1.
Good call. This is worth an hour of anyone's time. No widdling, just great bass playing and with an antigua P bass... https://www.youtube....h?v=wU0d4FtYRjs
I watched all the way through. Excellent.!!! I have this live Maze in New Orleans on CD. Its brilliant, nice to see the live video. Nice one Julesb.
2.
That's just plain stupid. Why ? Good for you wearing earplugs though. Loud music, and playing loud is one of my pet hates.
Mine too. I used to know this guy who insisted on listening to everything loud. I would go round his house and music was blasting out. Why.? For one i don't want Tinnitus and two, I'm not a teenager. It also reminds me of the dreaded boy racer.
3. The one that got away was a Sei 5 string Jazz bass, it had an olive wood top, Bartolini pups and a J East preamp. It had 19mm spacing but a neck to die for. it also had a very thin body and scalloped neck heel that felt so good to hold. I bought it from Molan (Barrie) It was a dream bass. Sounded great and to play it was just amazing. Never played a bass quite like it. I sold it on BC for £900 when i was on hard times. Stupid idiot. i wanted to get it back, and contacted the guy i sold it to. but he wanted stupid money, which i thought was a bit crap of him. couldn't afford it at the time. Would sell all my gear to get it back now.
4. This record.! there instrumental stuff, is fantastic, but there injection of soul into there funk is very very great. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Q-EESSW6B0
5. Hopefully, Pete the legend, that is Pete Academy who started this thread, is back soon. I have learned so much music from himself, and great funk loving BCer's. I hope he is well and will post some killer tracks soon. Just to get you back on a funky track Peter, check this sh*t out. you will probably get my FB message before you get this Epic George Duke track brother. 6. What a groove this has.
7.
https://www.youtube....ayer_detailpage Anutha one for ya
Thats a cracking record Mike.!
8. Ahh i see,.!! don't watch that much EWF live stuff for it to click. thanks for the info JTK/Guys.
9. This is really great. Initially i would say no to the Buck Rodgers outfits, but i may be swayed if Phil Bailey said i looked ok. imagine playing bass in this f***in band.
10.
Hey Andrew You were on here bright and early on a Sunday morning - that baby keeping you awake??
Yeah something like that. Its more those piggin dogs, the cat and the hamster.!
11.
Sorry to burst your bubble but I think it unlikely you'll find live footage where he plays the bass.. these last 20-25 years.. The bass on the track live is great,..just don't know who is playing it. But, sure, got to love those songs.
Im a little confused JT.?
12. Its definitely sped up a little, but that can happen with YouTube vids. On purpose or not she's still very accomplished. I was more liking her solo. Not to everyones taste the first vid I'm sure. The tone is not my favourite either, but it really doesn't bother me.
13. He's one of my favourite bass players of all time, he's not very well known i guess. very groovy funk bass player for one of my favourite bands, Fantastic groove the man had. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=waSM0rXDLys Played bass for many years with Maze and Frankie Beverly, as well as on the great Joy and Pain record.. He was just a fantastic edition from the start to this band. His slap and finger style. He mixes the two styles flawlessly in his playing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mBolaUzH9M
14.
30 odd years ago, a workmate lent me The Captain and Me, and Stampede, both of which I have loved and play regularly. I recently bought from Amazon, from a series entitled "Original Album Series" a box set (loads of choices, all 5 albums for around a tenner a set, worth checking out) containing the 2 albums I already had plus Tolouse Street, Vices/Habits, and Taking it to the streets. I'm loving them so much I'm hungry for more. Are there any more albums than the 5 I have? I love the country rock feel particularly of the Doobies, but can anyone recommend me someone else to check out. We all know and love the Eagles of course, but there may well be some lesser known gens that I can lose myself in. A little less keen on the later, Michael McDonald more soulful albums (sorry Mike!) Thanks in advance
I can see how your liking to a lesser extent Micheal's soul influence on the band. Which he definitely had. He was backing singer for Steely Dan who had really changed going into the late 70's to a more Soul Jazz style. Whether that was within him,? I'm sure it was. This for me is great. Bit of a soul funky country vibe. Later picked up by funk legend Candi Staton. And then the UK Soul Jazz Funk band Incognito.
15.
Yep, going to get a couple of tickets for the Heavies for sure - only downside is that it is at the town hall which is an awful venue sound wise. Didn't know that Tony was playing too - saw him last with the Sunburst Band at the Jazz Cafe a couple of years ago - great voice. Julian Crampton is playing bass with him at the moment so could be a good gig.
Wow i didn't know Julian was playing with his band bud. So going to be there.
16. Im not really into very intricate noodling, but when it sounds this good I'm all ears., i will lay my hat down to this kid, she is a bad ass on the bass.. The solo @ 2.00 minutes is just astonishing. . Incredible technique the girl has. She's 16 years old. Im quite amazed that a person can be this good at 16 years of age. Just goes to show, musical ability is inherent.
17. Imo there are better clones out there. Lakland for one, are way more consistent. If i was after a P or a J, it wouldn't be a Fender. For me finding a good one just isn't worth the hassle. Sometimes your paying for the name.
18. I like playing bass because I'm not a narcissist, and we are the guy's who keeps the music together.
19. Its unlimited how much joy and influence i get from this band and Verdine…. 20 + years, and my ears are still finding something good. What a groove, this record has,. If there is anyone who plays for the music it is Verdine. No flash, (maybe a little) no slap, Just the music.
20. My Elwood 5 has a neck, very much like a Lakland 55-02. Its nothing like a Fender 5 string Jazz neck.
21. I dig the East preamps. But i have heard great things about Rogers retro fit jazz bass preamp. http://sadowsky.com/product/sadowsky-onboard-bass-preamp/
22. I never liked the USA standard Jazz basses. They felt cheap to me, only my opinion of course. Sounded great though. I had one in Oly white. Sounded great. but It was the routing under the pick guard that didn't help. and when i took the neck out of the neck pocket, (I'm very careful) the paint literally broke off down to the wood. That just wouldn't happen if you took off the neck of say an SR5. The Japanese did Fender so much better imo. Solid as an OX.
23. Maybe Jim is talking about the older Fender Deluxe 5 string Jazz Basses, with the extra bottom horn cutaway.? Pics will tell all. i could be wrong, but £650 is too good a price for a newer Deluxe with the blocks etc. maybe not the colour, but is it like this one.? If its the case, which i think it is, thats a good price. Put some lighter gauge strings on it, and set it up properly.
24. At last The Brand New Heavies are playing at the Cheltenham Jazz Festival. May 1st bank holiday weekend. Its gonna be a funky one. Also Tony Momrelle from Incognito is playing in the day with his band. http://www.cheltenha...nd-new-heavies/ http://tonymomrelle.com/live.html
25. Nikki West is a bad ass cat.!
