He's obviously just choosing to take a different direction with his music, I've got to say though some of the best bass ever gone down on a record was Bakithi Kumalo's stuff on Graceland.
i agree, some wonderful bass playing..

Over the years ive listened to BNH alot... still think they were the best popular thing to happen to soul/groove/funk.. Always loved Andrew's playing.. but didnt noticed it that much..in a way thats why i really love it because he is so perfect in that band..funky, understated.. still pulls out some wonderful grooves and fills, but is SUPER SOLID.. he always sounds good and adds so much to that band.... BNH were never Acid Jazz what ever that was? ..there were too soulful... Jan Kincaid and his crew have got serious soul.. a great understated bass player... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4zkpCozBAdE you may not have heard this one.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0pVOvwL2Yg another rare un...
It's also whether or not you think it will benefit you. Whenever I see Doddy doing this technique, I think I'll learn it, but then I think: 'Can I be arsed?'
if you like it, why not make it worth your while.... my dad used to say 'whats worth doing is worth doing well'..

i was just thinking.. what does the upstroke of the thumb do, that your pointing of index finger cant do? is it in the structure of the rythm?
-
i cant double thumb, would love to be able to, maybe soon...much more efficient.. but from experience (as all others)different techniques really dont take that long with patience, (some longer than others) and taking it slow.. methodically.. another feather in your cap and all that Pete..
-
Why not, you dont alway have to look like everyone else.. its unique.. what colour is the bass? when your famous it will be worth a fortune..
-
I remember seeing a vid of him saying he would never leave his beloved KS..

The Sunburst Band..Julian Crampton on bass... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lR4oSPgrfmc
I honestly think he's the world's number one player, not just with bass, but as an inspiring musician. The guy is unique and extraordinary.
hes no doubt incredible and i love watching him play....but beauty is after all, in the eye of the beholder..

What Doddy said.. although if certain factors are 100% i will let others slide a little.. every basses tone has its own peronality, so maybe one has to bend our ideal tone somewhat.
-
why would it matter if everyones talking about him, if its for all the wrong reasons?
I think in the TB thread it was because the guy had a low level of fundamental ability coupled with an enormous ego. He genuinely thinks he's a very advanced player and in the posts he makes it's obvious he thinks he's a cut above the average gigging bass player. He mistakes this over-inflated sense of ability as confidence when in reality it's ignorance. He's a learner level bass player who thinks he's pro-level and he isn't shy of telling people that, it's easy to see why that becomes annoying and people turn against him.
I actually think he is quite advanced, until he tries to pull those advanced techniques off... seems like his mind is ahead of his actual talent
Why start a thread and say nothing? Just curious.. One thing with the dude - he is getting a bit of exposure over at TB. Garry
Ok.. i thing his playing is pretty awful.. bad timing.. he doesnt deserve to be called what he was.. If he didnt big himself up so much it wouldnt be so bad...but the fact he thinks hes so amazing seems a little sad.. But if he enjoys himself, good on him

Ok ive had a Fender Jazz 24 fret 4 string lent to me for 6 months. i had one of these and it was my second only bass. ive had it for two weeks now.. there are lots of people who now this bass and have played one, but for those who dont, i thought i would do a review. Features.. Tobacco burst body, it is undersized from a normal jazz body, the lower horn is cut further into the body to let your hands get better access to the 24 frets.. Quilted maple top thats nice.. Rosewood fingerboard, with a a maple neck..truss rod adjustment is from the top of neck, which i hate. i much prefer the MM truss wheel or my Modulus top neck allen key.... high gloss body with silver Fender logo and gloss headstock..HipShot Light tuners.. Heavy duty bridge...chrome hardware all round.. Bass Line pups, Active Fender preamp with passive switching, with a erm..slap switch? seems to add a little highs and mid... volume(with pull/push active passive switching), mid, pickup blend ,stack knob for bass and treble.. Action fit and finish... Cant complain, Light, about 8.3, well balanced, looks fabulous..there is not a mark on it.. frets are well dressed..There is a slight gap on the bottom of the neck pocket.. but i dont really care about this.. im big believer that a good bolted neck takes care of wood to wood response.. as i said i love the headstock that is laquer coating the silver Fender logo.. i believe the Zone bass was the first to have this.. Korean basses are well known to be of a high standard.. there are exceptions of course but not with this one... action is good but no Modulus or Sadowsky.. but of a bass less than half the value its up there.. a well made bass in all areas.. Sound... Active....My word...Very good..Typical Jazz growl (strings buzzing when you pul off the frets) thats growl to me.. The Seymour Duncan single coils are noisless, and are great.. better run with the active curcuit.....The preamp amp is typical (imo) non sophisticated Fender.. its good though, through a good amp... Fingerstyle tone is sooo good EQ'ed right (IMO).. im playing this through an Aguilar Head and Cab.. but im thinking this bass would cut through with most potent setups.... Across the flat EQ range, this jazz is balanced.. the low,s mids and highs are there naturally.. and everything in between are within thy grasp.. i love a low mid gospel tone now and again and this bass does it.. Passive... Like i said the pups are ok, much more raw in passive.. bar non this is this the best Jaco honk of all the jazz basses ive played.. on there own there a little harsh but in the mix they are killer... Playability... I cant get on with the length of the neck..although its a 34 scale, it seems a stretch to me.. and i dont like the lower horn being cut in on the deluxe USA jazzers, this seems to be the same shape but without the pickguard.. still seems like a squat jazz shape to me.... but im used to a normal full sized Fender or my Modulus.. Ignoring that its such a comfortable bass...like i said it has a smaller jazz body, and it feels like it.. the nut width is bigger than a 75 reissue.. comfortable but not a skinny jazz neck.. gloss also.. ignoring that,.. i feel at home... overall rating.. For the money. especially second hand, these are superb basses.. i wouldnt buy one because of the ergonomics.. im to used to a 20/21 fret bass... i think this is one of the best basses Fender.. erm..used to sell. full price (you can get em new) there are better but get a used one you will love it..
A little tale about Mr Vigier, if you'll indulge me. About 20 years ago I knew a guy who had a lovely Vigier bass, one night he tripped over his lead, yanked the bass of it's stand & took about a 4 inch area of paint clean off it. He was pretty heartbroken. Anyway, a year or so later he sent the bass back to Mr Vigier for a re-fret. When the bass came back it had been completely refinished & had a note in the case to the effect "thought you would appreciate having it back to new, no charge, regards PV".
Wow.. what a nice man... -
