1. As a huge user of chrome covers on P-basses I have to say, um, no!
2. Just to redress the balance, it's flatwounds all the way with me. I first realised they could be a good option back in about 1998 but didn't take the plunge until last year. I should have done it last year. Basses are generally sold with roundwounds so being a flats player is usually going to be an additional expense
3. Welcome
4. Thank you Donald & good news re your Dad. My guitarist has been clear of kidney cancer for 8yrs & also been heavily involved in buskingforcancer. I hope to get involved with it myself too next year
5.
Here we go again.
And with people digging up a thread that's almost 2yrs old too!
6. Personally one of the attractions of bass is moving around trying new things. My last band was very country, my current lot is very Americana. I like the idea of doing Stonesy type stuff one minute & Dylan the next. I would like to have played in Stephen Stills Manassas band
7.
I dunno what kind of size and quality venues you're used to but its a good one, I'd come down and check you guys out but its really not my kinda music.
We're used to Art Centres and semi decent support slots so I am sure this will be a good show. I don't suppose every band on the forum is going to be for every bass player. We're very much in the Ryan Adams / Neil Young / Son Volt vein so if people don't like Americana we aren't really going to be the band for them.
8.
Be grateful for any opportunity you get. Covers, originals - it's simply irrelevant. Just play!
Well said that man! I went out last night to see my guitarist play with his covers band. All serious players. It is what it is. They filled the pub, people liked them & they could all play. I think generally I prefer originals bands but at least they are out there doing it.
9. I wiah he'd say what is hybrid about it. The parts must have some history surely?
10.
Who's the rhythm guitarist?
It's her husband Darryl Higham who plays in her main band and has backed the likes of Shakin' Stevens in the past. Loved Al's bass on Jools show too
11. Welcome Pete
12. This seems to be a duplicate thread of http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=106872&hl= You don't need to post in more than one section, the threads do get picked up. Either of the sections you used is fine
13. 1976 is the bicentinary year so T-birds are worth more from that year. Without the common neck break, I'd agree roughly with Gareth's pricing (on all 3, not having seen the Fenders) although in the current climate there don't seem to be many quick sales & I certainly wouldn't look to go higher than those figures.
14.
May wander to Win on Tuesday as it fits with another plan - what time you on approx? Lard feeling rock star again ?
Er, yes - two other people commenting on this thread!?! Frightening. Richard Warren opens and Luke Doucet headlines so we could be on as early as 8.45pm (can't see it being before) and over by 10pm. As always I'm always happy to see any Basschatters
15. Looking good and I've saved that link too...very useful
16. I have two rigs. If I am not sharing I take my vintage 70s valve amp and if I am sharing I take an old 90s solid state head instead. It is a pain and I agree with Monkonthehill that these promoters usually do pretty well out of such things. I'm happier lending cabs then heads. Most bands we play with are country / folk so they don't drive the amps as hard as when I was in my punk days. I think if I still played punk I would be a lot less likely to share
17. I can't add much to Lozz's detailed answer but to say both are good all rounders. They are used in soul, funk, jazz, country, indie, metal, blues etc where as some basses are more obviously genre specific (you can break the rules but I merely make the point). I too am a P-bass player, the Jazz seems to be, & I am hugely generalising here, for flashier playing or players with smaller hands. The one bit from above I've never really got is when people say about Jazzes being easier to play. You get used to any neck profile and ultimately if you are practising with one instrument you will bond with it anyway. I always feel a bit clusmsy on a Jazz but this is simply because I'm not used to them & certainly not a design fault. Your best bet is to go into your local shop and try both. Take on board the comments made but go with the instrument YOU feel most comfortable with.
18. Sorry I'm sure most of you don't need the link but for those like me with the interweb skills of an 85yr old the link is http://twitter.com/basschatuk here. I appreciate I could be (& should be) publically mocked but I had to go through quite a mini investigation to get to it!
19. Good price (with the shipping) for a nice giggable combo. I've used these before and got a good tone which kept up with our drummer no problem. Have a bump on me (albeit only a 5mins later bump!).
20. bump for Tuesday & a surprise Duke & the King support in Nottingham on Monday too
21. Never seen that either. And I'm equally baffled
22.
with regards to the richest.....It isn't me, that's for sure
I very much doubt I'll be checking any lists either
23.
I have no grades at all nor can I read music (the same for many musicians if we are still allowed to call ourselves that?) and recently spent an evening with a very fine classical player who came to a blues jam with me a couple of years ago and said he wished he could do that,I thought he was taking the piss at first but he wasnt and he got me to go and show him the basics of the 12 bar and a few simple licks to get him started. I was amazed at what he could play if it was in front of him and literally nothing without! It was like some kind of comedy sketch. You cant teach rock its not possible ,Look at cold play and all that stuff,Middle class mushy rockers cant do a full on Metallica thing,They think they can and I have played with some top notch drummers that read symbols and all sorts of stuff but when it comes to the final rock out at the end,Nothing.....its not on the page.
I played bass on a Total Guitar magazine CD (issue 10 if anyone cares) because the magazine wanted a club band type vibe rather than schooled musicians. I was hugely flattered at the time & I think we always admire players who are different to us. I have the upmost respect for people who read music etc & it amazes me on the rare occasions they tell me they like my style.
24. Welcome Wally
25. I had it happen a couple of times back in the late 90s, raised the issue & the parts were changed. I was amazed nobody else in the band picked up on it because we were really clashing
