1. Hey Pete,, I believe Im in much the same boat,, I tried to learn theory early on in my playing career and never got round to using it really,, 99%of the time I get asked to learn a track, learn it by ear and remember the pattern on the fretboard,,However I am good enough to deal with the change the key situation and have no issues with busking or jamming along to any track.. If anything still isnt right it gets sorted out in rehearsal Im trying to learn to read again but TBH in the last 20yrs Ive never been given sheet music to read and it wont happen with my current bands or when I get asked to guest in the studio. I also play in a well known tribute and am passionate about doing justice to the songs, But in answer to your original question, suppose its what you need it for,, I personally couldnt sit in an orchestra pit next week,, but that guy probably couldnt bounce around on stage at Butlins...... Strangely a lot of my past playing buddies have gone into teaching music and music tech at colleges etc,but Im still the only one who brings home the bacon by actually playing live. Saying that I am genuinely interested in learning more,,and considering how much time I spend on here these days,,, guess Im running out of excuses....

2009's gigs

61 and a job on shifts,,, now thats organisation... Since April so missed a few months,,,, Also a ticket for a very early retirement!!
3. Aye,,,,, And not just the pubs,,,,, Last night,, huge hall in the North East,, 2 x Dance floors.. Big Xmas bash,,£32 a ticket etc. Everyone up dancing after the meal,,DJ introduces the band..then cos its "his"gig turns all the room lights off,,, everyone sits down,, understandably,,, you cant see !! makes us look a right bunch of charlies,,, few people tried to dance in the dark,,, but not really happening.. ended set after playing real well,,,,told venue owner to get his DJ sorted,, second set,, both dance floors full...... but it killed the atmosphere for us,,,,,mind you xmas bashes,,,,thats another topic..... Rant over,,,,,,night before was awesome,,Darlington Rocks! 99% of peeps after few beers cant even remember what you played,,still affects YOU tho...
4. Hey ,,Hope you have a great gig,, We play the Diamond Club about 2 or 3 times a year and its always a pleasure...a great venue........I believe a young Mr Bonham was in there the other week...great currys inside the venue as well.. especially if there is two bands on the place should be busy,,, enjoy....
5. only time Ive had to pack up and go home is when we cooked an O1V mixing desk,,, Never really trusted anything digital live since!! Used to entertain at one of the big racecourses tho,, and if the conditions were poor they would abandon the races and pay anyway,,which was quite cool..

8.
I usually run the amp at one overall setting and then eq on the bass from there. A lot of it depends on the particular bass. The Status preamps run at a very different frequency to the others, so you can usually get the best sound from maximum treble and bass, with the mid position switch to the flat setting. With the Sadowsky preamp, I usually use 50 percent of both treble and bass. That seems to give the nicest overall sound. The treble control (and pickup positioning) on the Ray is a lot more sensitive, so usually I'm only a gnat's whisker above flat on that one, but again, mids flat and bass boosted to max. Basically, I like a scooped sound with plenty of richness from the bass frequency & plenty of treble for sparkling highs. Usual amp settings are input/gain at 25%, bass at about 60%, treble at 75%, mids all flat in the middle & output volume at 50%. The amp settings may sound odd, but with a powerful preamp on the bass, half of the job is already done. Also, making sure you're using a lot less input gain than output volume seems to give a much sweeter sound overall. Rich, aka. The eq hooligan!
With the hooligan,, on input gain,,, Every time Ive bought an amp, esp Traces,, was always told to run input gain as high as poss,,and see many players do just this,,, I dont care,,,, it sounds pants,,,,,,a much sweeter sound IS obtained from being sensible with Input gain.... Dont think John Chambers amps even have a adjustable input gain,, (thats another story tho).......

20. Hi guys an gals,, In the current climate,, thought I would chuck this one on here and see how it goes,,, Really need a NICE Fender P Bass ,,,anyone intersted in swapping for my Double Bass?? Photos attached,, its a Golden Strad Hungarian bass, imported by Boosey an Hawkes,, plays great (usual scratches etc) and has a great thumping tone,,,the bridge has started to warp through tension, age,, and could do with replacing,,, but its an easy job and not expensive,,, Have strugled to find much info,,, but believe its not laminate,, certainly the top isnt,, but you guys are really the experts and any further information would be much appreciatted.. Really not in a great hurry to part with it,,, enjoy having it around,, but thought would give you guys a chance to comment and see what the interest is... Top Regards Toddy,,,,, (Lincolnshire)

Peavey gear

Previous posts have summed it up,, its built for the road an sounds great If your going to use one of the more powerfull heads eg a 700 firebass, its worth considering getting a 4 ohm cab, cos the matching 4x10 are big an heavy and if you only wish to use one cab will be able to obtain more power,,, If honest it dosent sound quite as creamy! as my old SWR rig cranked up at home,, but once its been passed over through the DI into a desk then out through a PA it makes no audible difference to me,, Mine sits in the back of a van and gets carted all over the UK,, always works and suspect always will,, ( really chuffed theres plenty of peeps to help carry it tho! )
22. Course image is important... You really think audience members really turn up to see what amp the bass player uses?? We recently let our guard down in an unnamed club up north (just for the second set we ditched the look an wore T shirts), We really didnt think anyone would care,,, next day call from well known agent who unbelievably had turned up to this gig to see us play,, an we have now potentially blown a theatre tour,, the only criticism to be had was we looked like a "pub band" in the second set..this really hurts as during some of our shows the singer goes through up to 5 costume changes. Even if you play down the same pub every week,,, a real simple backdrop (nothing worse than a good photo of you with a dartboard in the background),,an an effort in the clothing dept will pay dividends... When playing venues 99% of the ladies wont notice if you play like a god or a looney,, but if your shoes dont match your outfit!!! they will,, an trust me,, if the girls are dancing, the boys will be there watching, buying beer and the landlord will rebook. Best thing is its soo simple,,,, needs less discussion than how to mike the kick drum up !! which usually takes ten minutes eh! Is it just me but I love dressing up anyway??
23. Re budget parts,,,,,,,, he even hand chose the laminations for the transformers he builds himself!,,,,
24. Groovy,,,,,,, John actually let me borrow his CBA500 all valve Bass amp for a couple of months....He really is the tube messiah...... I did and still do really want the production model,,,,,,,but seriously it nearly takes two to lift it!! John Chambers Rawks !
