1. One of "The Collection" I had a couple of years ago - probably the only one in the UK in this colour. Currently defretted with the slots filled with white plastic for a very clean line, but I can refret it if a fretted bass is preferred. £250.
 2. I'm sorely tempted to get this back, but have no money sadly
 3.
recently got hold of an old squier jazz, the prb;em i have is that the open 'A' string when played just doesn't cut through, but it does when the a string is layed on the frets! ive got a mag600 head and when playing open strings the vu meter moves much more on the other open strings than on the 'A'. I'm guessing its just a crappy pup, so what would be good replacements??
if the pickup is working fine as soon as you fret a note on that string, wouldn't it suggest the fault is with the nut or maybe a lack of break angle over it ? (so more wraps on the tuner or at least try and push what you have lower)
 4. I used to get quite a lot of "click" when I played over-enthusiastically, bouncing the strings (particularly the E) off the last fret on the neck. I solved it by making a ramp to force me to play across the strings rather than angled down as well as across.
 5. I had a major trek from sunny Northampton down to rainy Brighton for a gig almost on the sea front, four bands playing lots of variations on the ska/reggae theme with the headliners (local band The Hotknives) playing a storming set to finish off an excellent night.
 6.
I've yet to get some switch cleaner, but will do so. Seeing as this thread is resurrected, I still have a problem with this bass. It's too quiet - or, at least, it doesn't sound like it's firing on all cylinders. Could this be because there's a problem with the pups, or is it still something with the wiring?
try cleaning (or replacing) the jack socket for a start if the problem is constant
 7. UPDATE: I had a guitar in the other day that stank of WD40 - new pots (as even switch cleaner was no good at this point) and it worked fine. WD40 - just say no (or, as it means I might ultimately get some work out of it if you live locally, go for it )
 8.
ok, will do ! how should i check them ? just carefully joggle the wires and see if it makes cracking sounds ?
if it's a dry solder joint (much more likely, imho, with the new lead-free *spit* solder) then it's best to re-flow them with a soldering iron (and some old tin/lead solder if you have some )
 9.
OK, I've used this bass for years and I've always dealt with the problem it has with low output, but I've wondered recently if there is anything I could do about it since it doesn't make anything easier and caused problems in the studio recently. I'm sure that the problems I've had recently with my amp breaking up a bit wouldn't have been such a problem if the output was higher on the bass (which doesn't seem to be as much of an issue with other basses). I've just been looking for a contact email address for Ibanez to see if they could suggest anything, but the only contact details they have on their site are distribution details, which I don't think would be much help. So, can anyone either offer advice on the problem or let me know of an email address I can contact Ibanez on about it? Just for the record, I've raised the pickups, I've looked for a gain screw on the preamp and I'd rather not use any effects in front of it because although it's lowish volume, it sounds great.
my (previously unwritten) standard reply to all such questions, as a pro guitar repairer, is, unless it's a warranty issue, take it to a guitar repairer/ shop / (worst case) mate who has a degree of knowledge of such things if there's a problem, then someone who knows what they're doing should be able to repair it
 10.
Hi, Does anyone have a plan or blueprint etc or know where I can find one for any bass guitar. (warwick or musicman would be a lottery win) I would much prefer to copy a tried and tested bass first before having a go at my own any help appreciated jason
http://www.mimf.com/ http://www.guitarbuildingtemplates.com/electricbass.htm
 11. yes, if you see an F you play an F# because the # on the F line tells you to. the ♮ cancels the # on that line eg. the D followed by a D# in bar 3
 12.
link i didnt know they made bass pickups. cant see them on the site, is it a custom job, old product or phoney?
they have certainly made some, because I have both P bass and a pair of J Bass pickups here somewhere (possibly the first ones made - I asked Tim to make me them for a guitar show a few years ago)
 13. one of the first jobs I ever did : http://www.arrowheadguitars.co.uk/bass%20gallery.html
 14. I had a '78 P that was very nice, wish I'd kept it, tbh.
 15. this might be just the thing : http://www.fender.com/products/search.php?partno=0968200021 played one briefly this afternoon and it felt very nice - didn't have time to plug it in to see what it sounded like, but if I needed an acoustic bass I'd probably grab one (as it is I might still do something silly )
 16.
Right, let me see if i've got this sussed. CTS only produce log pots, and these will be suitable for both tone and volume. Is that right?
no, CTS make log and lin pots - but log pots can be used for both applications while lin pots are better left just to tone pots

 18.
Thanks, there's a good little guide that expains it all on that page.
except the explanation is ut**r bo****ks . . . er, inaccurate. a log pot is used for volume as the human ear doesn't hear a linear increase in volume in a smooth fashion - if you fit a linear pot as a vol pot you get a huge jump in volume towards the end of the travel of the pot instead of a gradual increase, so it works more like an on/off switch.
 19.
Are CTS pots suitable for both volume and tone controls? The old pots i've removed from my Encore P are marked A500K for tone, and B500K for volume, but the CTS pots don't seem to have any ratings.
A is a logarithmic potentiometer (used particularly for volume) and B is linear (often used for tone pots) what other marks are there on the CTS pots ? (assuming there are any)
 20.
Ohhh wow, they sound fantastic! Best version of These Boots I've ever heard, damn Toyah sounds about a million times better than ever before. Cool! Only thing that springs to mind is a lot of the tracks on My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts have multiple bass parts
the bass on These Boots reminds me of one of the tracks on Sheep Farming In Barnet http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Jopci9kzoU
 21. another thing you can do is play it an octave or two higher than the recording, which, for me at least, makes it easier to tell if I'm playing the right note
 22.
My son has outgrown the Peavey Foundation and is now covetting the Sonic Hammer Time to distract him with something from the Stingray family...
ah, so you're the current owner of the forum Sonic Hammer
 23.
To be fair to the bloke the crash was probably going to split pretty soon anyway, and he wasn't necessarily abusing it, so you could hardly expect him to replace it with a new one. Unfortunately, by their nature (i.e. they're made of metal and you hit them) cymbals have a limited life.

That's a fair point, but its also unlikely that a new (Non faulty) cymbal would break however hard you hit it with a drum stick (assuming he did use a drum stick and not a mike stand or something!).
. . . do you know, I'm now convinced you must be the most knowledgeable man on the planet as regards cymbals - I shall make sure to put all my cymbal-related questions your way in the future, and refer anyone who might ask me anything about cymbals to you, so you can share your wisdom with them too. Thank you for your insights on the subject. *bows deeply*
