In an effort to make space and money for my next purchase, here is my old westone concord 1 guitar. Made in Matsumoku, sometime around 1983. Lovely deep yellow maple neck and fretboard, all original apart from the tuners. A couple of cracks in the scratchplate, a scratch on the fretboard, and several dings in the body. This guitar has been extensively gigged, and has come with us as backup guitar on most of our gigs in the last couple of years. To my ears sounds a bit like an angry telecaster, if that makes sense to anyone These two pics show the scratch on the fretboard and the crack in the scratchplate a little more clearly £100?

After a long period of pondering, I've decided to try and part with this. A strange beast: 100w bass/guitar all valve amp, with all vintage top quality components components (valves are new). Probably home made in 1974, judging from the dates on the components. The power stage looks like to be a faithful copy of a 70's fender bassman 100, with two massive Fender transformers. After much investigation, it looks like the pre stage has been extensively modified from the original bassman, to resemble a fender twin tone stage, perhaps for guitar use. The amp has been extensively serviced and worked on. Beautiful tone, with excellent higher mids and highs, sounds fantastic with my squier CV Jazz (also for sale). Volume is more than adequate for small to medium gigs, and overdrive is more than manageable. Weighs a predictable ton, can be used as is, could be further improved or modified, or could be even broken up and sold as parts. I couldn't bring myself to do that... What do you think, £[s]250[/s] £220? Can you find a cheaper vintage all valve amp? Happy to entertain trades of any kind, just try me! SOLD Much has been said about the quality and value of these basses, and I couldn't agree more. I've played and gigged mine extensively, and i'm parting with it only to make money and room for a new purchase that would end up replacing it. Two small battle scars on the upper part of the body (someone dropped something on it at a gig), no damage on headstock or on the back of the body. See pics. £200? Mine is identical to the one Mr Entwhistle is using in the pic, minus the bridge and "pickup" metal cover, and the name on the headstock is CMI. Still a Peter Cook one, mind you If you take out and inspect he pickup, you can see it's in fact a single coil pickup in a very large humbucker-esque casing, probably to imitate the EB0 look. I've strung mine with slightly heavy roundwounds, and it's got a very bright and aggressive sound, giving me a JJ Brunel-ish sound when played through the right amp. The tone control does a lot, so the sound when the tone is rolled off all the way is very smooth. Ive done plenty ska and reggae gigs with it some pics here

I have and use a long scale one, and it doesn't sound anything like an EB0 to my ears! i wonder what the current going price is, just for curiosity (not selling)

Interesting point, i'll try an sr500 and see how it compares
Try this link and listen to the video on the page. Try to copy the link in one line and paste into the address bar. If that doesn't work then go to Ibanez - bass - SR Series - Sr1200 Premium. http://www.ibanez.co...=2&series_id=17 I had and listen. That is one nice sound. Balcro.
Yep, that's a sound worth saving up for

I tried the ibby and the lakland skyline one after the other. I think both use Nordstrands, probably different models. All I can comment is that they sound very modern and well defined and beg you to play funk. Perhaps not the warm embrace of old school low-end, and the Ibby has a definitely more aggressive eq and a fantastic neck. Still undecided and too poor to afford either

It's this weekend, and we're on the BBC website (just): http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-edinburgh-east-fife-17624555 Red2Red, that's us! Come and support us, the stage is just between the two museums right off princes street!

I tried one of these last week while away for work in Nancy, France. I am extremely impressed with every aspect of it, from the quality and shape of the neck to the lightness and comfort of the body. The pickups (nordstrands i believe) and active eq can produce a continuous variations of great modern tones. Couldn't stop playing it, literally. The neck is so fast it's hard to play conservatively and with restraint. Lovely! If I didn't have to fly back with hand luggage only I would have really been considering walking away with it there and then. As i'm hoping to be in the market for a modern active bass soon, this has gone straight to the top of the list, close to a lakland skyline and warwick corvette!

Not a bass, but my Westone Concord I guitar shows signs of having been used with a 3rd bridge (likely a screwdriver wedged between fingerboard and strings) sometime in the early 80's. Given the amount of bashing, I can safely claim noise/experimental punk band of the era Very curious about the CMI Ned Callan, as it's older than me (1971, according to those in the know), yet shows only moderate wear and tear. An unloved piece of attic furniture? A prop for a John Entwistle promo shoot? Who knows!
the trem effect is the amp going into oscillation. personally i'd redo the pre, since you'll be lucky to get 200 for it and the transformers aren't really gonna be worth as much as you think they are.
I am also thinking that redoing the pre is looking increasingly like the best option. The quotes are whatever the tech gave me. I am reasonably knowledgeable in matters electrical, but not in the value of vintage components
-
I've tried the amp again at home last night. The pre doesn't clip almost at all, and the sound is clean(ish) all the way to max gain in the pre. That is with very low volume from the power stage, haven't tested the overall effect yet. Interestingly enough, we tried bridging the inputs like to engage all channels, and we could hear a weird and interesting tremolo/flanging effect on the signal The amp almost certainly has parts that started life as PCB bits from a kit, but there is plenty of signs of modification on the PCBs themselves. It is quite likely that it has been modded to alter the tone to suit a certain style of guitar playing. I had to ask the tech to stop working on it, as I wanted to make a decision about what to do with it. I still haven't... The options I have are:

Sell it as is, for around £200. Probably more appealing as a guitar amp, but the current tone is very nice for bass too. Tempting, but a bit of a wasted opportunity, as Mr Foxen says
Sell the components separately. Original Fender OPTs from 1973 should fetch a fair bit of money, maybe £300/£350 for the lot? Does anyone else think that is close to murder ?
Rip out the existing preamp, and have it rebuilt as a proper bassman pre (or even a fender twin pre) using as many of the existing bits as possible.
Bypass the preamp, and use it as a valve power amp with another pre
Keep it as is.
What would you do?

Well I got it back from the tech, took a few pics of the inside. Looks like all top quality components, dated from late 1973 to early 1974. Transformers are all in good nick, original Fender parts from the late 1973. The verdict is that the power stage is effectively a clone of a Bassman 100, down to the components. The pre stage is a lot messier, possibly starting as a clone of a fender twin pre, and then "improved" over the years, probably by trial and error judging from the amount of corrections. My tech's opinion is that it would have been easier to rip out the entire pre and rebuild as a bassman using the same components whereever possible (or as a proper fender twin pre). It's a lot easier than trying to second guess the intentions of the original builder 37 years ago... I took it straight to band practice last night. Used it through a hartke 4x10 with a squier cv jazz. It actually sounds very good, and one of the channels is a lot louder than the others, so there it went Extremely nice highs in an old school sort of way, the jazz truly sang when we did a bit of drum and bass/funk/dub jam. Volume wise, it kept up easily, but don't know how much clean(ish) headroom i had left. The volume knob was only about halfway up, but that means very little. The tech tested it and could rate it at around 40W clean, as the pre make it distort quite heavily pretty quickly. Boy is it heavy...Make the Peavey Mark III feel light and positively portable...

Comeback gig for the covers band on saturday, and first EVER gig for the singer. She never even sang with a band before joining ours, and never using a mike and PA... Anyway, it went down an absolute storm, perfect mixture of pop, motown, funk and rock from all eras. We had to go back on and play a couple of half rehearsed numbers (You oughta know, fantastic space for an aggressive funk bassline BTW) to satisfy the punters, and then again to redo a couple of earlier numbers. Walked away with enquiries for two charity and a wedding gig TC RH450 and the two fender cabs performed great with the aerodyne P, great overall sound in the mix. Happy days.
Be really sure you want rid before selling it. It hasn't huge value as is, and replacing it will be a case of paying for an amp with some sort of name, because you are unlikely to find another like it without a name.
I'll have to try it again before I make any final decision, and I'm well aware that selling it won't buy me a real bassman or any other valve amp! Then again, i've not had it for a year and gigged equally well with my other amps...Decisions
-
One year on, I'm picking up the amp again from the tech in a few days' time. He made several fixes (improvements), checked that the power stage is just fine, and can't do any more. Since I brought it in, i've sold my old school cabs, and generally didn't really miss the amp. Hence, i'm thinking of selling it. It's been suggested that it may be worth more in bits, as it's made up of all the best components you could buy in 1974, and all are in good working conditions. Any ideas or suggestions?
but the great number of exceptions make it hard... Try "Wymondham" or "Milngavie"
Menzies takes the biscuit for me I used to go to Strathaven with my rugby team, we knew how to wind them up before and after the game
No harder than learning how to pronounce "Leicester", "Worcester" etc. correctly. The only thing you need to do is be willing to find out.
True, we all make an effort to learn how to pronounce them properly. Then you go in a shop in italy and ask to try a hartke combo, only to be shown a artec practice amp. (Yes i'm italian) And by the way I ended up buying the artec practice combo
-
Does anyone have any idea how hard to pronounce certain brands are for non-english speakers? warwick is a classic (warvich? varvik?), or trace elliot (traxeliot is my favourite)

We're playing live on The Mound (the street just off Princes street in Edinburgh), on Sunday 15th April, at 11am (yes in the morning), as part of the entertainment for the first Edinburgh Rock n Roll Marathon. That's open air stage in the infamous scottish spring, brave or what? If you're out and about shopping on a Sunday morning, pop down to see us play, we're on for 1 1/2 hours. That's us on stage B12!

none. I want them all.

Spurred on by this thread, I lugged my Peavey Mark III to practice last night. Sound is still as good as I remember (not to everyone's taste, but still...). Weight seems to increase everytime I shift it. And I hate the bloody top handle, doesn't balance with the mahussive transformer on one side...
