Stereo generally refers to basses that allow you to take a feed from each pickup, Rickenbackers and the high-end Alembics for example. It's a bit of a misnomer as the separate feeds usually combine to make the complete sound as opposed to being sent out from different sides of the stage (for example). I don't think it's a gimmick at all - nothing sounds like a Series II Alembic - or indeed the classic Rick sound. Of course there are some more eccentric interpretations - the Roy Wood bass in a previous post being a good example!

I like the general design of the thing but the finish is questionable, to say the least. Corts are excellent basses, I'm not surprised Jeff likes them. I'm still amazed by this but at the last London Bass Guitar Show, the Cort basses I tried were the nicest I played all weekend. I like Jeff, too, even though I disagree with most of the things he says!

Damn good tone for sure. Still sounds like Geddy even on a P. My money's on Exit, Stage Left though. Or Signals (the Rick stuff).

I love Alembic basses - they're really 'as good as it gets' in my opinion - but I've never played the signature models I'm afriad. I have no reason to believe they would be anything less than stunning. I wish they could be run in stereo though!

I almost bought an ipad just for this app... In fact, on a mate's band's latest album, all the Mellotron sounds were generated from this app.

I remember seeing the bass player with a Fender Jazz on telly back in the day. With block inlays on the neck IIRC! Don't know what was on the recording though. I was at school at the time and very much part of the metal brigade so listening to such bands was not allowed.

[/quote] Well... To my ears, this is the classic Thunderbird front pickup tone through and through. MT has a very similar tone these days (although not quite as gritty) when he plays his Thunderbird. However, in his autobiography, MT insists he used his Rickenbacker 4001 to record Argus, even pointing out how people assume it's the thunderbird because it was pictured in the album sleeve. MT'sWA recently re-recorded Argus and he played the Rick again - I haven't heard it myself but I can't believe the original Argus is a Rick. There are plenty of Youtube clips of MT playing his Rick and it doesn't sound like Argus at all. Now, Pilgrimage - [i]that[/i] sounds like a Rick! The debut album was recorded before MT owned a proper bass so he played a rented Fender Jazz with flats. He didn't think much of the sound...

I've been playing my beloved little Hofner Violin bass non-stop lately after putting some new flatwound strings on it, and at the weekend I made the major life-changing decision to remove the scratchplate, just like that famous bloke who plays one. It looks much better now (IMHO) but there's the small issue of the little holes left behind in the body. They are very small and I'm not bothered by the appearance but is it ok to just leave it as it is, or should they be 'plugged' in some way? Should I put the screws back in?

At the weekend I finally got round to putting flats on my Hofner Violin Bass. It's amazing, like a whole new instrument! I admit the rounds that came on it from the factory were a bit crap, but it now goes 'bomp' instead of 'twang' and is just perfect.

John Entwistle Slab P bass. Fender, of course Or, the legendary Frankenstein that grew out of it - sounds lthe same but looks a bit more ordinary.
