3. I've just off loaded a VMJ fretless and have £220 burning a hole in my pocket. I've seen a few of these go for around £250 S/H but never seen one in Sonic Blue. Want one. Now.
4. Hi Bri, You're right, the GK MB210 doesn't have a detatchable head, but do you need it to be removable? It's an advantage if you're doing sessions or whatever, so you can keep "your sound", but the MB210 only weighs 16kg in total, which, believe me, is an incredible advantage when it comes to getting your gear in and out of venues. My bass goes over my shoulder (straps, y'see..) case for accessories in one hand, amp in the other! Simples! Gear moved in one hit - definitely good when it's raining... I haven't tried the Promethean, the MarkBass is out of my price range and the Harley Benton is a little too cheap (I'm such a snob...) so I can't really comment on those amps, but the GK does what I want it to. I use a passive jazz bass, played fingerstyle it is incredibly warm sounding, played with a pick, it sounds hard, with plenty of attack. The bottom end is tremendous for a 2 x 10, so much so that I intend to buy a stand for it as a lot of the low end goes through the floor. So, to recap - 16kg, 300w, £480. You pay yer money, you makes yer choice. I love it.
5.
Nearly an hour and no mention of Johnny Borrell? Unbelievable. Let's have Pete Doherty while we're at it too.
+1 for those two. f***wits, the pair of 'em.
6. I have a Gallien Krueger MB210 combo - 300w and 16kgs. I paid £480 for mine new last summer, and that was the cheapest deal I could find. This amp has buckets of bottom end, is quite warm sounding, but has a "hard" sound to it (as opposed to "harsh"). I love it for all the above reasons but mainly because I can pick it up with one hand. I too was fed up with lugging 4 x 10 cabs around. Not good when you have a knackered back.
7.
I hear ya, but there is a kind of Dolphinesque elegance to the design, especially the old "Pro 2" which came in solid colours. This is just a little reminiscent of a Dolphin, right?... Eude
That is postively Dali-esque. But they are odd looking things. I've said this before on another thread, but as for single-cuts - they remind me of sperm whales. Sea-bound mammals ahoy!
8. Don't like Dolphins. They don't even look like a dolphin. And they haven't got built in sonar. Or their own TV show. Nasty. You'll have someone's eye out with that...
9. I went back to a 4 a few years back - wasn't using the low B at all. Would like to try a fretless 5 with a high C though...
10.
Nice looking basses. A bit too "Streamery" - it's a techincal term - possible?
I'll see your "Streamery" and raise you a "Spectorlike".
11. Not as replaceable as the drummer - he's getting on me tits...
12. The Isle Of Wight contingent grows a bit more... Told ya this was better than T***bass didn't I? Welcome Scott!
13. Hey, thanks chaps. I think I'm going to sit down with it and do the systematic thing. It's something I need to get out of my system to see if I can produce something worthwhile. Electronica underneath a kind of melodic fretless/fretted bass playing thing... Mick Karn, Pino, Mark King, Michael Manring, just some weird stuff I have to get off my chest! I'm not the sort of person to sit down and read the manual usually, but patience is a virtue and all that. The PC could do with an overhaul anyway, and I think this is the time to do it. Thanks again, I'll let you know how I get on.
14. So, I've solved the glitching (crackling) problems on FL studio, but I still can't get a decent sound when I plug my bass in. I can't get the input volume up, it sounds distorted, and I'm just about ready to put my foot through the PC. I've downloaded Audacity, but I cant get an input signal on that either. If I record on Audacity it will pick the signal up (with a nice little buzzing in the background) but I can't hear anything until I play it back. As I've mentioned, I am a complete novice. Is it my PC? Is it my DI box (QTX active injection box)? Surely it can't be that hard to get the sound I want (i.e. any sound).....
15.
Reported this to ebay on Thursday. Did they reply or do owt about it? Did they f**k! The result ...Some poor bastard got fleeced yesterday.
I reported it too - just before I made the original post on here. Do Ebay take any notice of these reports? Or are there so many fraudulent ads on there that if they pulled all of them, they would start to lose money?
16. Cheeky git... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200704558757 A for effort though...
17. I love my MIM Jazz. Ok, so it's not a vintage instrument but it still has that jazz essence - simple layout, passive, honk n fonk. Mr. Fender certainly got it right with that design. (Having said that I really fancy a precision at the moment - GAS is a terrible thing)
18.
I don't use WMP and FL Studio at the same time - in fact WMP throws up an error if I've got FL launched. Why do you need to use FL and WMP at the same time, incidentally?
Never had an error message when I've used them together. When I've completed a track I'll move it to my library for ease of reference, Sometimes I'll use my library for a little inspiration while composing. That's my story and I'm sticking to it...(cough!) When I was using FL last night, the distortion was happening without having WMP open. I'm a total novice when it comes to technical issues I'm afraid.
19.
I've got FL Studio 7 and have no trouble recording audio with it. I had the 'crackling' problem too, and it baffled me for a while. I use an Edirol UA-5 audio interface, and it turned out I needed to disable the PC's onboard sound card. The problem stemmed from trying to use both simultaneously.
This sounds like the problem I've got. The crackling occurs when I've used FL and WMP at the same time. After listening to something from my library I've gone back into FL and tried to play back one of my tracks - only to find this type of distortion under the track. Does my head in it does...
20.
To be honest your PC should be ok with FL studio. Its more than likely to do with that Realtek Audio card. If you don't want to shell out on an Audio card, try Asio4all, its a free Asio driver that can help with budget consumer Audio cards. See if that helps. Dead easy to set up, download & help here. http://www.asio4all.com/ Garry
Nice one Lowdown, I've just downloaded that. I'll have another go with FL Studio / bass a bit later. I'll let you know how I get on! Cheers!
21.
Sounds like a Latency issue, or if you have input echo in FL, is it engaged. What Audio/sound card are you using ? What drivers with the card Asio/Wdm/Mme ? A bit more info on PC specs and Audio card, and someone might be able to help. Garry
No echo engaged, PC is a HP Pavillion with Intel(R) Celeron(R) D CPU 3.20GHz Realtek HD Audio Asio driver (I think) Cheers
22. Hi all, I've been using FL Studio 7 for a while now, and have managed to complete some fairly decent electronica tunes using this software. But now I'm at the stage where I want to get a bit more "bass-centric", and would like to incorporate fretless over some completed backing tracks. The tracks I've made previously have all used the "on-board" bass sounds (in fact, all the instrumentation has come from the software), and tonight I tried to input my passive bass to the on board mixer. I am really struggling with the software for many reasons. First, there is a slight delay between me plucking the string and the sound coming out of the speakers. Second, I can't seem to get a bass sound without it sounding like I'm playing it in a toilet - the echo can be quite bad. Third, I also seem to get a "crackling" sound behind the bass sound, this also appears behind the actual backing track I'm trying to play to. It can get to a point where I have to reset the software because the track just sounds awful - it's a bit like distortion but kind of seperate from the actual music, if that makes sense. I'm using a basic DI box, but it may just be that the PC can't handle it... i don't really know... Frustration is at an all time high. I am a bit of a novice when it comes to this, so if anyone has any advice for me, please keep it as layman's speak! Cheers!
23. Here's mine. http://soundcloud.com/bonneville Not in the least bit "bass-centric" but something else I enjoy doing on my own... Enjoy!
24. Thanks. I was sick and tired of lugging around big heavy cabs, so took the plunge with the GK. Well worth it. I'm over my amp GAS, but every time I come on here I see basses I'd love to own. My next target is a nice Precision - might go down the bitsa route. Cash is scarce at the mo, until I get gigging again...
25.
I bought some Roto strings last week, put them on my bass only to find that the 'G' string was pretty dead.
Had the same problem with a number of packs of Rotos, that's why I stopped buying 'em. +1 for the Warwick reds. Total value for money and they last!
