and Leona Lewis, for example, were VERY green before they went on, iirc... So, in that sense, the rags to riches story is relevant, IMO.
-
Maybe the kids see the fast track talent shows where people get TV time and an audience without never ever having to put some real time in... I think Leona Lewis was a classic case in point in that she had never really performed in from of people. ..and so went from nothing to a very high level of the game?? Kids get the impression that is all that is needed... 15mins of TV and you're there... whereas most had to learn to play an instrument and then work up thru the gigs.. An instant type of gratification seems to be expected. Of course, you have always had non talents, but it is harder to pull that off in the Dog and Duck... you have to have a few balls to sing to a cold audience who might be totally disinterested from the start and never get beyond that...?? Paying your dues..?? They may not even be in it for the love of it... they just want 15mins on TV... I pretty recently met someone who did all her singing to a mirror...as it turns out she really has a voice; the type that gets people's ear straight away, but if she wasn't working with people who had educated her and brought her on, she'd still know nothing. She may well do a major talent show..as she HAS talent but she never even thought about learning to play..
I got my first royalty cheque!!! It won't buy a house, it won't buy a car, it won't buy a bass ( ok, maybe one of those Sue Ryder ones) but it's real!! Have sold about 540 copies worldwide. Says I have sold none in Australia!!! Philistines!!!
Sounds like you could have tweaked it a bit and I'd be surprised if it wasn't receptive to that... but then to do that, you'd need the shop/seller to be compliant. I like the action low... but some people wouldn't as it would be too clanky. Also, I'm very picky about string feel so that would be another factor for me... but I think I'd get to know enough about how it stacked up to be worth buying and tweaking at a later point. What I don't tend to like....on any bass... is 'unfinished' necks. I like a traditional lacquer as otherwise they feel 'cheap' to me. Each to their own, but a dull old piece of maple untreated ruins the whole thing...
Wez is from Bromley. A good player. I'm playing with him on Friday.
That is pretty local.... might check him out next time he is around. Will be cheaper than shipping in from Chertsey... hopefully.
-
Wez Johnson on drums. He is not local as far as I can recall
-
As far as I know, Dudely and Katie would have been on that gig......Not sure of the rest of the band and if they are on every date. It sounds like they have had some good gigs tho
-
I like a solid mass ..as opposed to a cheap plate but not sure how much difference in sound you can hear, but I think it could help the string speak a bit better... But... this is just a small part of the chain and it also depends on the quality of the rest of the components, IMO. Great bridge but pretty poor wood or anything else ... means a waste of time and money, to me..!!
Re your previous comment,I'm thought this was a discussion about pub gigs in general. No surprises: Sweet home Alabama, alright now (occasionally), brown eyed girl, mustang sally, a little respect, Roxanne, Billie Jean, superstition, I feel good. Not all classic Blues/Rock and not exactly expanding musical minds but they work 90% of the time.
I'd be very surprised if that set of tunes captured a 20 something crowd, tbh. I'd say it would work on a much older crowd..unfortunately ... but you'd empty the bar pretty quick if they were 20 somethings. Certainly round here. And I am not so sure it would be such a great set for a 40's crowd... altho that would also depend on the band doing them.
Question, would a band like mine with a 29 year old female front and lead guitarists doing 70s style blues/rock get decent crowds in your pubs if we came over to do a short pub tour. Or would we fall into the same boat as your local bands. I was thinking cause were Yanks we might be different and interesting. Blue
Difficult to say.... people are a bit sheep like so they tend to need to know the band. Friends of mine are trying to sell the Kirk Fletcher tour for AGES..and they seen to be doing ok with crowds but they have to promote the hell out of it and virtually drag people out. And that is quite a regarded Bluesman..it will be interesting to get the real story when the tour finishes..? We have a few touring acts from France do the same sort of thing...but they only really survive in one town for a couple of dates. Even ex name Rock guys struggle to sell tickets at £10 enough of the times. It is a very tricky one..
-
But to be fair, playing in bars will do them no good at all with that sort of set. As good as he is, you wouldn't go and see him every few months so he is best out of it. Whether that means he has enough work/income for his needs is another thing but sometimes you can overplay an area. I have no idea how big your city is but we can't sell a show and play there again with 6 weeks of each gig...and we also have to offer something different they haven't seen or don't see often. Anything to make the gig different/special and sell. Sometimes it is just enough to get a horn section and two girl BV's... But also, selling 350 tickets is a big pressure for a band like us..and really hard work...and stress. We ask for a band to play with us and can offer them about £400 for 60-70 mins work but they need to be able to chip in with selling about 100 tickets... We don't get many takers... it is a tough sell, IME. But the thread is good... I like to get a feel for what works in what context, gig-wise but it can be a minefield and ..er.... perplexing..!!

Five String Jazz Basses talk to me?! NOW A NBD THREAD !!!!!

That is why I am not too keen to pay the new price for the Fender...as I could wait for another Sei but I do fancy the Deluxe at a price I can bare. The Sei's are substantial pieces of work and you know you are wearing one... Not so much weight as I don't find them heavy..I have no idea how much they weigh, but they feel 'authoritive'.. Mind you, so do MM Sr5's and the Deluxe, to my mind. The Deluxe has a cosmetic thing, I quite like..all others things being acceptable.. and to get a sunburst, RW Block and Bound Sei is likely to cost me a commision and the best part of £3k. I may well still do that, but I remain interested in the Deluxe as I like the sound I hear. I am hearing modern vintage ..ie suitably woody but lots of attack. This will compliment my 2 Sei's which do Marcus Miller slap and vintage well enough for me. The Deluxe sounds like it has a bit more aggression altho my RW could get close, if I really wanted it to..maybe. But I like what it already does.. So..GAS it is... and this thread is feeding it. I have gone off the DJ5 from a sound POV. Too kind and not angsty or weight enough, typically so deffo needs a pre amp. But the fun is... I'll try a few next week.
I wish this was in stock at my store to try, and the Deluxe version is still pre order only http://www.guitargui...=12031010420658
I have a Sei like that...but MoP and bound .. the tort plate is killer and even tho I take a fancy quilted Maple birdseye jobbie out as well..the one that gets all the attention is the White body/tort and RW..!!! But the closer you get to both...you notice the little things that MP excels at. -
Which branches though, which one are you visting? I've found in the past that the stock list is nonsense but that can go either way, although not listed they might have an oly white deluxe with rw board after all.
Epsom... tbh..wasn't that knocked out with the shop or the basses on show the last time. It is probably too much of a detour off the M25 on our way to Twyford tho' -
Neither would I blame him..but presumably he had to do them for some reason. As I said on another thread, quality is no garaunteed seller in itself as there is no accounting for other people likes or dislikes.. or just plain their version of 'good' It is a puzzle... and one we had to evaluate which didn't please me..but then neither did playing to half empty gigs....or worse..!!
-
Sounds a great player...but you can't blame kids for not having the required taste..or any taste, come to that and that is the problem with any audience...there is no accounting for what they like and why they like it. The problem is getting them out in any numbers to be viable.... One of the most popular bands around here are also one of the least capable but they are a live show and people will go and see them..so much so that they sold out a 450 hall in 29 hrs at £10:00 a ticket. Now...which ever way you skin that.... that is pretty good going for a pub standard band.. and I'd say maybe not a great pub standard band at that. But...they have something that people will buy..!!! No justice, maybe... but there you go..!!
