  1. You could look at something like the Hotone ThunderBass or something similar, but they'll still need a cab (not sure if you can just use it with headphones). The last guitar amp I had used some clever switching to use different configurations of valves to get different power levels. Even on it's lowest setting, it was still a bit too loud for quiet practice. Always had my trusty old PODxt there for later evening use.
  2. Attenuators are all well and good if you want to get a decent sound out of a valve amp, but at lower volumes, however, you still have to have enough signal coming through to the speaker in order to make the speaker work efficiently, and not "fart out" (not enough signal getting through to get a decent sound). Even with an attenuator, 9 times out of 10, a valve amp will unfortunately still be too loud to use at home and retain a decent sound (unless of course, you are after a totally clean sound, or just using it for very quiet practice). I've been through a few with various guitar amps, the best one I had was a THD HotPlate paired to a 50w JCM800 2x12 combo. It was great for rehearsing, but just that bit too loud for use at home. A small solid state amp is possibly the best way to go, or a headphone amp/amp modeller.
  3. TBH, it sounds more like you need to have a band meeting to figure out where the band is going in the future, and whether it's worthwhile trying to rebuild the enthusiasm for it, rather than spending more money on something that sounds like you'll never see anything back from. If it's worth saving, then maybe get the tracks released & get gigging again. If not, shake hands & walk away.
  4. Looks promising, would like to see the specs and amp/cab/effects models list and whether it's an HX or Legacy model. Are they finally getting around to making an HD500x replacement??? About time.
  5. Saw that on FB as well. Gorgeous looking bass. Quite tempting, but finances say no. GLWTS.
  6. Geddy at least admits that he's a Squire disciple. And Ox, and Jack Casady...
  7. I noticed when I was looking through the For Sale section earlier, that most of the instruments on the first two pages were mainly 5 or 6 strings. There seemed to be more 6's than 5's, very few 4 string basses though.
  8. My old Thunder 1A weighed a ton, but by god, it sounded ace.
  9. Beautiful bass, congrats. Always really wanted one back in the day, like you say, good old Henry on Rock School. Enjoy, just make sure you have a padded strap to hand when you play it!
  10. It was a really good documentary.
  11. In the past, I had a few pedals which needed a 3.5mm jack to power them from a PSU (ProCo Rat, EHX Small Stone/Small Clone). I simply modified a few of the leads with a 3.5mm jack I bought from the local music shop, figured out the positive & negatives, then soldered the leads to the jacks. Lasted for years with no problems. Sold the pedals and included the leads.
  12. Absolutely gutted to hear this. RIP Neil, thanks for the music.
  13. Another competitor in the modelling market might liven things up a bit, especially if they can add something interesting. I suppose it's a bit early for a hardware upgrade, especially after releasing the HX Stomp last year. I suppose I better keep on saving up then!
  14. Does this mean that there's an imminant upgrade due for the Helix hardware? If so, that'll mean that there will be a slew of current versions of Helix flooding onto the second hand market... 😉👍
  15. Bought some for one of my acoustic guitars years ago, never fitted them, as the Thomastik's that are on it still sound as bright as the day they were put on years ago.
  16. What an ace story, and a superb bass, congrats.
  17. It's tempting, but I'm too far away. I assume there's no case with it?
  18. So @jim_bass, what was the outcome of your experimentation?
